In this, our annual, We of the staff Wish to give you not only an idea of student life in a typical American high school but also to remind you by means of its timely theme that there is need for a strong feeling of patriotism in America today. -if Page Two E4- It Is Our Idea . To dedicate this, the l94l Ianus, we, in keeping with our theme, are especially thinking of our teachers, the ones who gave us our first glimpse into love of country felt by a democratic people. By their instruction and guidance We became true patriots, filled with appreciation of this, our America, and those long-suffering pioneers who made it. As a symbol of this superb body, our teachers, We have chosen one We think worthy of the representation. To Miss Mabel Christy, devotee to work with youth, we dedicate our annual. -'tif Page Three lif- There She Stands In A11 Her Glory . ' .... We hope your accomplishments thus far are but an earnest of what you will do in the future. So much needs to be done and the way is so confusing that your task will require the best that is in you. But we have faith in you, and know you will respond nobly to any call that our American ideals may force upon you. Our blessing goes with you. May you always have the pleasure and satisfaction of reviewing a record Whose only flaws are stepping stones to nobler and higher achievement. -I. W. SMITH, Principal E. E. FELL, Assistant Principal. On December 6, 1940, nineteen members of the Ianuary class were initiated into the National Honor Society. Scholarship, leadership, character, and service were the characteristics stressed in the search for new members. Those selected as most nearly meeting all the requirements Were: Florence Iones, Kimrney Vouros, Nick Leonelli, Ioe Groh, Martha Sebastian, Nathan Laskin, Grace Dixon, Antonette Bebackwa, Lucille Bish, Reginald Sanders. Thomas Davis, Eileen Shafer, Angeline Amodio, Thomas Corroto, Dolores Henry, 'Talmadge lackson, Ruth Clarkson, Helen Muntean and Lena Vetromile. The National Honor Banquet was held December 19, 1940, at the audi- torium of the Y. M. C. A. -if Page Eleven l-34' Grease Paint, Footlights, First Nighters . . Wrecked fenders, jitterbugging in stocking feet, allergies, broken records, and what have you, were all ingredients of the senior play Cross My Heart, presented by the Ianuary Class of 1941. The three-act comedy, directed by A. I. Whitaker, centered around the adolescent shyness of an Eleanor Ross and a Bob Adams. The accidental meeting of the two brought about complications, which their friends tried to simplify, but really only helped to make worse. All this proved the play an A-l comedy and continually swept the audience with gales of laughter until the final curtain. Eleanor Ross and Bob Adams were ably portrayed by Antoinette Arcaro and Thomas Corroto. Ioseph Groh enacted the role of shy Charlie Westover, lover of Pauline Adams, played by Lucille Bernard. Iitterbugging Carl Young and Henrietta Duval were excellently played by Eddie Rashid and Mildred Watkins. Angeline Amodio as Bess Adams, Ray Dota as Dave Adams, Edith Maffei as Patsy Iones, Marian Everett as the gossiping Lola Pomeroy, Dolores Henry as Myrtle Ross, Eddie Lickner as Iim Ross, and Nick Leonelli as Ierome Ross, contributed greatly to the success of the play. if Page Twelve lik- Compilationt of Our Deeds . . The early morning sun usually found the band on the football field, behind the school, practicing, practicing, practicing. Further proof of the saying Practice makes perfect. The band added several new instruments to its collection, and kept up With the times by learning the latest swing steps. These steps will be shown on the gridiron next fall. Junior Boys' Glee Club The Ir. Boys' Glee Club is a preparatory group, preparing themselves for the Sr. Boys' Glee Club. ln this club the younger boys cultivate. their voices and learn fundamentals in music which they will have to master in order to be admitted into the advanced Glee Club. This group of boys, combined with the lr. Girls' Glee Club, which is also a preparatory group, sang for the Christmas program at the school and for a program at the Pearl Street Mission. We give encouragement to these younger boys, the boys who now and in years to come will bring us happiness with their music. -'tif Page Fifty-three l-3+ Student Council The first actively functioning Student Council of East High School came into being in Ianuary, 1940. Like the Senate, the Student Council is the upper house of the Student Council-Assembly. This body, with Miss Ethel Smith and Mr. Higgs as advisors, and ,foe Hosa as president, has been entrusted with considerable responsibility. The Council has charge of the monitor service, it has conducted several sales tax stamp campaigns: and it has charge of the noon movies, one of the newest features of the school. The council has selected a crest which shall be on the official East High School rings after 1941. foe Hosa, presidentg Iohn Bucur, vicespresidentg and Agnes Koleda, secretary, are the officers. With student participation in school government, East High becomes an example of democratic theories in practice. Student Assembly The student government at East has entered its second active year of functioning. The accomplishments of the group have been possible because all students have cooperated with this body. The lower house of the student government is the Assembly In this group originates all the legislation of the student government, for it is here that every home room has its own representative. Mr. Higgs and Miss Ethel Smith are the advisors. Officers are: president, Harry Meshelp vice president, William Haggerty: sec'y-treasurer, Iune Monnen. Debating Club The Debate Club of 1940-41 has completed another season of parties, tournaments, and other activities that have made the year seem altogether too short. Besides regular sessions, the East debaters were invited to discuss the debate question: Resolved that the power of the Federal Government should be increased, before many outside groups, such as, The Quota Club, The Iunior Clio, and Parent-Teacher Associations. lncidentally, excellent dinners often accompanied the speeches. Letters received by Mr. Morris from these various organizations, who heard the East High debaters, spoke enthusias- tically of their ability. ' Members of the regular varsity squad were: Iohn. During the holiday season, they added beauty to the Christmas pantomine with their lovely carols at the program presented for parents and students .... These girls are selected to this club for the ability and interest which they have shown in music. The insignia of the club is in the form of a treble clef, for which the club was named. One of the facts which show that this group is ambitious is that they meet each Friday morning promptly at 7:45 in the music room ZOUA. The club has had many successful social affairs, among which was a public dance held at Sacred Heart Auditorium. Either mature speakers or the members themselves give short talks on problems facing high school girls. Then follow games, singing, refreshments, and other entertainment. At Christmas time the girls relived childhood experiences, dressing little dolls to be given away. An All-City G. R. tea was held and the dolls were displayed with those from the other schools. The team's record last fall clearly illustrates how well they performed these duties, as the Blue-Gold Won their second straight City Championship. E. R. is described best perhaps by two words, tireless andvefficient. He fills the manydutied position of faculty manager superbly. His outstanding work last fall was the booking of a football game with Washington High School of Massillon, Ohio, national scholastic champions, at Bayen Stadium.
