ARISTOTLFRS REPUBLIC, the War of 1812, and current happenings in Berlin are a few of the topics discussed by the 2101 Aces enrolled in the social studies department at East High School. To pro- mote a better understanding and knowl- edge of social systems, history, and govern- ment, the 13 social studies teachers offer eight educational courses to Aces. With the help of the American Observer Newspaper, juniors become acquainted with the past and present events in Amer- ican history. In government classes seniors are taught basic political theory and the workings of government on the local, state, and national level. Supplementing the state-required courses of American history and government are classes in sociology, psychology, world history, and world geog- TRYING TO DISCOVER THE REAL HIM, Ron Kirk- patrick, '64-, studies a Rorshach inkblot test used by psycholo- raphy. TANGO MUSIC can be heard in typ- ing classes during the time tests more fre- quently than in modem dance classes. The use of music teaches students to type rhyth- mically and more efliciently. The 10 in- structors who comprise the business de- partment staff strive to train Aces for high degrees of skill in typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping. These skills form a general business education which enables students to carry on their daily business activities with more ease. Classes in secretarial training and cler- ical practice prepare career-minded Aces to hold jobs in the business world after graduation. AS THE odor of hydrogen sulfide, more commonly recognized as rotten eggs, floats down the halls of East High School, the student body is again reminded of the presence of the science department. Through working in the laboratories and greenhouse, the 1302 students enrolled in science courses become familiar with the methods of science. Ten members of the science department teaching staff strive to teach Aces what science is and how it benefits humanity, while keeping them up to date with the latest scientific advances. Members of the new semi-micro chemistry class use smaller scaled equipment in order to lessen, the danger and working time of experiments. With the addition of the Chem Study Method, based on more quantitive lab work in chemistry, East has introduced one of the newest teaching procedures in the scientific field. Through the experience and knowledge gained at East, science- minded Aces will be well prepared for the major role science plays in today's world.
