With great esteem and deep appreciation we leave be- hing us a picture of life and activities at East, to add another page to the memory book of our Alma Mater, 1 1? ...A i if far T.-W' Mr. Cihlar Miss Aitken Mr. Simmons Assistant Principal Assistant Principal Principal Miss Murphy Guidance Counselor Aclminisfrafion To you who are about to graduate from East High School, the faculty extends its congratulations and best wishes for success in the various careers you have chosen. Your three years here with their problems, struggles, and accomplishments will be always a source of pleasant and proud memories. At this moment memories of the past seem insig- nificant when compared to the uncertainties and challenges of the future but many years hence they will occupy an important position among your pos- sessions. We of the faculty who have dedicated much of our lives to East High and its contributions to youth will leave with a nostalgic feeling of loss and a consciousness of emptiness which only the memories of our former students can assuage. East placed fourth in the East Senate track meet. It won a first place in the 220 relay and third place in the 880 relay. In shotput Clark Kellogg placed first. In the fall of 1957 the cross country team placed third in the East Senate. Two boys finished high enough to go to the state meet, Ray Palmer and Roger Holmes. With a new coach and new team spirit East High's football team rose to a tie for second place. This came after a poor season in the previous campaign. On the way to second place they defeated several highly ranked teams. The basketball team had a poor season after several good ones. East's Blue Bombers finished in a tie for sixth place. The bowling team ended the season in third place in the city, but took first place in the roll-off. High point man was Dan Mikich. Baseball has been dropped permanently from the East High sports scene so the pictures taken in the spring of 1957 are probably the last anyone will see of an East High baseball team. No matter where the teams finished they accomplished their purpose -- to give the boys with ability in athletics a chance to use it, and to give the student body something to be proud of. 39 iii s iii ..- .Nh 'N - H ixi rg ,. - 9 V. any K... This is the nickname given the 1957 edition of the Blue Bombers by the city newspapers. Our boys earned this name by upsetting several highly ranked teams . East started the season under a new head coach, Mr. Lou Ralston. Wast ing no time in getting on the upset trail the Bombers tripped the always powerful Mansfield Tygers, who in former years have considered the East game as mere practice for the regular season. To prove this was no fluke East went on to defeat highly touted Cathedral Latin and John Adams. The Bombers also defeated Glenville and East Tech to round out the most successful season since 1946. In Senate play East dropped a close decision to Collinwood, and absorbed a beating by the Benedictine Bengals, the team ranked number one.in the state. East also lost an independent game to St. Joseph. With four victories in Senate play as against two losses East was able to finish the season tied with Cathedral Latin for second place. Credit is due Coach Ralston and his staff for injecting new spirit, and to the team for catching that spirit and starting what looks like a new era in East High football . 41 Bob Madison Co- Captain ,,p . gr-': ,,, Oral 'ig East 7 St. Joseph 12 East could not lick the St. joseph jinx as it dropped this independent contest at John Adams Field. East 7 Mansfield 6 East opened the season with an up- set victory over the Mansfield Ty- gers, the first for East in 24 years down with a pass from Larry Mentz Bob Madison kicked the extra point East 12 Collinwood 14 Bill McNair scored two touchdowns for East on long runs, one of 65 yards and the other of 55 yards. But this was not enough. The two extra points made by the Railroaders were the margin of defeat. Bob Madison and jones Davis ran for East's touchdowns. This vic- tory was very sweet, the first for East since 1929 . East 29 John Adams 14 East continued on its upset trail as it sur prised john Adams. Clark Kellogg score on a pass from Mentz. Bill McNair, Jon: Davis, Gus White and Mike Lewis ac- counted for the rest of the scoring. East 0 Benedictine 40 The powerful and experienced Bengals were too much for East as they had little trouble downing the Blue Bombers. Benedictine went on to win the city championship at the Stadium on Thanks- giving. East 27 Glenville 0 Seeking revenge for last year's shellacking, the sive offense in defeating the Tarblooders. Bob Taylor and Clark Kellogg scored on passes. Jones Davis ran for the other two touchdowns. East 26 East Tech 7 The Blue Bombers ended the 1957 season on a successful note as they downed East Tech on a muddy field. The Blue Bombers had little experience with only two returning lettermen, Robert Taylor and Bill Slacas. They also lacked suf- ficient bench strength. East lost at mid-season, by graduation, center Bill Slacas. Bill was one of the Blue Bombers' top scorers and rebounders. Also lost by mid-year graduation was guard Leo Terlep . The Blue Bombers finished the season with a record of 4 victories and 12 defeats. Top scorer for the season was senior forward, Fred Sallach. Things look brighter for next season. Each semester there are two dances, one sponsored by the student council and the other by the senior class. The climax of high school social events is the senior prom, held once a year, in the spring. Sports, which are covered in another section of Exodus, develop lead- ership and team spirit in those who participate, and a vicarious sense of achievement in those who watch. A wide range of clubs provides interest for every type of personality. A faculty sponsor guides the activities of each group. The HONAR- IES carefully screen their members. They promote high ideals and offer a taste of the finer life. PUBLICATIONS provide us with the school newspaper and the yearbook. The SERVICE organizations help the school to function smoothly. MUSIC AND DRAMATICS pre- sent our assemblies and plays, and add color to sports events. The SUBJECT clubs, sponsored by the various teaching departments, en- large on the courses while supplying a social atmosphere as well. These school- sponsored activities result in a happy, versatile stu- dent body.
