We grew in those oppor- tunities, making friends and attaching to ourselves new abilities. We progressed each day . . . each class . . . and as we did we began to see the key fit its notches and prepare to turn again to throw open the door of a bigger and older world. 1 l Z X 1 2 I E Q 5 f 3 5 E z 5 c 9 X fl Z P 5 I 5 2 E i 3 . LILBURNE VOLLMER The MUSTANG takes great pleasure in dedicating their 1956-57 yearbook to Mrs. Lilburne Vollmer. It is very appropriate that a person possessing such a pleasing personality and such admirable traits as Mrs. Vollmer be named to exemplify our overall theme: Doors of Opportunity. Mrs. Vollmer always has time to praise a student's extracurricular accom- plishments or give helpful advice. She has contributed her experience as one of the sponsors of the Junior Class, and her work with the Commercial Club has given many the key to secretarial work. An even greater achievement is her position as sponsor and advisor to the Student Council. Through this in- terest Mrs. Vollmer has instilled her own characteristics of leadership into Student Council officers and in turn formed a very active group. The key formed through association with Mrs. Vollmer does not fit any patricular door. In this key are notches of fairness, leadership, interest, under- standing, loyalty, knowledge, and other intangible precepts which will con- tribute to opening the 4'Doors of Opportunity which lead to an unlimited future. As we turn the knobs and peep inside we see ourselves first in Junior High. This is a new experience for all of us. It is now that we get a glimpse of what life will be like when we get older. As Sophomores we are continually moving. On every hand are clubs to join, activities to participate in, and assemblies to attend. We benefit greatly from our outside activities, as well as oureducational courses. This new ad- venture into Senior High is indeed an exciting one. As Juniors we live our most impressive year on the threshold of leader- ship. The radiant glow of class rings manifests our pride and expectations of approaching another step of education. Now, as Seniors, we feel as if we have learned everything in the room be- hind the doorway of classes, actually, this is just the reception room. In a few short weeks we will put on our caps and gowns and walk on, through many more open-doors. ! 1 1 2 Tj l 2 , J 5 1 5 5 3 S 1 5 2 1 I Y I4 SUSAN HILL CODY BEN EDWARD CARTER One who is eager to see and to help. Coinciding with the course of study, events throughout the year not only promote school spirit but enable us to ac- quire a well-rounded education. As the current school year got into full swing, Homecoming Week arrived with much excitement, climaxed by the crowning ofthe football queen. Within the next few months the Seniors selected the most deserving and outstanding among themselves, on whom they bestowed the highest Senior honor, a place in the Hall of Fame. Spring arrived, and the Seniors began casting and rehearsing for the Senior Class play, the final pres- entation of their talents and efforts. Ending the year that has brought forth to all both fun and work, the prom with all its gaiety was the conclusion of the 195-6-57 school session. f l f 3 l Q f 21 3, L,z1. ,, 1... Homecoming was an occasion that will long be remembered. On the Wednesday night before the game there was a spaghetti supper given by the Boosters' Club. The junior and 'the senior classes competed to sell the most tickets, and the junior class was the winner. In the homecoming game East defeated Humes. At the half the score was 7-0, with East ahead. The final tally showed East still in the lead 13-6. Highlighting the evening was the crowning of the football queen before the game. Citizens of Japan Will it rain? Whether we play on the team or support the team, it is through contact with athletics that the true meaning of spirit and unity be- comes known. For the athlete there is the chance of developing the body, learning the importance of team play, and just plain doing what is fun. For the spectator there is the chance to display school loyalty, and to spend many exciting evenings 'cpulling for the MUSTANGS.,' The athletic teams have done well this year. A more devoted student body would be hard to find. A second place league finish and high district stand- ing recalls the spirited red and gray basketball squad. Q. 4 ACTIVITIES Club meetings and the projects and activities planned by the clubs open a most important door in the life of an East High student. School days contain more than learning, and the all round student is sure to participate in school organizations. The broad minded, well-versed adult has secured his training from these youth organizations. An interest in only a few of the many clubs open to a student at East will insure a citizen interested in community affairs in the future. Leadership, sportsmanship, consideration, and ability to cooperate are some of the valuable qualities gained from the experience of working in high school organizations. Self confidence and an ability to express oneself are equally important to any person desiring to be recognized and respected. The activities and organizations at East provide the opportunities to develop into oustanding citizens. It is for us to take these opportunities and with the key that unlocks the door to the club meetings on Friday unlock the door to a successful and happy future. The staff under the guidance of Miss Eliza- beth Wills energetically went to work, and the result was the revolutionized annual. The months rolled by! The yearbook office became a second home. Starting its activities at the first of school by helping with registration, the Student Council began a year of many accomplishments. An orientation club assembly, at which presidents of school organizations told of their activities, was held early in the school year. In October Horse Sense, East's Student Handbook, was distributed to all students. The Student Council initiated the idea of silent prayer in the cafeteria before lunch each day. Leadership classes in parliamen- tary procedure and other subjects were held throughout the year. East High students saw how their presidential votes compared with actual results in the presidential poll. Charity drives and boosting of school spirit and morale complemented the regular yearly activities. East served as President of the Tennessee Association of Student Councils and attended state sessions in Nashville and Knoxville. Student Council was also represented at the Southern Asso- ciation of Student Councils in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by two members. The East High Chapter of the National Honor Society consists of five percent of the Junior Class and ten percent of the Senior Class, therefore, the total membership does not exceed fifteen percent of the entire Senior Class. Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service are the bases for induction into the Society. This year, in order to promote scholarship, the members of the Society have pro- vided Honor Ribbons for all junior and senior high students who made the Honor Roll. Parties honoring new members have also been held during the year. Vice-President JOANNA ROBERTS I Ez can 21:1 U32 Yuwsg?
