ORTY years ago this J une, a small group of young men with dreams of handlebar mustaches and young Women dressed as Gibson Girls, ventured forth from the portals of the Rochester High School. They, the members of the first graduation class of East High School, went forth to serve a gay, carefree world of tandem bicycles, horse cars, gas lights, and an occasional terrifying 'Chorseless carriagef' Many of the customs and traditions We observe today were established at that time. Although the appearance of our school and of its sons and daughters may have altered, that spirit which marked those early days still prevails in our halls. Our class, the fortieth class, will go forth into a world at War, and to us and our generation will fall the task of reconstruction after the con- flict. Yve wish to give recognition to that first graduating class by using the customs of their day as the theme of our yearbook. VVe hope that in years to come we may profit from the examples of our predecessors and, perhaps, even surpass them.
