'X ORTY years ago this J une, a small group of young men with dreams of handlebar mustaches and young Women dressed as Gibson Girls, ventured forth from the portals of the Rochester High School. They, the members of the first graduation class of East High School, went forth to serve a gay, carefree world of tandem bicycles, horse cars, gas lights, and an occasional terrifying 'Chorseless carriagef' Many of the customs and traditions We observe today were established at that time. Although the appearance of our school and of its sons and daughters may have altered, that spirit which marked those early days still prevails in our halls. Our class, the fortieth class, will go forth into a world at War, and to us and our generation will fall the task of reconstruction after the con- flict. Yve wish to give recognition to that first graduating class by using the customs of their day as the theme of our yearbook. VVe hope that in years to come we may profit from the examples of our predecessors and, perhaps, even surpass them. If forty years hence another class is helped by our experiences and derives enjoyment from these pages, We shall feel that our goal has been attained. nr Emi? Although relatively few of us have come in contact with her as a teacher, we have found her, when occasion demand- ed, a sympathetic listener and advisor. Miss Haugh has worked with us and for us in every project we have undertakeng and part of the enthusiasm with which we have done things has been due to the vivaeity with which she has supported us. Some of the fondest mem- ories that we shall have of our years in East High School will be those sur- rounding our association with lNIiss Haugh. THE CLASS of 1943 is par- ticularly fortunate in hav- ing Nlr. Paul J. Smith as one of its advisors. Admired and respected by all his pupils and associates, Mr. Smithis interest in our class has not waned during the press of his wartime activi- ties as head of the Mathe- matics Department. His policy has been to allow the class officers to assume much responsibility for themselves, lout his sound advice has always been forthcoming when problems arose. Mr. Smith's years of sympathetic and able ad- visorship will long be re- membered by all students of East High School, but they will be recalled es- pecially by the members of our class. To the Class of June, 1943, I speak my admiration and say well done. To a senior class in the midst of a great war emergency has been offered not only exhilaratiou and challenge but also difficulties and confusion. Probably no class that has ever left East High has been faced with so much uncertainty concerning future plans. A steady grip, a clear look ahead, and a firm determination to tread your Way through the years immediately ahead are the guides I offer you on your chart upon leaving East High. The happenings of the day that seem to interfere with well-laid plans of years ago, I recom- mend that you accept as an adventure and an experience that will enrich rather than frustrate your previous plans. Play your part after you leave East High as well as you have while here and your Alma Mater will be proud of you. My best Wishes to each and every one of you. May our friendship continue through the coming years. 9 Q , John L. Merrell Earl A. Partridge Ann Bassett Fletcher H. John A. Baird Robert G. VVith poorly concealed excitement we stumbled through the corridors in search of homerooms. Our fears of new teachers were soon allayed when we found Mr. Harris and his staff of instructors kind and helpful. Many resolutions were made that week to study hard and to show those teachers what we could do. And remember those two or three assemblies at the main building? How thrilled we were to become a part of East High School proper for one hour. It wasn't long before the newness began to wear off. The glimpses we had had of life at the main building made us eager to be promoted to higher rank. Our sophomore year was soon upon us, and again we went through the process of losing ourselves in strange halls. The assemblies on Friday caused that day to become the most important of the week. VVe organized our class, chose advisors, and then began to plan for our senior year. In 1941 we took the next step toward our goalg We were juniors. Vile began to participate more in student government activities and to become affiliated with various clubs. VVe knew quite a few seniors and most of the faculty. How superior we felt toward the sophomores 14 and freshmen! We had completely forgotten how green we had feltAa few years before. We knew a lot, too. At least we thought we did. Then suddenly we were seniors who found ourselves caught up in a mad whirl of activity. Besides accepting many responsibilities inside school and out, we began to enjoy life and to have more good times, much to the detriment of our school work. Wiar work, also, made demands on our time, and the things we did had to be measured by their usefulness to us in relation to the war effort. Now June, 1943, is in the offing. Humbly we realize that one door of our lives is closing and another is opening. A new life awaits us. VVith high hope and good faith we go forth with knowledge to use, a vision to guide us, and a memory of a brief but happy sojourn at East High School. Dramatics I The Club Uooper, QUT. Dolan, Zirfgffr. lJt3lV'l'Z'f6, M arks. The Dramatics Club, under the supervision of Mr. Edwin Dolan, studies the ins and outs of the dramatic art. This year, the club members have specialized in the study of make-up. They have been called upon to put their knowledge to practical use by making up the casts of school plays and skits. ir Three years ago a group of East High pupils felt that there should be greater student interest and participation in school activities. At the same time, there was a demand to lessen the number of requests for money and yet to furnish the necessary athletic equipment. From these desires the Co-Op plan was formulated and put under the Wing of a special committee. The work of this com- mittee has made the Co-Op plan a definite part of life at East High School. The 1949 football season is the best, to date, in East Highls history. The team upset all sorts of previous interscholastic records and finally clinched the city championship as an undefeated team. They scored a total of one hundred thirty points, which is eighteen more than had ever been scored by any team in a season. The score in the Edison Tech game, 39-0, is the highest on record for one game. . Much of the success of the team is due to Coach Pete McKay,s HTH formation and, also, to the excellent teamwork and good condition of the players. The final tribute to the teamls achievement was the selection COACH MCKAY of four of the players for the All-Scholastic team. Those chosen , were the following: Joe Flood, captain of the school teamg Lou Ranalet, co-captain, Dick VValzg and Clinton Clapp. F FGOTBALL 60 BASKETBALL East High,s basketball team, under the guiding hand of Coach Daly, enjoyed one of the best seasons it has had in years. The team, after losing a couple of tough onesn to lllonroe and Frank- lin, finished in third place With a season record of 11 wins against 5 losses. This year,s five scored 69 points against lVIarshall, thereby setting the year's record in points scored in a single game. Norm Morreale was second high scorer in the city and was chosen as forward on the All-Scholastic team. Bill Traikoff tied for third high scorer and was placed on the second team. East East East Bye East East East East East Monroe Jefferson Edison Charlotte Franklin West Marshall Madison CRGSS COUNTRY 'With a large, veteran squad to begin with, East Highs Cross Country team expected a good year from the start of the season. These hopes were not disappointed as the team tied for first place in city league competition and swept the Geneva Sectionals. Coach Henry DiClemente began the work of preparing the team at the beginning of the fall term, and received good co-operation from the squad. Co-Captains Elwood Wlhite and Jacque Lindsay earned their positions Well, finishing fifth and seventh respectively in the sectionals. VVhite was never defeated in city competition and took the local championship easily. Competition was keen among the members of the team itself, and seven Orient runners finished within the first twenty-one at Geneva to bring home the silver trophy to East again. The reserve team captained by VVilbert COACH DICLEMENTE VVestfall and Calvin Mayne, finished second in its league, while Jack Crandall placed second in the city reserve meet. Seniors Lindsay, Lenfest, Hellenschmidt, Swayze, Davidson, and G. Blorreale, the top men on last fall's squad, graduate this year. However, a nucleus of veterans is expected for next year's action. The meet scores illustrate the ease of Eastls wins and the narrowness of its defeats: East 34, West 40, Franklin 53 East 18, Marshall 45 Edison 26, East 30, Madison 80 East 448, Edison 70, VVaterloo '73, West 86, Geneva 101 CGeneva Sectionalsj East 16, Monroe 419, Jefferson 60 Swayze, Ilellenschmidi, Davidson, Thompson, Ch'iII!?lJlli, Cranzlall, Schoenthallcr, IVlfStfilU, Mayne, Ferrara, Drclwr, Lmzfvsl, White, Limlsay, Morrcalc, Coach DiC'lcmz:ntc. 63 'Track At the outset of the season, Coach Henry DiCle1nente's cin- dermen appear to have a strong chance of finishing very high in league competition. A large, well- balanced squad is on hand: and practices have been held daily, with special emphasis being placed on the early development of capable starters in the field events. Elwood W7hite, VValt lllurrer, Bob Lenfest. Ed Swayze, Paul Seely, VVilbert Wlestfall, Jacque Lindsay, Ed Kern, and others are expected to star this year. ir The Soccer team had a not too successful season in 19412.
