It is the symbol of the spirit of East High School, a forward spirit of progress and growth. The EXODUS staff hopes the 1959 yearbook will in itself symbolize the spirit of East High School progress to which it is respec- fully dedicated. The staff begs indul- gence for errors but hopes there are not very many. Forward, then, through the school year with No- blesse Oblige, the motto of our Alma Mater. 1.35:-Sig...31::-511: f ' 1 4 o -. 4 w 9 'v . Oi. . 'Hn AJ'-I hm EXODUS speaks for the East High School student body when it acknowledges its debt of gratitude to the East High School faculty and administration. Going forward is not merely a matter of passing time but of growing. The East High faculty, second to none in skill and in in- terest in the problems of maturing young people, has found the 2 , Q., K, f V Q QQ 5' QE -. S secret of growth in its own development as well as the secret of knowing how to transmit the inspiration that makes growth possible in students. For the many hours spent beyond the call of duty, for the per- sonal interest exhibited, for a multitude of little but not forgotten favors EXODUS says thank you. 3 i l Mr. Harold J. East High teams are gradually winning more and more respect from the various teams against which they compete. Not quite so obvious but real nevertheless is the value to the spectators who are experiencing the pleasure of backing a winning team and thereby shining in reflected glory. 43 F0 Q4 Q?-ifl'3Z5:-9532353-.ff2n1Ef:2.3f535:1g.i, 4 4-Z::gz:a,:g-'z5:5:z::31f'2:f-rgzaagzf.mg.. 1-14. The East High Blue Bombers, known as Lou Ra.lston's Giant Killers, concluded their 1958 football sched- ule as one of the finest, most exciting, and most unpredictable teams East High School ever produced. The high flying Bombers finished in the action-packed East Senate with a 4-1-1 record, in second place to powerful Cathedral Latin. Latin went on to win the city championship, making East look even better in the all-over picture. There were, however, 3 independent losses in the early part of the season while the team was still in the process of building momentum. Three of the Senate victories were important upsets in which the then underrated Bombers beat John Adams, Collinwood, and the previously unbeaten Benedictine. 44 MZ Doug Urbic - T. Basketball Team This season the East High basketball team enjoyed good success considering the stiff competition, and the youth of the squad. Opening the year with a loss to mighty East Tech, the Blue Bombers started on the win trail with an upset victory over Collinwood. As the season progressed, East won and lost with about equal consistency so Coach Gene Krakowiak decided to bring up some of the promising JV's, with the idea of building for the future . It was tough going at first, for most of the boys were green to varsity competition, but they progressed until in the post- season playoffs the Blue Bombers defeated Willoughby and then almost dumped the highly rated St. Joseph five, losing by the heart-breaking score of 66 to 65. East fans feel sure that with the entire team returning ex- cept graduating Andy Jackson, the Blue Bombers are on the way up, and with East Tech losing its four big men, who knows? 48 U 9 -,at ith, Don Hilt, George Lowe. Therefore, EXODUS is happy to devote a full 30 pages to picturing and describ- ing the various student organizations which function at East High School. This is the time no doubt to express thanks to the various 54 faculty sponsors, without whom none of these groups could operate. Even a most casual perusal of this section will show certain faces and names appearing repeatedly. These are the students who are learning more tha.n the course material in their various classes. EXODUS salutes them and says thank you to the leaders who make East High School a more pleasant school for everyone. 55 ,pd f 11.--,r,s.,gw,,U,r W 1, f:.I',gi,,1rifQsiH,, ' ,?f:s:rf-Efessepnastfgfz,,',1ttf1 ., .. fff'-gafifsw w e ' ' - Eiififisyiaii este -if , ' x,,r,,g,,,M, -- , E? sidlisilgff 5. sfsam:-w ff tw-sf,,,f.,, 2 f if fi -flu f - , Y . 4 - ' ' 4' fl p ' :A I ggi ,. - A f f 2A-, 1 A fs ifz .- , . s Y 5 9 4 , Q M wr Ji i 5 X A-A 5 git ,LAW, N , A 1 My? 1 fi is 3 X If 4 99 LM, . , rum , . 1 .., RICHARD RAHAL PRES , STEVEN BOREC KY V. ' :2f?:1:-' 'ze-wr' ffflk' The highest honor that can come to an East High student is acceptance into the National Honor Society. Membership is based on four qualities: service, character, scholarship, and leadership. The inductees are 52, of the llA class, 102, of the 12B class, and 152 of the 12A class each semester. The in- duction ceremony is always a high point in the semester, and a tea is held after school to which the new members and their parents are invited. Members are selected by a committee of the faculty in con sultation with every single faculty member. A student who is elected has been given a very minute examination of all his qualifications . Because of the EXODUS deadline, those inducted in May could not be included on these pages, a regretable but una- voidable omission.
