This how- ever didn't stop the pigskin men from giving the North High Team their almost Annual defeat. This has been our Sixth straight year to have the DeMolay Trophy in our showcase. By defeating the Red- skins the Aces clinched the Ark Valley for the second straight year. Russ Shogren, veteran center and this year's captain, copped top honors on the Ark Valley and State Teams and then was placed on the second All American Team of the country. Tumbling The Tumbling Team under Coach Roberts did more this year than they achieved last, participating in 12 exhibitions . . . Letter- ing was made stiffer this year as the boys had to make at least a grade of 80 on the tests given at the end of the season and par- ticipate in three-fourths of the shows. Golf The Clubmen returning from last year are few and the lettermen are fewer being only Johnson and Terrill. This however should not stop the team from turning in a fine season under the able direction of Sumner Roberts. Tennis UPPER PICTURE Mayo's Netmen are hin- dered this year with only two returning lettermen- Talbott and Worthington. They should be able, how- ever, to pull through the season and fare Well. Last year the team took third in the Ark Valley doubles. BasehaH LOWER PICTURE The prospect this year is none too bright with only five returning lettermen. But with men like Steen, Brier, Palm, Hinman, and Ptaux the Diamond Men are expected to pull through fine defending the City Championship and the Ark Valley Championship. This year's baseball program also includes an intra- mural program which will take care of over 100 boys. Track The Cindermen under Fritz Snodgrass have turned in grand perform- ances through the past years rolling up 18 con- secutive victories previous to this season's fine rec- ords. This year the Track- men started out a grand season by defeating North 108 to 49 points. Returning Lettermen are: Mayo, Jernigan, Pool, Keif, Pe- ters, Johnson, Armstrong, Cummings, Shogren, Gale, Aldrich, Bob Johnson and Parks. Lettermen's Uluh The Lettermens Club is composed of boys who have earned athletic letters. The purpose of the club is to correlate scholarships and athletics, to promote good sportsmanship and to help promote East's highest ideals . . . Activities this year included three banquets at the ends of the three sports seasons, at which the new lettermen received their letters. The Club sponsored a dance which was open to the whole school and sold season and game tickets for football and basketball games. In these meetings a subject pertain- ing to photography is discussed or a slide demonstration is given. Occasionally a movie is shown. Always the hour is spent in learning something more of the hobby that all those attending enjoy. The highlight of the year came when the prize Winning exhibit of the 1947 Eastman National Photographic Awards contest was secured for exhibition in the Health Room. Chess Club CHESS THROUGH THE AGES In the fall of 1946 Joe Manello and Mr. Yeoman decided that East High School could and should have a chess club. Joe found that there were enough interested students to make it a success, and the club was organized with Joe Manello the first president. A constitution was drawn up providing for the election of a chairman or president each semester. The fifteen members who comprised the club elected Howard Lydick president the next semester and he was suc- ceeded by Hollis Lefever who has held office throughout this school year of 1947-48. The club has grown to 25 paid members and we hope this will be doubled next year which will be the club's third year. An attempt is made to bring to the club programs of special interest such as speakers, films, plays, and discussion groups along business lines. The social aspect of student life is also brought out in the parties that the club plans and a few meet- ings of purely social nature such as spelling bees and talent programs. Meetings are held each Wednesday morning, and anyone who is taking or has taken business sub- jects is eligible to belong to the club.
