i?ZW Y ' UV e 3 1 X-s v. A fi tf MINARET 19GI Fm wW ' Three very important years of our lives are spent within this beautiful building on Brittain Road. Here we come each day, in work and in play, to take part in the exciting adventure of learning. Here, with the guidance of a dedicated faculty, we learn to love whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report. On the succeeding pages of this book are recorded some of the bright and unforgettable moments of one of these wonderful years spent at East. East W )k Cckod Mr. Tucker came to East this year from Ellet where he had been principal for four years. Prior to that time, he had been assistant principal at Buchtel, and mathematics teacher and counselor at West. His experience in the Akron Public Schools totals twenty-six years. Born in Cincinnati, Mr. Tucker moved with his family to Akron when he was in the lower grades. He was graduated from Central High School and the Ohio State University and the University of Akron. He has the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science in Education, and Master of Science in Education. Mr. Tucker holds a Phi Beta Kappa key, and is a member of Phi Kappa Delta and Kappa Delta Phi both national educational fraternities. His work and his home are Mr. Tucker ' s main interests. His family consists of a daughter who is married and a son and a daughter who attend Cuyahoga Falls High School. Mr. Tucker ' s constant effort to improve the academic program of the school of which he is the principal leaves little time for leisure activities. He devotes as much time as possible to reading. Mr. Tucker ' s philosophy which we readily share may be summed up as follows: To have a school in which each pupil and each teacher is striving to achieve the best educationally. ■Yew Wt uuefc Sfeit Sylvia Waldsmith: Composer and Proofreader Rita Dalton: Editor-in-Chief Mary Harless: Artist and Typist Ellen Rivenbark: Artist and Typist Walker Coffman: Art Editor Pat Cabe: Photographer I fSSjy Mr. Krino . . . I am Education. I bear the torch that enlightens the world, fires the imagination of man, and feeds the flames of genius. I give wings to dream and might to brawn and brain. From out the silent shadows of the past I come, wearing the scars of struggle and the stripes of soil, but bearing in triumph the wisdom of all the ages. Man, because of me, holds dominion over earth, air, and sea; it is for him I, leash the lightning, plumb the deep, and shackle the waves of ether. I am the parent of progress, the creator of culture, and the molder of destiny. Philosophy, science, and art are my handy works. I banish ignorance, discourage vice, disarm anarchy. Thus have I become freedom ' s citadel, the arm of democracy, the hope of youth, the pride of adolescence, the joy of age. Fortunate the nations and happy the homes that welcome me. The school is my workship; here I stir ambitions, stimulate ideals, forge the keys that open the door to opportunity, the master of human destiny. I am the source of inspiration, the aid of aspiration, for I am Irrestible Power. 17 12 Grade Attendant Carol Fairman Jim Stair R4yafttj 1960 L Ipl ik ' k ® i 1 ' 1 1 1 ■■I ' V -i AN] MAY QUEEN COURT 1 1 Grade Attendant Susie Paritt Gary Logue 10 Grade Attendant Joyce Fender Duane Willis May Queen and Crowner Queen ' s Escort: James Smith May Queen Court Linda Ohlinger Jim Sasanecki May Queen Court Crowner Beverly Veal May Queen Court Carole Allbritten Escort Frank Satterwhite Bonnie Powell Dem etrious Manuselis Don Eiber 18 mN WL ttay Quee« - U uy Wc£ ■1 1 f 1; r 1 it ' ll f - 1 ? ■T W - , 1960 A w fe« Stat 9- I gii M fll 1 •• V ■:H ' : ' t f| ffl ■• - B MRS. First of all, a special thanks to Mrs. McLeland, our advisor, for her patience and guidance — for the many hours she generously gave to make this publication possible. Thanks, too, to Mr. Mendelson, our photographer, and to Mr. Leahy, our representative from the Myers Year Book Company. We are grateful also to the fac ulty, and you, the students who cooper- ated so well with photographers, and with our sales drive. We hope that you will appreciate the time and effort that has been put into the Minaret for you — that in the years ahead, this book will bring back many happy memories of your years spent at East. Best wishes, The Minaret Staff.
