Our Alma Mater dear, to thee we sing, May all thy future years new honors bring, May friends thy banner raise, thy foes grow less, All love and praise to our old E. H. S. I5 ORIENT Class Poem Once, 'midst the silent passing on of years, Time paused To find the earth, vibrant with hope and tensely gayg For night, brooding in mystic shapes of shadows dim, Stood trembling on the threshold of a dawning dayg Watched as the first faint spark of reawakening strength Brought to the ear the murmur of Life's steady Way, Rich in its dreams of hope and chance in bright array. A new day dawned, was lived, and slowly passed away. And now We, too, pause on an unmarked threshold here, Twixt High School days, thronged with tried friends an dear, And all that lies ahead for us unlived in years VVhen opportunity and life draw swiftly near. We feel the strength of power, throbbing in our veins: The World seems fair and goodly rich to our young eye: And our ambition craves a share forithee, East High. A new day dawns and livesg and so we say good-bye. 16 d memories WUHU ZAUE' THE' EFIWIUI JL O R I E N T Ofjicers of the Senior Class NORMAN IVIILLER ISABEL HERDLE Pre:-ident Vice-Prfxident MOREAU SMITH ALMA FRANKENFELD Treasurer Secretary 18 ORIENT DOROTHY ALICE ABERT 581 Melville Street Who if pretty to walk with, And witty to talk with, And pleamnt, too, to think on? Receiving D, T. as thy privilege and pay, Enjoying the pains of some teacher's lair, Sophomores take heed and beware! 111 ORIENT History of The East IT is an astonishing fact that comparatively few East High students now know when, how and why the customary senior annuals were originated. The great event happened in May, 1904, when the glorious class of '04 took it into its head to print an annual,-with only six weeks to get it out, where a college board needs six months. That class called its Volume the Senior An- nual, but for many years afterward similar logs were entitled the Senior Annual of the Clarion, showing that it was a special issue of the Clarion jointly by the Clarion and the senior class. The sophomore year of the class of 1905 ushered in a notable event that was the com- pletion and occupation of the new building on Alexander Street. That class seemed to have some regrets in leaving the South Fitzhugh Street School, now the Municipal Building. The Spectator fthe Clarionj observes in 1905 that the time is drawing near when the Rochester High School will be divided between East and West High Schools. The Spectator felt that neither school could alone be strong enough to maintain for Rochester the high standard which up to that time had been set by the Rochester High School. He suggested that it would be unfair to the west side pupils-when West High School should come into existence-that the past credit of the victories of the Rochester'High School should be given to East High School, that unless the two schools combined in the support of a single team the long string of victories in athletics would be cut short, and that the two schools could not support a paper for each, since it was hard enough then to get suliicient acceptable liter- ary material for one paper. How little could the Spectator know us-the coming generations! Football, perhaps the major sport in these days, played a great part in the interest of the High School Annuals annuals. Basketball and baseball follow closely in importance, while hockey and tennis were recognized as more important sports than today. Until very recently there has been no mention of swimming teams, but a great deal is made of the indoor as well as the outdoor track and cross- country teams. The first appearance of the relay team was pictured in the 1909 Annual when the Chess Club, German Club, and Nature Club were especially active. Debates, now seldom mentioned, were held by the interscholastic girls' and boys' teams, all proving rather successful on the whole. Another side of school life was displayed in the sororities and fraternities and in the Publi- cium Concilium, with the members of the Ro- man State, fwho gave the Alcestis of Euripedes in English in 191515 frequently photographed in their dignified robes. Records show that there has been only one Junior farce, that in 19103 the idea of having a Senior farce first appeared in 1914, and since then has become a tradition, although the Senior play has been in existence since the first annual and probably long before that. The Girls' and Boys' Glee Clubs from all appearances were considered in former years more important than the orchestra, and only very recently has the East High School Band come to the front. A more interesting feature of the annuals appeared in 1915, that is, the individual photo- graphs of the Seniors with what the various classes termed squibs, skits, digs, grinds, or who's who, meaning of course the quotations describing each unhappy senior. In years to come when other summaries of annuals are given, and this book may be in- cluded in them, who knows how June 1923 will be treated? 112 I3 CT gin 5- . DAVEY ORIENT The Agora OR the purpose of arousing interest in the Greek language and in litera- ture, the Agora was organized in some of the high schools along the Hudson, including New York and Albany. Introduced into East. High School by Doctor Mason D. Gray, one of the principal activities of the state body was the conducting among the chapters, competitive examinations in each of the three years of Greek. These were usually made out by a committee of college professors, and conducted in the schools in the spring, like Regents examinations. In May or June of each year, a convention was held in one of the high schools belonging to the Agora, and prizes awarded to the winners of the examinations. The last conven- tion was held at East High School just before the War. Since this time the State body has been inactive. This term the East High School Agora has held successful social affairs and a contest in play-writing, for which cash prizes were offered to John Frankland, and Robert Lochner. The Agora has again become a live and active organization. Previous to its existence, deposits were collected in the different home rooms every Tuesday morning. This system required at least one col- lector in each room and also the super- vision of each home room teacher. Un- der the new system, the pupils make their deposits at the wire bank exactly as they do in a regular bank. In one year, the number of depositors has doubled, together with the amount of money. There is taken in, on the average, six hundred dollars every four Weeks, the greatest number of depositors at any one time being two hundred and twenty-two persons. The size ofthe deposits ranges from ten cents to fifty dolla1's. The money received is taken to the bank each week at the close of the day's business and is at once added to the different pupils' accounts. The success of the bank depends upon the number of pupils who learn the habit of depositing. We realize the difficulty of saving money in high school, but know that it is a splendid opportunity to test the will power, Which, under present day conditions is subjected to severe strain. On the whole, we consider the bank experiment successful. I-Iaupt in 1950-This story was told to the writer bv R. Stocker, President of Sears . 9 Roebuck Sz Co. It seems that F. I-Iaupt, a customer of the Firm and proprietor ofa small store in a Missouri cross-roads town, ordered a bill of goods from the company. Upon receipt of the goods he refused payment. Mr. Stocker wrote to Mr. Haupt stating that unless pay- ment was forth-coming a law suit would be started. Other letters were also sent out to persons involved in the case, one to the station-agent, asking about the condition of the goods on ar- rival, another to the president of the bank asking for a statement of the financial standing of the customer, a third to the mayor of the town requesting him to recommend a good local lawyer to take the case. Shortly afterward a letter was received from Mr. Haupt which read as follows: Dear Sits: I received your letter telling me I had better pay up. Being station agent I may make a state- ment about the goods. As president of the bank I can assure you as to my Enancial standing. In the capacity of mayor, I hesitate to recommend a lawyer since I am the only member of the harm this vicinity. Ifl were not pastor of the local Methodist church, I would tell you to go to H-L. 167 C0-Eds Delight in using Stromberd-Carlson RADIO HEAD SETS The broad head band extends away from hair and the Adjustment Rod Telescope Il feature which prevents the hair or net from being caught. .4512 Your Dealer J A l . .I Q V K N tfHE5'Fj :rails-fin ' .. . , R W.
