Girls participate in various sports that are divided seasonally into four nine-week periods. Sports day, held every fall, winter, and spring, gives the girls an opportunity to join girls from all six Wichita high schools in a day of fellow- ship and vigorous activity. Approximately 200 girls participate in the after school sport's program sponsored by the department. The boys' program is divided into three 12 week periods and is directed by ten instructors. Intramurals and competitive sports after school create activities for leisure time and develop the skills taught during class. , ,. Homemdking- Acquiring Needed Skills for Home, Career Today's homemaker must not only prepare food, mend clothing, and care for children, but she also has a growing responsibility in managing the home budget, in making the home not only comfortable, but also attractive, and in being a social credit to her family. Girls in the home economics department gain knowledge to help them in their dual careers. Members of the cooking classes actually buy and prepare foods. Sewing students design and sew their own creations, then display them to the student body in their annual style show. Courses in home economics, child development, home and family living, and interior decorating are offered to meet the additional needs of girls. Classes in homemaking might also be de- scribed as training for careers unlimited. Interior decorating, and teaching are two of the many careers open to girls with home eco- nomics backgrounds. This department strives to prepare girls for their roles in the home and business world. 27
