HISTUHY One sunny September morning in the year 1938, a group of three hundred fifty freshmen strolled into the East High annex, trying vainly to eover up their anxiety at the prospect of facing high school life. But lVlr. Harris and his legion of teachers at the annex soon proved their fears t.o be groundless. Soon the frosh had entered into the swing of high school life and settled down to a routine of faithful study. And how they studied!! They were determined to show those teachers something. After a year spent at the Annex, we all felt superior. Why we knew loads-not everything, but almost everything. Then we started in at the Main Building. Was our ego deflated rapidly! The first day we felt very small and insignificant. The seniors towered above ns, and never so much as appeared to notice us. But at the Main Building new opportunities were open to us. Here we started to learn more about lhe intricacies of the S. fi. A. Here many clubs, to satisfy our varied tastes, were open to us. From young freshmen secure in our own ignorance, we became sophomores, realiving that perhaps, after all. we did not know almost everything. Then we entered our blissful Junior year. We viewed the sophomores and the occasional freshmen that we saw with an air of superiority. Now the seniors seemed to take more notice of us, and some nzight even say Hello onee in a while. We strolled around East High, very certain of our own strength and knowledge. Now we felt more a part of the school. We came to know the teachers and .lolm L. Merrell much better. Al. last! the Senior Year! Now we relzied that we knew everything, even the teachers' first names. Freshies, sophs, and most of the juniors just didn't exist. Extracurricular activities and members ol' lhe opposite sex absorbed more time than studies. Finally came graduation. Our conceit disappeared and with hunlbelness and regret we realized that we now had to depart from East High. llntil then, we didn't realize how mueh East lligh was a part of us. We glanced at it witl1 tears in our eyes and a resolve in our heart to be worthy of a great school! SllNUlH!! HEAHEHS Each year brings the appointment of two new standard bearers by the faculty. For 19-l-2 Kenneth Dickinson and Cay Johnson were chosen. These standard bearers were K i1:NNn'rn DICKINSON CATHERINE JOHNSON selected for their excellent school record, for their interest in the school and its activities, and for their fine personalities. However, the honor of the position of Standard Bearer also inllicts duties. The Standard Bearer must keep up his good record and show himself worthy of the posi- tion at all times. He is guardian of the flag 'W' and, as such, he must 1'emain worthy of that oliice. 15
