Each year, the Senior class selects one special person for yearbook dedication. This year our Senior class selected Mr. Jimmie Smith, 9th grade unit prin- cipal, for our 1988-1989 yearbook dedication. Mr. Smith attended Union Academy High School. After graduation he attended Florida A M Universi- ty, Cleveland State University, Kent State University, Baldwin-Wallace, and Mt. Saint Joseph's. He later completed a curriculum writing course at Case Western Reserve. In 1972 he obtained his Master of Arts degree from Cleveland State University, where his major was elementary education. (K-8). Mr. Smith comes from a family of educators. He has two sisters, one brother, and one daughter who are all educators. His son is a graduate of Penn State University, and his daughter is a junior at Kent State University. Mr. Smith says that at East High every adult is a leader, and a role model in the students lives. His main goal is to see a decline in the high school dropout rate. He wants to see 99% of the students graduate. He says The students have to acquire a love for education ! All students are special to him, and he encourages them to continue on in school. I can see a little of myself in all students ! Mr. Smith gave this final message to seniors, In whatever you do be consistent, persistent, and insistent. Know so- cieties rules and pick a partner, a good one, to assist and be understanding . To the undergraduates he gives this message, Be aware and encouraged to know that educa- tion is necessary . When asked how he felt about having the year- book dedicated to him, he said that he prefers to be unknown, the less said the better! But we've been here long enough to know and anyone can i tell you, that's almost impossible! WE THANK YOU MR. SMITH, JUST FOR BEING YOURSELF MR. JIMMIE SMITH 9TH GRADE UNIT PRINCIPAL
