CLASS HISTORY By Ann Mas tie. Historian January 1938 WHEN the fire is over it is pleasant to feel the afterglow. The fire of our three years at East High is over and this is our afterglow. Let us go back to the beginning of the fire. It was only three short years ago, when a bewildered group of some 150 junior high graduates assembled in East High’s auditorium. It is not hard to visualize that scene because first impressions do stay with one. There we were—all with our banners of Will- son, Addison, Empire, etc. All of us were chatting away. Let’s listen to some of the conversation at that first meeting. One says, “My, I’ll bet that teacher is mean—” The other one replies, “Oh, no, the other one looks worse—” “My, there's one of those snooty 12A’s. Don’t you wish you were a 12A?” Each one had his own opinion. Then we came into the school and joined the school life and found out that one teacher was not mean but a true friend and another was an all-round fel- low. We even began to like those impressive 12A’s. But it wasn’t always fun. There was work, too. Who will ever forget the geometry headaches or those French tests? Finally we received our first high school report card. Well, then, some of us passed and some of us didn't. Those of us who did marched triumphantly into the 10A year with banners flying. Now we could lord it over the lOB's. The geometry headaches still continued, but everything must end and so did our 10A term. We found ourselves as 1 IB s. My, we were beginning to feel a little old already. But now everyone started in earnest to concentrate on electives. Our 1 IB term ended and we were 11 A’s. Then time began to fly. Changes were made. Mr. Findley and Mr. Ritchie left us and Mr. Simmons and Mr. Owens took their places. We welcomed the new members to the faculty just as we had been welcomed to the student body a year and a half ago. In our 11A year a worthy project was started, that of getting our band new uniforms, which was ably managed by Mr. Varner. In our 1 2B year our class was organized with Miss Birkner as our adviser. Elizabeth Smith was chosen as mantle orator. The officers of the class were President, William McMaster; Vice President, Martha Severovic; Secretary, Ruth Bowen; Treasurer, John Slauta, and Sergeant-at-Arms, Ben Nicolosi. Ounring committee was organized with Alvern Diederich as chairman. We had some fine rnixersfin the 12B. Our thanks to the chairmen and Mr. Mid- dagh for their success. It was in the 12B that we took that never-to-be-for- gotten physiology in which we all should have received one hundred per cent. In May of our 12B year the band uniforms were purchased and proudly dis- played at a concert. All too soon it was our turn to take the place at the head of our school. The 1 2A’s left lingeringly and we proudly took their places. Again we elected as President, William McMaster; Vice President, Alvern Diederich; Secretary, Betty McCurdy; Treasurer, John Slauta, and Sergeant-at-Arms, Ben Nicolosi. Our 12A term was an eventful one. We had two roaring good mixers; one headed by Eugene Mihelic, and the other by Tondra Border. We also witnessed a very successful football season, culminating in the big game at the stadium between East and John Adams. We had a very good time at our 12A circus, which the whole class helped put across with Elizabeth Smith, chairman, and Claude Pitman, ringmaster. We had our moments, too, with economics, chemistry, botany, and others. But now our fire is slowly dying, which means that we must leave. Al- though only a few glowing embers remain materially, we know that we will always feel an inner fire which comes from the contacts we made, the little sadness and the deal of happiness we experienced at East. Our one hope is that perhaps we have left a little spark to warm the hearts of those left behind.
