AS YOU FINGER THE PAGES OF OUR LOG, MAY THE STORMS AND CALMS RETURN 'FROM THE SHADOWY PAST AND BECOME PART OF THE PRESENT ONCE MORE. AS YOU LOOK AT THE PICTURES OF YOUR CAPTAIN, OFFICERS AND CREW, MAY YOU HEAR THEIR VOICES AGAIN, AND RECALL THE MANY HOURS THEY SPENT AT YOUR SIDE BY THE WHEEL, GUIDING OUR WORTHY CRAFT INTO CALM SEAS. CONTENTS HONORABLY DISCHAROED LIFE ON BOARD SHIP,S TEAMS SHIP,S OFFICERS THE SPYGLASS FOR LANDLUBBERS 2 kk 4,. .1 . OF' XVILLIAMIC. WOLGAST WE HONOR OUR CAPTAIN September 1938 was the dawn of a new era in the seasoned life of the S.S. East High School. Our beloved Alma Mater found herself in new though not untried hands. Our spray-washed helm no longer felt the touch of those hands which had steered her safely through storm and calm for many long years of faithful service. Uncertain, the Crew watched with eyes which demanded much and greatly feared lest their new captain should not meet such strict standards. But oh, how groundless those fears were! Before the first month upon the high seas had passed, the genial smile of the Skipper had become a familiar sight upon the decks. Soon we found to our intense satisfaction that strong hands steered our storm-tossed Vessel to its destination. And so we wish to you, Mr. Wolgast, the best of luck as Skipper of East High School. As a token of our good will, we, the 1939 Crew, dedicate this, our HOrient, to you. 3 Zin jllllnzmnriam ROY E. DAVEY On November 1, 1938, our log recorded the passing of Roy E. Davey. With the same stroke ofthe pen and at the same time it also recorded a great loss to the good ship East High. Our scribe daily h welcomed the new day's blank page and had entered the day's account and osed the book withthe feeling of satis- faction that another day had passed leaving only something to the advantage of our ship. But this day our scribe regrets his positio,n'and slowly writes ofthe death of a noble oHicer. Only as the positions and circumstances, 'which were occupied and met by him, again made their annual appearance on the ship's Calendar, did we realize his great importance in our ship's life. Time alone has taught us how to readjust ourselves and get along without this beloved. We miss him. A greater honor no man could hold than to be missed and remembered by all who knew him. 4 ISQ Qfexb GX XQWQNXX XNQWY Cb fi sgxxbfc 'X Sai f' wg fm. ' 1.1 6 1 -flaw eff? LINDA BROWN naw Through the many hectic and storm-tossed meetings ofthe January 1939 crew in fo'c'sle 101, the advisers, Mrs. Linda Brown and Mr. F. Niles Bacon, saw to it that we kept on our course and did not drift toward the hidden shoals. When, because of our inexperience, we asked Mr. Bacon's advice, he would rise slowly, twirl his Phi Beta Kappa key, and set us on the right course. To Mrs. Brown the January 1939 crew owes a debt of gratitude for her diligent efforts to make every- thing we attempted as safe and successful as sailing in familiar waters. So, Mrs. Brown and Mr. Bacon, the crew of January 1939 salutes you in hopes that others may be as fortunate as we have been in having you as class advisers. Such strange things happened to the class of -lanuary 1939! No sooner had we learned the rules and regulations of the Annex than a drastic change took place in our orderly lives. Because of a large class entering the Annex in September we were thrown to our fate a half a year sooner than we had expected. VVe were pioneers all over again in the spacious Main huildingf, Like everything else, the change soon hecame more like English and less like Greek to us, and we were shouting for more worlds to conquer. All ofa sudden we became upper-classmen with that know-it-all look in our eyes, llut that was part of our make-up even if it did get on everyone's nerves. Then came that final term. Vlve knew all the words to the Alma lVlater. Our desire to hecome proficient in our studies increased, and we struggled to cram everything we didn't know into the remaining few months. The class of January 1939 will always he grateful to Mrs. lirown and Mr. liacon for their untiring efforts in helping us to have a successful party and graduation. We had the honor to he the last January class to graduate from East High School. Graduation was a very joyful and solemn occasion for it meant that the world was shouting for us to conquer it. 7 ROBERT ADF, BOB, S3 Rosewood Terrace Soccer 2, 3. 4: Track 2: Xmas Frolics 3: Growing Pains 3: Spanish Club: French Club: I. VVe, the crew of 1939, a conglomeration of inexperienced youth, are young, im- practical, radical, and sometimes even revolutionary, if We are to be judged by our ideas and inspirations. We have aired much this spirit in our class meetings in the shipys auditorium. We have planned activities and expressed desires which could hardly come true on dream ships, much less on our sturdy craft. The guides for our crew, Mr. Paul Reichel and Miss Lillian Lorscheider, have counteracted our unbridled attempts with logical and practicable suggestions, gained only through their vast experience on the sea of life. Thanks to them, most of our activities have sounded notes of sound judgment and have succeeded under their watchful eye. STANDARD BEARER HOWARD joos GUARDIAN OF THE FLAG JANIS KELLER 14 ,L lf JUNE CREW ,RENAL'D, Serrfinryg SMITH, Pre,v1'df1zf,' LIGHT, 1'z'ce-l'mririm1f, SPINK, Tr I1 ur HISTORY OF THE JUNE CREW One bright morning early in September 1935, a horde of optimistic freshmen trouped gaily up the gangplank of that trim little schooner Ear! High Arzrzfx fpost no billsj. A sorry looking lot we were too, and ye can lay to that! Oversized heads: long, lanky, awkward legsg ears flapping merrily in the wind, we trudged unsus- pectingly on board under the genial gaze of our tall and handsome skipper, Cap'n Harris. A year of innocent bliss followed: aye, and we swabbed the decks with nary a sign of seasickness, secure in the knowledge that we knew all there was to know and were just out for the ride! Aye, sweet delusions of a freshman!! Sophomorically, life became a veritable terror! Bunked securely in the dismal fo'c'sl of the Stately Vfrfel, we stared in stark terror at the swarthy seniors. The rolling seas turned our swimming heads toward the soon well-populated rail. And blast me scuppers, but this wasn't the worst! Stricken with the dismal misery of Sophomorosis, suddenly we heard the thundering approach of that terror of the seas, Simon Legreeu Merrell who cracked his snake-like whip with an evil laugh, are broiled Sophomore for every meal and fed his insatiable bloodhounds the leav- ings. Oh woes of the Merrell-chased Sophomoresl With the laurels ofjuniorship came much-needed sea-legs. And shiver me timbers if Simon Legreen didnlt attempt to lead us astray by enrolling us in that dis- reputable secret organization, Thr Royal Order of Merrfllorziarz Bloodhoundx, or- ganized for the sole purpose of plaguing Sophs. Ha, ha! Did we join the blackguard? You bet we did! The salt spray hardened our faces, and the seniors looked upon our lowly selves with a little less contempt. At last the glimmering lights of graduation pierced the darkness as we stood on senior deck and prepared for departure with the shadow of a tear in our seasoned eye. Now we could see the twinkle in the eyes of beloved Simon,,' stand tall and straight, recite both verses ofthe Alma Mater without blinking an eyelash, and glare with contempt upon the cowering Sophs. The dangers of Regents were history. Clubs, senior plays, Frolicf, teachers, Orient, all form a jumble of memories which compose the real East High School. And as we, the crew of June 1939, step forth, these are the memories we shall cherish as we shoot the rapids of life. 15 ADEI INF AC1lNltl,l,O, ADDIF, 171 l'1rst Street , V, l'rcnch Qlub 1, 2: Ping-Pong 1, 2: Renaissance 1, 2. Time staggers backwards and we find ourselves, and a lot of other people, in the year 1955. Paul Reichel, the chairman of the micromical winding department at Eart High School, stands watching with closed eyes from the utmost peak of the boiler room as the busy world Cmostly Rochesterj drowses past. He is searching for traces of the class of july '39 of which he was an adviser. As his gaze turns toward the four corners on a summer's afternoon, he linds Myron Gilberg artfully selling football souvenirs to the passing public. On another corner poses Mary Jane Lewis in a blue uniform, directing trafic. On the op- posite side Mr. Reichel pauses to look inside the corner barber shop run by George Trom- betta, who is adjusting his toupee as Verna Lichtwart enters to borrow the clippers Cto trim the hedgesj. The remaining corner reveals Henry Germano wheeling a baby carriage. Mr. Reichel yawns, scartches his head and then centers his attention on the Silly, Lizzy and Curr Co. department store. Behind the grocery counter he finds Edith Garsenstein selling tootsie-rolls for a quarter, while at the meat counter Cherie Perry is Watering dried herrings. In a remote corner of the main floor, he watches Dee Greenman, a prominent real-estate agent, renting telephone booths. In the candy department, Lenora Page is staging a list-light, boxing Fanny Farmer. Near the elevator Albert Bakker is selling stair casings. In the gardening and shrubbery department, Marjorie Baker is pruning shoe trees. On the fifth Hoor Robert Spink is collecting class dues as Verna Renaud sells keys for empty key-holes. Mr. Reichel turns his eyes away from Sillies' toward Main Street. At Main and North, John Tinlot rings a bell vigorously and adjusts his white beard as a little boy tells him what he Wants for Christmas. In front of McEdwards, Sandy Stevens and Marion Oakly are looking at furniture. On the South side of Main Street, Reichel's eyes rest upon a sign, tacked to a red brick building, reading 4'Virginia Prince Dancing School-Special Polka Classes-Big Apple at cut rates. At Main and State George Wabnitz, standing on a soap box, is delivering an address against the Townsend Plan. Next to the Y. M. C. A. Jane Light runs a cozy little tea room which serves crumpets with the trumpets. Mr. Reichel, hearing the music, stretches his neck until he spies Richard Goater winding the Victrola. Mr. Reichel turns his head to the right and sees Howard Heydt, as editor of the monthly gazette, working on last month's copy for next month's publication. At his desk stands his assistant, Harland Bowdey, with an inverted ink-bottle. He has just finished Hlling fountain pens. At a prominent night spot, Annabell Crandall, Carol Noble, and Virginia Dunlap are singing a duet. From a loudspeaker system comes the voice of Edward De Roo still urging everyone to vote for Landon. Mr. Reichel hears the groaning horn of a Ford, and as he turns to the center of attraction he finds Howard Joos just returning from Harvard. Across the street from the disturbance, Rosemary Savage and Kay Buckley have opened a beauty salon which is introduced by the sign Keep your chins up. As our adviser turns'toWard the suburb he sees Marjorie Blossom, garbed in a tan artist's smock, dotting the i's on a Blue Sunoco sign. He has seen enough. He is afraid to look farther. Sighing heavily he slowly descends up to his seventh period class muttering to himself, What a line bunch they were. 42 'gt 23 1 V f jf wfffs V'-' 5 rl, I Ffh X 'T , H ,ff ,BQ ' ly V S 'D A - ' . East High has need of firm hands, not only to guide its prow safely through troubled waters, but to prepare its crew and passengers for any adventure which they may meet after bidding farewell to their beloved ship. Our Head Oilicers have fearlessly assumed these responsibilities for the full 36 years of our shipls voyage, with the few changes effected only raising our standard to its present high level. The best proof of our Chief Officers' elhciency is the excellence ofthe scholastic standard they have established, their reputation has been spread by the graduates whom they have launched successfully into life. 70 X P' W .ff ' I Ader, Wallin-, Geyer.
