They all wanted to win, but at times the concentration just wasn't there. They got behind at the beginning of the game and couldn't get it back together enough to win the competition. One of the many problems the team had this year was that not enough girls came out for the sport. We had this year a completely new team, except for Jean-inc McCormick who is a second year player, and everyone knows you can't make a varsity team out of first year players, but they got together and worked hard. We would like to thank the volleyball players this year for participating and working hard. We would also like to encourage other girls in the student body to come out next year for volleyball. You will find it is a very rewarding experience anyone that plays can assure you of that. So come on out next year. Written By: Carol Wilburn 13 1988 Uardity ootbalf TJliode lighting i2i lean 1. Our coaching staff has worked hard to put pride, discipline, and a competitive spirit back into our team program, and this year will prove that hard work pays in many ways. Besides more league champions, we also should have more state qualifiers, this season. Without the support of the “East Bear Family” it would have been a hard road to travel. Thank-you all. There you arc standing at your locker, and all of a sudden the tardy bell rings. The P.A. system comes on filling the halls with a loud, deafening statement, “This is a Hall Freeze . You slam your locker door and run to your class. On arrival to your favorite class, you see your teacher pointing in the opposite direction. For instance, one student - Jon Kitchen-, who was surveyed has experienced lots of these freezes. He states that “HALL FREEZES arc fun because it is a wonderful experience of beating the bell before it rings. Another student, Andrew Urban, says that hall freezes doesn't mean anything to him because he is always getting caught in them. You return from your suspension, and you're at your locker repeating the same day routine, collecting your books out of your locker and you take one step backwards and before you know it... THIS IS A HALL FREEZE. I REPEAT. THIS IS A HALL FREEZE, ALL FREEZEES REPORT TO . .. One student, Lanisc Livingston, who has never been caught in a hall freeze says they're important because maybe it will make a person realize how important getting to class on time can really mean. But whatever the reason, hall freezes do exist. This is a terrific program that has had a big impact on promoting students’ staying in school, achieving goals, and having a high self image. Nick Lowery is our school year representative. Nick visits our school approximately 6 times a year and gives the sophomore classes pep talks on public speaking, college plans, and goal setting. The Kansas City Chiefs make it possible for 40 students, nominated by their teachers, to go to the Arrowhead Stadium, to talk, to tour the Stadium, and to talk to other football stars. The program provides tickets and transportation from the school to the stadium for the students to see a homegame. “It is an honor to be a part of the Chiefs’ Corp program, ” says one student. Nick says that he hopes to be East High School’s representative throughout his football career. He feels that staying in one school gives the students a chance to get to know him better and vice versa. This program is getting bigger and better every year. The students would like to thank the Kansas City Chiefs, the school District, and Mrs. Means, Sponsor, for all of the time and effort in organizing the personal visits and interviews. To Nick, the students say a special, “Thanks a lot, and we love you!” Written By: T. Urban ones WarmoL ej o Jones. Engasha Jones, Ryan Joseph, Brian Kemp, Jeffery Krctchzemer, Jennifer Lain. The class of 1991 arc suffering these same anxieties. As your social life grows, and months pass, you realize that you can survive through your freshman year. High school is definitely a place that you can take charge of your own life long goals. Keep your chins up class of “91 ”, with enough effort you can outshine them all. Our Cheerleaders arc, “Taking It To The Top !! 114 Cheerleaders How To Be A Cheerleader For East High First of all, before you ever think about becoming a Cheerleader for any school, you must be prepared to really be dedicated to the cheerlcading squad. You might be saying, “Oh there's nothing to being a cheerleader, all you have to do is look cute and smile alot. ” Little do you know that checcrleaders go through training first like athletes do. Our cheerleaders go to DC A camp over the summer. They also go to clinics in the Kansas City area to prepare themselves for the long hard school year to come. When it's time for football and basketball season, they put everything they've learned over the summer into action. The cheerleaders have a big responsibility. They have to keep the crowd motivated; then the players can stay hyped up and play a better game. This year we've added yell leaders on our squad to give us a more professional look. Maybe one year you might want to take on this new and exciting challenge. BY: Cecilia White Cheerleaders II5 1988 £astoni on Staff 1. Tutors arc: Kurt Hoffman. Rosalee Latino, Steve Snitz, and Rochelle Anderson The National Honor Society is the front runner of organizations and societies that promote appropriate recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in areas of academics, character, leadership, and service. College admissions officers often look for Honor Society membership as a valid indicator of whether the applicant will succeed at the collegiate level of post-secondary education. The Honor Society member has already proven that he or she is able to achieve in a cross-section of endeavors and is of high moral character. This year the National Honor Society has begun to function as a year-round organization. The membership is composed of 10 seniors who were inducted into the society as juniors last year. Tom Mallot Joining the photography staff second semester: Mark Compton. would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff members. Mostly to the ones that gave their extra time and effort in order for us to make our deadlines. Making the deadlines, that was our priority and I'm happy to say that we have lived up to it. Through the time of putting this book together, we have surely had our share of problems. They range from lack of communication among staff members to lack of pictures for our pages. Despite these complications the staff can be commended for pulling together to make sure that the pages due for each deadline is completed that day. This yearbook could not have been completed without the dedicated members of our staff. They are the upper class members of our staff. But the underclass is showing great potential that they are ready to take over the next Eastonian. Most of all. I cannot close without thanking our advisor, Mr. Tom Mallot, for his help and guidance. THANK YOU!!! 1988 Editor, Souphaphonc Nonthaveth 144 WALSWORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY MARCEL1NE MISSOURI •«« •
