Centennial '61 Gazing ov e r a small pond at Wichita High School East stands a bronze pioneer with an Indian companion kneeling at his side, a me mo rial to a Kansas pioneer--J. Hudson McKnight. On this land wars were fought and lives were given so that a state might someday be formed. That dream came true in 1861, and the name of that state is Kansas. In the ce nt e r of Kansas a town grew up and in this town called Wichita, East High School, in its 37 wonderful years, has become important to the community. East has had an av- erage enrollment of 3, 000 for the past five years and has one of the largest high school ca mpu se s in the United States, covering 66 acres and boasting 10 buildings. Not only is East big in size, but in educational opportuni- ties. In comparison with the limited schooling ,of a century ago, today's student at East taking four subjects ayear could Spend 30 years without duplicatingany course. Since the time Wichita High School added East to its name, 21, 113 sen- iors, 855 in '61, have become proud alumni of one of the fi- nest high schools in the state of Kansas. Many changes have been made here since 1861, hut the rustic statue overlooking the pond between Roosevelt Inter- mediate and East High stands as a touching reminder of those brave men who p i one e re d for the statehood of this land. In this centennial year of 1961, this bookand its recorded events are dedicated to the great State of Kansas . 4
