Eppinger G. W. Cleland Faculty Advisors When Grant W. Cleland and Mrs. J. Guinan Eppinger were appointed advisors for the Class of January, 19x7, the selection was considered by the entire class to be a most fortunate and happy one. Both were very friendly and des irous of promoting class activities in the most advantageous manner possible; both considered every member of the class a friend. The loss of Mr. Cleland through a most unfortunate accident in 1915 was partially nullified with the appointment of George J. Moyer to be his successor. Mr. Moyer had the unusual advantage of having known most of the boys since their entrance into East High School through study hall contact. This acquaintance with the boys Mr. Moyer has fostered tenderly throughout his advisorship and is now the friend of all those who were privileged in having met him. Girl class advisors in East High School have been consistently good, and so it must be an exceptionally good advisor who can stand out. Mrs. Eppinger has been just such a rare counsellor. Always at the service of the class, Mrs. Eppinger has been tire¬ less in her interest and activity. In the short time that Mr. Cleland was with the class as advisor he succeeded in fixing himself firmly with the boys both through his friendly manner and gracious service. It was with great joy indeed that the class learned of Mr. Cleland’s return to teaching after his accident. i j I I j I I $ 13 LA fc lj glS5SS5 p ' OCKtf ORIENTC k v. iiiviv avv - ! ; i : i ; Prelude M.y thoughts once ascended the hilltop of Reminiscence. Undecided 43 c r Ae QRIENTGV) a VCMX.w x, mxa .V; s r H Class History When Darwin was munching his cud of evolution, he permitted one morsel of thought to remain undigested. Careful as he was to fit the ancestor of man with a tail, he forgot to present to the world the developments that occur in a group of human beings. It remained for the class of January twenty-seven, abundantly talented as it is, to correct Darwin’s forgetfulness, and exemplify itself as a type in the evolution of groups. In this philanthropic cause, I take prideful pleasure in stating that their conduct in East High has been so significant that the knowledge of it might even be barred from Tennessee classrooms, and used by some eminent scientist in a book to supplement Darwin’s “Origin of Species.’’ The author of such a work might well consider the following data: Period of Fecundity: January 1913-1914: Some of the Annexites discovered that they would receive their diplomas together in January 1917, and immediately began to respect each other. This half-formed friendship developed into an organization with voluntary advisors and dues. The following semester came the exportation of the partly organized class of January 1917, to the Main Building. A barbaric species of pupils who hailed from junior high schools and were in the habit of going about corridors in white shirtsleeves, entered East High that semester and were automatically recruited into the ranks of January 1917. Period of Fermentation: January 1915-1916: East High School authorities officially sanctioned the class and furnished it with two shepherds, Grant W. Cleland and Mrs. Jessie Eppinger. The class met as a whole for the first time and elected Robert Young, president; Mary Sutherland, vice-presi¬ dent; Ada Vick, secretary; Richard Burns, treasurer. The following September Mr. Cleland was unable to return to East High School and was replaced by George J. Moyer, known at that time to all the boys of the class as “that study hall tyrant’’ and in a few weeks to the rest of the class as “that co¬ operative big boy.” $ t A 44 c rjAe ORIENT C CSSSSS v i w.w y= ; 1 ’ ; i : To name their first social event the “Junior Jinx,” the class held it on Friday even¬ ing, November 13. So effective was the cider and music at the party that each merry¬ maker could call each other by his first name and middle initial before the evening was over. Period of Accomplishments: January 1916-1917. As seniors, members of the class made January 1917, historical. During the term the class made its bow in dramatics with the presentation of Philip Barry’s “Young¬ est.” John Needham and Marjorie Ward taking the leading parts in the play caused as much favorable comment as the subject of bombs at an anarchist meeting. The following term the economizing p lan of combining with the June seniors in the publication of a class book was accepted by the class. Mitchell Rappaport, famous son of the famous class, was entrusted with the editorship of the January 1917 divi¬ sion of the book. The class succeeded in draping the school with the haunted atmosphere of rotting spooks and icy hands by presenting the mystery play, “The Thirteenth Chair.” A final celebration of Halloween was staged as the “Senior Scurry.” The affair had its exciting moments. Paul A. McGhee strolled in unexpectedly from New York, George S. Carhart donned an orange and black hat and danced, Harold Fagan assumed a gruff tone in his voice and told fortunes behind locked doors. Senior Day was the climax of every pleasantry connected with the business of at¬ tending school. Every class member successfully hid his identity as a civilized, church¬ going citizen of Rochester. Long earrings, glaringly-colored bits of drapery, enough jewelry to start a red-painted jewelry store, and a sufficient supply of black shirts to soothe Mussolini, went to transform the class of January, 1917, into a band of mis¬ cellaneous-looking beings that resembled a stranded group of Hollywood extras. The afternoon of Senior Day was sedately spent at the Eastman Theatre. In the evening there was a banquet that served as an excellent excuse for absence on the following Monday, and dancing. One night members of the class were given speeches, diplomas, and handshakes, and the curtain was rung down for January 1917. A few in the class, when the call came for encores, remained after graduation to instruct new seniors on “Perfect Behavior in East High.” The others were satisfied to face life’s jokes and to occasionally make toasts with mysterious liquid mixtures to “The Class of January 1917, that corrected Darwin’s forgetfulness.” Jerry G. But What Is It To Be Nothing Else But Inebriated! April, 1927 Jacob Abramson, June ' 27 East High School Rochester, N. Y. Dear Editor: You asked me a while ago to write a class history and,— by the way, I just received a quart of genuine Gray Mare Scotch. It is rather late now, and I am sipping it as I write. Well, now to get down to business. You know the class, assimilated from the East High Annexes and W. J. H. S., actually became organized under the advisory of Mrs. Toolan and Mr. Hammond in its Junior year. The class showed a great deal of enthusiasm over its first election of class officers. Results: John Sleght- President Joe Truax - Vice Pres. Mildred Harris- Secretary Alfred Rapp- Treasurer. Immediately class interest was aroused and why not, with a social committee, real class parties, the Junior Prom and the Junior Jubilee. Why a fellow would never have thought that there were such pretty girls in the class. What an orchestra! What punch! Oh say, as I remind myself about the punch, I begin to think of this Scotch. I ' ve been drinking such bad stuff lately that this has little effect on me, little effect on me. The movement to combine the annuals was started when various education officers frowned upon the practise of soliciting advertising for two class books. Action of the Rochester Ad Club and of merchants in combating “bootleg” adver¬ tising has created a veritable dread against advertising in any medium but the news¬ paper. Business managers of the Orient this year had to combat these combatants, so to speak, and their work has been more difficult than the work of any previous managers. If editorial work was made any easier by combining the Jamia and Orient , the editors have no testimonial letters to that effect. The burning of the photographer’s office and practically all of the Orient negatives shortly before Christmas threw the work way behind schedule. i I 10(5 t SX, V2g V?CSSSSS cS Oke. Plays of many varieties—mystery plays, costume presentations, and light comedies—were on the dramatic program of the past year. Three classes contributed talent enough to be developed by Miss Katherine Burns for the presentation of four productions. After establishing its Barrymore talent in two presentations of the “ Youngest ” during the previous season, January 19x7, began the 1917 dramatic menu with a professionally-toned production of “ The Thirteenth Chair.” The June graduates followed with the presentation of “ Not So Long Ago,” presenting it in a manner which brought out the historical charm of the play. The apparent ability of histri¬ onic members of the June class to take part in costume plays led to the presentation of another pretentious costume play, “The Road to Yesterday.” The senior term class furnished the climax to the excellence of the year’s bill with a cleverly produced comedy of college life, “At the End of the Rainbow.” During the mid-year the Faculty provided pupils of East High with enough admir¬ ation for their pedagouges to suffice for the rest of the semester. The difficult task of carrying out the smoothness of all the class productions was admirably accomplished by Miss Katherine Burns. Those who understand the brain- racking intricacies connected with the proposition of presenting a play, marvel with no little admiration at Miss Burns’ versatile, industrious role in East High. Hinga Music Orchestral music at East High school reached a new high standard this year under the direction of Karl Van Hoesen. Mr. Van Hoesen was called to East High School in September to replace David Mattern, an able conductor, who had accepted a position in Michigan. Perhaps the most difficult task in the world is that of living up to a tradition established by an unusually successful predecessor, yet Mr. Van Hoesen has done so well, that the work of the orchestra and band under his direction has been more advanced than it ever has been. The annual band and orchestra concert was pre¬ sented before a large crowd with exceptionally laudatory criticisms. Mr. Hinga has had a busy season with his glee clubs and quartets, most notable of which has been the boys’ quartet. The opening of school in September found a group of four tall youths whom he molded into his “twenty-four feet of harmony,’’ an unus¬ ually popular quartet. The work of the glee clubs has been of such a finished character this year that Mr. Hinga has begun work on the presentation of “Mikado” in June. This is the largest piece of work attempted by any local high school musical organiza¬ tion in recent years. Mr. Hinga has picked a remarkably able cast which should make fora most excellent production. “Mikado” will culminate years of hard effort on the part of Mr. Hinga and will undoubtedly prove a fitting climax to Mr. Hinga’s work here. Once again, not a single defeat mars the record of an East High soccer team, and another championship is added to an already impressive list. Faced with a lack of experienced material, only four veterans remaining from 192.5, Coach “Pete” McKay set out after the city championship. It did not take “Pete” very long to find out that he had the right material, but all that was needed was some constant drilling. Soon perfect co-ordination between a strong, aggressive forward wall, and a steady, capable back- field, developed by Coach McKay from a squad of willing candidates, displaced all individual play, and when time for the. first game rolled around, East High was ready with a “dark horse” championship team, which proceeded to trounce every member of the league at least once. There were no “All Schola¬ stic” teams picked by the various Rochester news¬ papers, but, had any teams been picked, such players as the Sundstrom brothers, Jim Brower, Mert Linhos, Capt. Dick Ader, Ed Hayes, would undoubtedly have been picked. Frosh over East High teams for the past four years, constitute the high lights of this year s colorful basketball season. The sensational shooting displayed by Ted Gordon and Hyman Bushkin, together with the fine floor game put up by Mike Kowal, and the steady, easy-going game of Morris Carr in contrast to the loping antelope dribble of Frank Gervasi was too much for East High’s opponents. Rival after rival fell before the machine-like precision of the East High team. The team began the season with eight consecutive victories, which included a win over Fairport, a wholesale rout of West High by a score of Z5-9, and a brilliant victory over Hutchinson of Buffalo. The team stopped off long enough in Griegsville to drop their first loss of the season, 13 -zi. Then, gathering impetus again, the team proceeded to steam-roll over West High, the U. of R. Frosh and Monroe High. In the inter¬ sectional tourney, an easy victory was won over Warsaw, but East High succumbed to the onslaught of a superior Fairport team in the semi-final round. Enter, and at thy command Pleasing visions shalt thou see. Round the land is known the fate Of a class whose fame is wide. Past and Future shall ope the gate; He who wouldst know, to him they’ll confide Ere thy stay in this land is done, Carried on the winds of Destiny, Your fate shall be uttered ere set of sun; Or else on the crystal waves of the sea. Fear not, I see a royal sight; Join we our hands, and let us draw near. Under these colors of purple and white Nestles a sprite whose voice I hear. “Ever in after years,” ’twas spoken, “The members of this class shalt be Worthy, honored, he lpful; and clothed in Enduring and sterling quality. Not all may be the ones who lead; This is not requisite for success. Yet all shalt be known for their deeds, Sincereness of purpose and truthfulness.” Ended the words of the spirit there. Verily, not in all my years, three score and eleven, Ever was class greeted with prophecy so fair, Now go ye forth, and fulfill that of June ’ 2 . 7 . The design for the pin was drawn by Charles Hendrickson, a pupil at the Goodman Annex, and approved by the Council as the design which best exem¬ plified the school. The charm of the pin lies in its delicacy in execution. The tower selected as the most representative feature of the arch¬ itecture of the building, is in exceedingly good perspective.
