Exodus A PUBLICATION OF THE JUNE CLASS OF 1946 AT EAST HIGH SCHOOL CLEVELAND, OHIO MR. EMMET E. SMELTZ, Principal IN THE ARMED FORCES Harry Bocian Joseph Bondi Calvin Buehner Bill Burrell Herbert Clark Carl George William Glenn Harry Krause Larry Malakovic Peter Misiajlo John Popowicz Richard Reid John Sabato Joe Sankovich Anthony Santucci Anthony Schepis Rudy Standish Bob Stein Jack Sulzman Jack Waites 4 ADMINISTRATION I feel that the association of this class to the school over the last three years has been a particularly pleasant one. It is not easy to break that asso- ciation, but “time marches on.” My sincere personal regards and af- fection go with each of you. The whole faculty, as well as I, wishes you good luck and God-speed. Emmet E. Smeltz Principal Congratulations are due you for having placed your class high on the list of fine classes graduated from East High School. Congratulations are due you for having within your own group enough potentiality and idealism to be a vita! part of this One World — if you will it. Grace A. Martin Assistant Principal As you scatter through this community and other sections of our country, it is my hope that pleasant memories of East will make you conscious of a desire to live useful lives. You are for- tunate in having many very fine people in your class. For this reason, I am confident that we will continue to feel proud of you as you move along to the future work and other activities you will experience. J. J. A winning smile and a pleasing personality go together to make up one of the most popular boys in the senior class. Truly, Ken Lehmann retains his high standards in the memories of both his teacher? and his fellow stu- dents. Ken ran for top office in the Student Council twice and for presi- dent of his class in the 12B. Besides holding down several extra-curricular activities, Kenny also has made a memorable scholastic record during his three years at East High, “Hatchy This fun-loving, versatile class of- ficer is a participant in many extra- curricular activities at East. In the senior revue she was one of a group of girls who sang “Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief, and in the 12A mixer she sang “I’m Only a Square in a So- cial Circle. Undoubtedly Alice is one of the leading girls of the senior class. “Hatchy is no relative of Sergeant-at-Arms Jack, though many have thought she was. Donald Petrick has proved once more to hi? classmates, as in semes- ters before, that any job he under- takes is a job well done. Don has really established quite a record scholastically while here at East, ranking very high in his class. JACK “HATCH HACHERIAN 1771 East 31 Street (14) Treas. 12B Class, Sgt.-at-Arms 12A Class, Chairman Exodus Com- mittee, Hall Guard, Advanced Band H.R. Sports, Band Jamboree Hatch One of the most active members of the graduating class is likable Jack Hacherian. Always taking part in class committees and a class officer for two semesters he is definitely a leader. A ready smile and a hello for everyone he meets in the hail make this curlv-haired senior a popular fel- low at East. 7 CLASS COMMITTEES EXODUS: EDITORIAL PROM Jack Hacherian, Chairman Mary Markos Tom Johnston Clare Robertson Guido Rothrauff Nona Cavell Ken Lehmann Ruth Stanton Alex Kanareff Ritta Gallagher Lee Roberts Paul Byers, Co-chairman Florence Ponikvar Marcia Orr Jean Brasch Lillian Swaddell Agnes Lesar Katherine Katsis Jack Martin R[chard Murray Jack Cullen EXODUS: FINANCIAL MIXER Dgnald Petrick Mary Osborn Virginia Magri Jack Martin Eileen Shaveyco Eleanor Jasinski Rosemary Cittidino Gertrude Pizem Evelyn Rebich, Chairman Dorothy Horvath Eleanor Fulton Todd Hamilton Jerry Hottois Cy Bartlett Danny Ragone Lillian Fahndrich Pat Connelly Pearl Guddy SENIOR REVUE Jack Cullen, Ray Kacperski Florence Ponikvar Evelyn Rebich Nona Cavell Robert DeMarco Evelyn Baran Sabby Fatica Rita Barnes Ray Grauberger James Moore Chairman Lee Roberts Ruth Stanton Alice Hacherian Shirley Diehl Anne Gudal Mary Markos Paul Byers Eileen Shaveyco Madge Testa Ken Lehmann 8 PATRICIA “PAT ADOLPHSON 1334 East 114 Street (6) Swimming Meet RICHARD AGNES 1540 East 85 Street (6) Hall Guard, Chess Club, March- ing Band, Concert Band, Wres- tling Club LOIS “PAT ALDRICH 1301 East Boulevard (6) Senior Revue ANNA “LITTLE GIRL” AMBROSE 91 1 Addison Road (3) AGNES “ANN” ANDRAS 12626 Brackland Avenue (8) PATRICIA “PAT” ARUNSKI 957 Maud Avenue (3) Choral Club SHIRLEY “LEE” AUSTIN 1834 East 81 Street (3) Girls’ Glee Club, Whirlo JUNE BACH 1097 East 74 Street (3) Commercial Club, Girls’ Glee Club FRANCES “FANNY” BALAT 7820 Linwood Avenue (3) H. LOOKINC BACK In the far-off future we of the senior class of— let’s see, what year did we graduate in? — oh, yes, back in ’46, will take time to remember our old Alma Mater. We’ll remember how timid and uncertain we felt as we saw our first flag raising on that eventful morning. Memories will come flooding back with thoughts of Monday-morning chemistry tests, the Harvest Frolic, those nerve-wracking National Honor inductions, club picnics in the spring, “The Riverboat Follies” with the Andrews Sisters, and how the faculty “wowed ’em at the “Night of Stars.” Still in the back of our minds are the pleasant memories of those Shaw games, our football queen, athletic rallies, basketball games and those foot- ball thrills and disappointments. What were those affairs we had in the gym? Oh, yes—mixers! And then those student council elections. And remember that cafeteria lunch line, and the lost sleep we made up in study halls and tenth period deten- tions? The “ninnies in senior gym (we could never forget that). Remem- ber, too, how the loose plaster in our Aud. made us the school “with the fringe on top ? We were “big shots when we took over the auditorium for our homeroom. Our prom recalls many more pleasant memories. Yes, there is a lot to remember, for we had good times during those busy years at East. 37 FOOTBALL Back row: Frank B. After two months of hard luck and bad breaks, East’s football squad won its only game of the season against John Adams on November 7 by a score of 13-12. The victory earned a sixth place in the East Side Senate and closed a season in which Coach Conly did his best with many unseasoned boys. Under the arc lights the Bombers dropped their 1945 opener to Shaw’s strong Cardinals, 6-26. Mansfield’s Tygers were out of East’s class, but the Bombers gave Mansfield a stiff fight on its own field and, until the half, held a 7-0 lead. After several fine goal-line stands, plus some tough breaks, East fell, 7-18. After losing to Collinwood and, surprisingly, to Central, the Deckerites tangled with Youngstown East at Youngstown. Here the Bombers fought bitterly to preserve a 6-6 tie, but a power drive in the last quarter gave the downstaters a 12-6 edge. The boys dropped games to Cathedral Latin and Benedictine and then finally upset Adams in the finals. Four seniors closed their school grid careers in the Adams contest — Paul Byers, Alex Kanareff, Jim Moore, and Rileigh Coleman. Alex, inciden- tally, was the leading letter winner of-the class, with two letters each in football and track. 1945 SEASON 6 ...... Shaw 26 6 .. . Youngstown East ... 12 7 .... Mansfield 18 2 . . . Three years ago basketball teams at East suffered fourteen straight de- feats. Two years ago the Bombers won six contests while dropping seven. Last year the Blue Bombers roared through a difficult schedule, racking up seven victories and losing only five times: Led by Captain Carl Taseff, the Deckerites rolled to early-season vic- tories over Rhodes and Euclid Central. After losing to South, 44-46, the Conlymen really got going, and very early in January the Blue and Cold quin- tet soundly trounced East Tech, 38-25. The Bombers bounced back from a defeat by Col I inwood to smash Uni- versity School and then crushed Central’s Trojans. After losing to Cathedral Latin and Benedictine, the Bombers smashed John Hay before dropping one to John Adams, 32-36. Saving the last for the best, the Bombers whipped Glenville’s Tarblood- ers, 47-42. The Blue and Cold five took an early lead over the strong Tar- blooders and held it throughout the contest. Kei Oshiro was the only graduating member of the Bomber five. Kei, who had some basketball in Wyoming, quickly became a member of the Bombers' scoring machine. 1 945-’46 SEASON 36 ... 30 47 .... . . .. I felt pretty nervous the first day when I went into the auditorium, but when I saw the other members of my class, I felt a lot easier. I recognized quite a few of them from junior high, and when the home- room listings were read, I sure was glad I’d be with some of the girls I’d known before. We were late for classes our first week be- cause it seems we always went to the wrong end of the building, but some of the greenness wore off after the first issue of the Blue and Cold. We felt pretty good seeing the names of members of our class in print for the 1 OB feature. We were also informed that over one-third of the total enrollment of the school, 498 to be exact, was our class. Things flew pretty fast then. Cleveland changed to War time, which gave us an hour more of daylight for our school work and ex- tra-curricular activities. We helped the wom- en in the Ration Board to issue War Ration Book No. 4, and, oh yes, we had Cues for You every Wednesday in homeroom. We had three boys on the tenth grade grid squad: Alex Kanareff, Paul Byers, and Harry Krause. Two of our girls made the sports page, too, for being top bowlers in the newly organized bowling club — Anne Cudal and Phyllis Schadt. Then 1 OB Recognition came along, and we got our first inkling of the ‘brains’ of our class and of those who went out for sports and extra-curricular activities in a big way. Honor Roll and Merit Roll students were rec- ognized, along with those who had perfect at- tendance. Those who came first in the vary- ing subject fields and in sports were Ruth Stanton, Fred DeMinico, Lee Roberts, Clare Robertson, Jack Martin, Bob DeMarco, Mar- garet Ohman, Guido Rothrauff, Jack Cullen, Mike Bogas, Hilda Roth, Evelyn Rebich, Ev- elyn Baran, Anne Cudal, Norbert Mang, Har- ry Swartz, Sabbv Fatica, Ken Lehmann, Elsie Cross, Dorothy Zajac, Shirley Taylor, Darleen Bonnay, Mary Sajatovic, Martha Moore, Betty Blake, Todd Hamilton, Alex Kanareff, and Jim Conroy. At the 1 OB Mixer everybody got ac- quainted in the games that were arranged for that purpose, and we left feeling more a part of East than ever. Then report cards fin- ished our first semester at the school on Decker. It was in the 1 OA that we first heard of the yearly booklet, Horizons, that gives the more literary members of the class a chance to show their talents. Our 1 OA had a very nice representation in it with Doris Duricky, Guido Rothrauff, Lois McLeod, Frances Balat, Phyl- lis Schadt, and Clare Robertson. It was the spring of the year, then, and two of our young men lightly turned to thoughts of track. They were Bob DeMarco and Mike Chariillo. At the same time the city-wide school music contest was entered by Martha Moore, Betty Blake, Todd Hamilton, and Shir- ley Taylor. Student councilors were trying energetical- ly to have their homerooms purchase bonds, bonds, and more bonds for the P-51 Mustang that was going to be sent overseas and would be called the Spirit of East High. We real- ly felt that we d finished off the year in style when Sophie Poulos from our class put the drive over the top with her $5,000 purchase. It helped our morale, too, to know that we had more pupils on the Honor Roll in our class than any other class could boast. September '44 - June ’45 Dear Diary: We are now juniors in high school, and we just met our new assistant principal, Mr. J. J. Stillinger. The auditorium still has the fringe on top. but we’re a little more used to it this year. The Inter-racial Club was just started, and everybody is joining more clubs than ever. Paul Byers was featured on the sports page this year for his football prowess, and other members of the team were Harry Krause, Alex Kanareff, and Jim Moore. When the girls ran for the enviable position of football queen this year, Florence Ponikvar was a close runner-up. Then, later on in the semester, both Agnes Lesar and Pauline Cigetich were burned out of their houses because of the East Ohio Gas Company disaster. Quite a few in our class helped other disaster victims by working with them at Willson junior high-school. Once more our student councilors were concocting various schemes to make us buy bonds and stamps, this time with the goal of a jeep for every homeroom. Out of the elev- en rooms in the school, six were 1 1 B home- rooms, which put our class on top once more. Prizes for Horizons contributions for next semester’s publications were awarded to Ray Crauberger, Bernice Johnson, Ruth Stanton, and Donald Petrick. School was a pretty hard grind now, but we 40 Dear Diary (cont.) were far from ready to give up, especially with our new Majorettes' club to pep us up. Two of our girls who were going to be future baton twirlers were Mary Markos and Shirley Diehl. With the start of the 1 1A semester, bas- ketball became the major sport once more, and Paul Byers was made a member of the first team. This was the season that Guido Rothrauff wrote his “Bench Warming col- umn for the sports page of the B. and G. About this time, vocal contests were held, on Friday the thirteenth of all days, and the contestants were Dorothea Kuth, Shirley Tay- lor. Guido Rothrauff, Paul Newman, and Cal- vin Kopp. The spring play, “Ever Since Eve, featured Mike Bogas and Guido from our ranks this year. It was this semester, too, that the tax stamo drive for a post-war memorial plaque was launched. Post-war seemed to mean a little more to us all this year than it had for a long time. Track stars Paul Newman and Mike Char- lillo came to the fore again in the 880-yard relay. Alex Kanareff also entered the field in the shot-put. Paul ended up as a state fi- nalist in the broad jump. The semester went along with fluoroscope tests for everyone, and for the girls there was the information on retail selling courses giv- en. V-E Day was announced also, and the school saw a beautiful program given in the auditorium. Horizons welcomed more writers to the ranks in the persons of Charlotte Trumbull, George Jouriles, Eileen Shavevco, and Marga- ret Kelly. Ruth Stanton, a repeater in this field, received special recognition for her work. With every senior tense in his seat, the names of the new National Honor Society members were announced. They are Lee Rob- erts, Ruth Stanton, Clare Robertson, Aloma Saltzmann, Guido Rothrauff, Donald Petrick, Eileen Shaveyco, Virginia Magri, Rose Yanich, Richard Murray, Mary Osborn, Evelyn Rebich, Betty Blake, Nona Cavell, Betty Quirk, and Bob DeMarco. We all heard Paul Newman sing the solo in “Ballad for Americans” this year, and it was generally decided tha't he was going to be in our senior revue. We surely were looking ahead. The art department also was repre- sented by our class when Marcia Orr received honors for her work in ceramics. This was a busy year, and I rather felt that everyone had had his nose to the grindstone, but we came through once more with flying colors. Spring is in the air, dear diary, so I think I’ll start to enjoy vacation. September '45 June '46 Dear Diary: It doesn’t seem very long ago when, in the course of events, I started to high-school, and here I am graduating already. I really feel, though, that has been a wonderful last year to look back on. All of us came back to school feeling won- derful because the war was finally over and V-J Day had been declared. There were some changes to come back to, too, for Mr. Gudi- kunst, homeroom teacher for one of our groups, had left, and Miss Collings took his place. Class officers for our 12B class were Bob “Legs DeMarco, president; Jack Martin, vice-president; Evelyn Rebich, secretary; Jack Hacherian, treasurer, and Sabby Fatica, ser- geant-at-arms. We all felt ready to do things now, so.........we did. Two of our “old-timers went in for foot- ball again this year, Alex Kanareff and Paul Byers, but they were supplemented this time bv two newcomers, George Jouriles and Ril- eigh Coleman. This was my last time to see the team in action, and I really enjoyed the games—especially the Latin game, when Katherine Katsis was crowned football queen. Mary Osborn was one of her maids of honor, and they were very good-looking representa- tives of our class. Chesshire's Studio was chosen as the offi- cial class photographer, and we all trouped up to the fourth-floor canteen for our sittings. It was about December for most of us when we called for our pictures. They look swell, now, but they'll probably be laughed at in about twenty years. It was about this time that the Ration Board left, too, and it brought home even more to most of us that we were living in a peace-time world. No more of the phrase, “for the duration. We had a nice time at our 1 2B Mixer, too, when most of us decided unanimously that Evelyn Rebich was the class songbird after hearing her rendition of “Honey.” Todd Hamilton and Jerry Hottois played a clarinet duet, and Mary Sajatovic and Minerva Lavdas gave us boogie on the piano. None of us who went will ever forget the “Harvest Frolic dance that was sponsored by all the school clubs. It was something new at East, and one of the most popular affairs ever held here. The Student Council was every- 41 Dear Diary (cont.) where at once this semester, too, with Alex Kanaretf as top man. National Honor inductees for this semester were Jeanne Brasch, Mery Chandler, Frances Colabrese, Gloria Del Nero, Gerald Hottois, Carolyn Hubbard, Tom Johnston, Agnes Lesar, Rita May,' Joe O’Bannon, Margaret Ohman, Florence Ponikvar, Tom Sashihara, Lillian Swaddell, Madeline Testa, and Nada Zagar. Oh, happy day! The biggest bouquet of our three years at East was awarded to Ruth Stanton, who be- came Mantle Orator, the highest honor the school can give a girl. Finally, our last semester began with the thrill of having our homeroom periods held in the auditorium. Once more I noticed what a large class we had with two girls’ homerooms having to meet in the balcony. Our officiat- ing members were Bob DeMarco once more for president, Ken Lehmann, vice-president; Alice Hacherian, secretary; Don Petrick, trea- surer, and Jack Hacherian, sergeant-at-arms. An innovation for the members of the school who love to dance was the noon can- teen, commonly called The Hangar.” This year also was the 30th anniversary of our school paper, the Blue and Gold. A newcomer to our class, Kei Oshiro, was an addition also to the basketball team, the only 12A eager. However, the track team boasted six of our class in Paul Newman, Mike Chari i I lo. Jack Martin, Jim Moore, Alex Kanareff, and Ray Prock. Mike met with an accident near the beginning of the season, however, and his misfortune was also a dis- appointment for the team. One of the newer clubs at East, the Future Teachers’ club, was headed by three members of our class—Ruth Stanton, president; Caro- lyn Hubbard, vice-president, and Virginia Magri, secretary. Culture isn’t neglected in our class, either, for Martha Moore plays second violin in the Women’s Symphony Orchestra of Cleveland and first violin in East’s own orchestra. We have 38 boys and girls in the Choral Club, and music was also a feature in River Boat Follies, our senior revue. I can also say, with pardonable pride, that I believe it is the best senior revue I have ever seen. Who can every forget Paul Byers’ Chloe, and the honeyed harmonizing of t h e Andrews Sis- ters ? Our class drew in more money for this entertainment than had any other previous class. Uniforms for the band topped the list of needs for the day, and so members of our class contributed their talent for a Night of Stars,” with all proceeds going to the band. When will we ever forget the faculty’s per- formance that night? Our tax stamp drive this year has held for its feature the band uni- forms. Our classbook committee started to work on the 48-page book, Exodus, for all members of the senior class. This wasn’t the only com- mittee that was slaving, for the Prom group was now deciding to have the class dance at the Rainbow Room of the Carter Hotel on May 31. Our commencement script commit- tee, too, was starting out to write a pageant- like performance for our commencement. Over half of us attended the 1 2A Mixer to have a good time and, incidentally, latch on to some of the ice cream and cake that was going around. Work and studies weren't neglected, either, and it took quite a few nightmares before we could look back sensi- bly on the O. S. U. tests given to all seniors. What a morning that was! Best Foot Forward,” the annual play of the year, had six members of our class in it. There were Jack Cullen, Ruth Stanton, Rita Gal- lagher, Betty Blake, Gloria Del Nero, and An- drew Cairis. Oh, yes, the Athenaeum girls were roaming the halls now, looking for someone to ask to their yearly dance given in co-operation with the Laurean Literary Society. They had com- pany a few weeks later as the boys looked around for prom dates, and social life was really on the whirl. But since everything comes to an end, no matter how sweet, high-school is over, and this will be the last time we’ll see many of the members of our class again. But I’m sure, Dear Diary, we’ll all go on to something fine, for it is we who are going to build the fu- ture,” and East high-school has given us the building tools.
