S. 2 FGREWORD In days of old, pirates roamed the seven seas, gay, colorful men, dashing, daring, gallant men, men who fought for the spoils of battle, men who fought for the sheer sport of fighting, men who lived and died with equal recklessness. These hardy men had weaponse-the accepted weapons of their day. A cutlass, a pistol, a poniard provided them with protection sufficient for any occasion that might arise, and a ship of sturdy oaken beams, flying the dread skull and cross-bones, carried them whither they might go. They fought fearlessly and skillfully against overwhelming odds, but because they violated the rules of honest endeavor, were doomed to ex- tinction. This, too, is a bold age, an age of glorious adventure and of bitter struggle. Our new heroes of noble purpose are ventur- ing forth to make that greatest conquesteefreedom for all the peoples of the world from this time forth. ik' if CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION ACTIVITIES CLASSES ATHLETICS 3 Bfzm and crimfon and wlzfff it 5171-7165, Owl' tlzf .vtfwl-zipjvzcf orrfcrfd linex. Peterson, SpCWJ 3fc, whose personal charm and untiring efforts as our advisor during the two years preceding his entry into the Navy, have made him an enduring friend of the Class of 1944. The Seniors have been deeply moved by the absence of many of their classmates now in the Armed Forces. These boys have contributed much to the life of East High School Now they are prepared to give their all for a greater cause. We bade farewell not sorrow fully, only regretfully. Others, who have not yet laid down their books and pencils, will follow soon We are justly proud of every one. Izzo 6 Wvords cannot express just how much We, the Senior Class of 1944, appreciate the inspirational leadership of Miss Izzo as one of our class advisors. We owe much of our success to the great enthusiasm and sound advice which she has shown in our undertakings. Always our good friend and confidante, Miss lzzols effective solutions of all our problems have made her a hrm friend as well as an able teacher. Because of her very pleasing personality and energetic nature, she has become immensely popular with the seniors and has won the respect and admiration of all who know her. VVe shall never forget the wonderful times at East High School and shall for- ever cherish the fondest memories of Miss Izzo. ADVI OR We, the Class 0f19-14, thank Mr. Welch for his co-operation and boundless en- thusiasm Which has spurred us on through the final lap of the East High School re- lay. His calm eHiciency has guided us on our road of problems, and his personal interest in us has harmonized the various dif'liculties that have arisen during the year. His rough good humor was never lacking, and at times he could not afford to be without it. We cannot adequately express our appreciation for the guidance and co-operation of Mr. Welch, but we Want him to know that we shall never lose the self-assurance he has given us as one of our class advisors. VVo1.oA ST TH E PR INCI PAL'S MESSAGE During this year the thoughts and efforts of all of us at East High School have been centered first and foremost on the gigantic struggle in which our nation is at present engaged. Our thoughts are constantly of those from our ranks participating in it. VVe are greatly pleased with their visits to the school when on furlough and have enjoyed especially their attendance at our assemblies. ln the service ranks are many from your own class. Some left for service even before the Senior year began in September: others entered after the new term opened in january. This is truly a war year. Our congratulations to the Class of 19+-I for standing by the Ship, To produce such a line Urfrut as this one in a world of shortages is just one instance of your devotion to accomplishing some of those things that we want to preserve even in a world at war. VVe trust and believe that the effort you have given to your studies, your activities, and your social relationships will be of great value to you when you leave East High School. Our very best wishes to each of you! 9 THE FACULTY jZ'tkA'!II11'lll, lfmmz, .1l'L,'lXw1Ij', 1,1111 llfmz, Iliff, llvllffflll. THE SENIOR CLASS IN RICTROSPECT As we turn the last page of our history at East High, let us rexninisce upon the carefree days spent within her walls. Do you remember us as shy, withering freshmen with wide eyes and open mouths? The first year brought a rush of intriguing events and activities hampered only by never- ending homework. Eagerly we devoured Ivanhoe, night football, a-I-b:c, track meets, and matter can neither be created nor destroyed. Due to an emergency, part of the class went to the Annex as usual while the remainder was interned at the main building. Sophomore year united us: and, under the leadership of Miss Anne lzzo and Mr. Paul Peterson, we elected class olhcers. June Howorth, President, Richard Judge, Vice-President, lVIarcia McKee, Treasurer, Lillian Silinis, Secretary, and Arthur Agnello, Social Chairman, were chosen. During our second year two dances were held, both successful. Junior yearfat last we were upper classmenl Our faces now wore the rapt expressions of the learned, as we tried to appear wordly. Mr. Edward Welch stepped readily into place as our new advisor when lVIr. Peterson left to serve in the U. S. Navy. The elected oflicers for the third year were Richard Judge, President, Charles DeCarlo,Vice-President, Carl Montione, Treasurer, Dolores Figueras, Secretary, and Chris Williams, Social Chairman. The highlight of the year was the class party held in the 4'l3allroom.l' Our final year found us anticipating the responsibilities for which We had prepared our- selves. VVith Harvard VVilliamson as President: Joe O'Keefe, Vice-President: Marion Ayer, Treasurer, Nancy Lee, Secretary, and Phyllis lVIcTaggart, Social Chairman, we undertook the duties of a senior class. The first event of the year, a Christmas Corridor Dance, was held to honor the boys leaving for the service in January. The Senior play, Thr Late Chrirtopher Bran, was presented in january. VVith our stage- struck but talented classmates as the cast, the play proved to be a hit. Now, as the days slip by, we realize that we shall soon be graduates. VVe stand on the threshold of a new, strange life. Our paths may not cross again, but the instruction and guidance received here will serve as an impetus toward our success. 14 IOR COUNCIL ffffr, lfrrg, R. ,llfflfn llfhzamzzrlrz. The club gives a scholarship every year to a worthy boy or girl of Italian extraction. The Piccolo Scrivano, published by the Italian classes, is another activity of this club. The paper is sold to other high schools and is read by the parents of the pupils, thus promoting a feeling of good will and co-operation. The purpose of this club is to enrich the understanding ofthe modern languages taught at East High. This is accomplished in part by holding programs of lectures and movies, and in part by the staging of plays written in foreign languages with the students themselves as characters. lt is well said to be one of the most colorful and cultivating of our clubs. Although the team hnished eighth in league standings, a win in a few of the very close games would have greatly altered that position. Delt a severe hlow by the loss of veteran Sam Pecorella, the team played brilliantly in several games and rose to the heights against Monroe High to snap their winning streak, 40-35. After participating in a season which saw many records shattered, East High,s swimming team finished a fairly successful year wih a record of four wins, four losses. Especially significant was the team's spirit which, despite our non-existent swimming pool, remained high throughout the season. As in other years, Nlr. Henry DiClemente ably coached the boys. With Mr. Henry DiClemente coaching, the track team anticipates a good season. Three hold- overs from last year give promise ofa winning team. Jack Schifano and Bob Crandall show remark- able ability in the half-mile, while Carl Montione and lrv Peers are prospects for the high jump and pole vault respectively. An eager flock of freshmen and sophomores forms a backbone for the purple and White. TRACK OCCER .lla Callfnf, Youizgmau, fllulo, ll.
