For thirty-four years, Mr. Bracken has taught, inspired, and influenced countless numbers of East High students in their quest for learning. His vast knowledge and exceptional speaking ability have enabled him to teach his subject effectively. His fine personal qualities have inspired and influenced all who have had the privelege of knowing him. The students have deeply appreciated his work through the years in the Voice of Democracy contests and have looked for- ward to the Detroit trip which he organizes and directs annually. East is indeed fortunate in having a man of his ability, integrity, and dedication on its faculty. The Class of June l96l, salutes Mr. Bracken, and wishes him many more wonderful years at East High. MR. HERBERT BRACKEN ADMINISTRATION A genuine interest in the welfare of every student, an unceasing effort to make East the finest school in the city--these are but two of the qualities that place Mr. Sabgir, our prin- cipal, and Mr. Krino, our assistant principal, in the uppe r ranks of administrators in the Akron Public Schools. Mr. Sabgir is completing his fourth year at East this June, having previously served as principal at Grace Elementary and Jennings Junior High. His educational background in- cludes a Bachelor of Science degree earned at Akron University and a Master of Educa- tion from Kent State University. In addition to his many responsibilities as principal, Mr. Sabgir has also been serv- ing on impo rtant committees of the Akron Public Schools. His service on these com- mittees has, in turn, greatly benefited East. He is a me mbe r of the Ad Hoc Committee , an advisory board to the superintendant, the P r o fe s sional Problems Committee, the Committee for School and Community Rela- tions, and the Advi s o ry Committee for the Administrative Council. Mr. Krino has long been affiliated with East High as teacher, as coach, and as ad- ministrator. His dedicated efforts at obtain- ing scholarships for seniors have been espe- cially appreciated by senior classes both past and present. Mr. Krino was chosen Coach of the Year in l95l and was one of the founders of the East High Hall of Fame. He served as Pre sident of the Touchdown Club for two years, he is now a member of the Executive Committee of that organization. Mr. Krino is also a member of the Assistant Principals' Salary Committee, the Phi Delta Kappa EX- ecutive Committee , and the Northeastern Ohio District Board of Athletics. He earned both his B ache lo r of Science and Master of Education from the University of Akron. East High is proud to have as its leaders two such able and dedicated men. 20 MR. HARRY SA BGIR MR. In a season filled with heart-breaking losses, spectacular wins, superb defensive efforts, superior offensive line play, and most of all injuries, the Orientals dis- played remarkable courage and battled to within six points of obtaining a record five straight champion- ships, losing in the gloom and mire of the playoffs. The season opened with a loss to St. Vincent, but was followed by two decisive wins over North and Firestone. Then, looking ahead to Garfield, the team dropped a heart breaker to Walsh, 6-O. But their foresight paid off. In one of the most decisive wins in the high school football history, East completely overpowered Gar- field, 14-O, battering the mighty Rams continuously, and making Homecoming a truly special occasion. But a letdown is what usually happens after a big win, and unfortunately that is what happened to the Orientals the following week. Meeting an aroused Kenmore squad, East fought well, holding a half- time lead of lil-0, the second half, however, was plagued with mistakes and fumbles, and the final score: Kenmore 26, East 14. But this defeat did not hamper the team's morale. Back they came with two more wins to end the reg- ular season in a three-way first place tie in the City Series. Drawing the number one spot, East was forced to play'Garfield in the Playoffs. A terrific struggle loomed ahead. The playoff day dawned cloudy and rainy. It rained all day turning the Rubber Bowl into a mud bowl. The conditions were hardly adequate for football, but the games went ahead as scheduled. After Kenmore had defeated North on yardage and turned what remained of the field into nothing but a quagmire, East came out to do battle. In a vicious, hard-fought struggle, Garfield scored early on two lucky breaks. No matter how hard they tried, the Orientals could not come back. They fought gallantly, but the reign of the Dragon had come to a close. But the end of that dynasty only marks the be- ginning of another. With the tremendous coaching staff and dedicated underclassmen, East should start next year to build a new dynasty unequaled in Akron history. 88 EAST EAST EAST EAST EAST EAST EAST EAST EAST SCORES 6 St. Vincent 20 2.8 North 8 40 Firestone 6 O Walsh 6 l4 Garfield O l4 Kenmore 26 lZ Buchtel O Z0 Central 8 PLAYOFFS 6 Garfield 12. The team ended its season with four more losses and was eliminated in the first round of the Sec- tional Tournament by Crestwood, 50 to 45. Over the years, the Oriental run- ners have compiled an almost incredible 85-3 won-lost record in dual competition. Consis- tently on top, the Orientals kept that tradition during the 1968 season. The squad breezed through their regular sea- son with eight consecutive victories. They then went on to capture the coveted Grand Slam of Track and Field in the Akron area: the Akron Relays, the City Championship, and the District track meet. lt was their fifth consecutive Dis- trict Championship and their fourth-out-of-the- last-five City Championship. The l968 team lost many outstanding mem- bers through graduation. New talent, however, should help to uphold the winning tradition of East in track and field. 101 BASEBALL 1967-68 BASEBALL Row OneqL to RQ: M. Barron, B. Talbot, L. Yovanovich, S. Gandee, F.
