HAROLD FISHER 'fi 1 .Oy WEE MR. HAROLD FISHER Mr. Fisher has been greatly missed this year. At the writing of this copy, Mr. Fisher is in the hospital recovering from heart surgery. We are happy to report he is recovering nicely. Mr. Fisher began his career in the Kansas City School District August 17, 1957. He soon was appointed Fireman at Northeast High on November 4 of that year. On July 1, 1960 he was sent to James School and managed that building until January 1, 1972 when he was transferred to Nowlin Jr. He was appointed Building Manager here at East May 16, 1972 and has been an important member of the East Family ever since. Due to his illness, Mr. Fisher's happy smiling face has been missed by students and staff and we look forward to his return. 2 Theme THE HERITAGE YEAR The Ford Foundation Grant In 1982 East recieved an award of 1000 dollars to help improve the climate of our school. This award made us eligible for competing for a 820,000 grant. In October we were advised that we had been awarded the grant to improve our school climate and develop a multi-cultural program for students during the 1983 school year. The money has been used to focus on our heritage and the development of an awareness of careers in agri-business. East has representatives from 10 ethnic groups. Members of those groups have formed the HERI- TAGE CLUB. The Club has four principle partsg the planning board, the student advisory, a performing troop and a two day spring fair. The founding club members have written a . Mosul You and Me in '83 N15 Stihl f f 2 1 5..- .A -x ye 3 L41 .' J.. V , ., S ,iw lp! constitution that they hope will cause a new tradition to be established at East. THE RAINBOW PEOPLE The Ford Foundation money has given us the opportunity to explore the contributions made to Kansas City by people of many colors and cultures. As the descendents of those early pioneers we of this generation are proud to be a part of East High and see ourselves as The Rainbow People our rainbow comes in the beautiful colors found in the I-Iuman,Race. Their STUDENT-TEACHER RAP SESSION was a real innovation for developing student-staff relations. Members this year were: Jeff Green, Kerry Shaw, Lori Hopkins, Kellie Goth, Tammie Moffett, Diane Kowalski, Sandy Dean, Mike Smith, Carlene Graham, Evelyn Sexton, Joe Moser, Alverta Williams, Ferron Ashby, Willie Jordan, Jerome Foster, Rickey Williams, Daphney Ford, Kelvin Kemp, Jesse Kizine, Arline Walker, Maria Meza, Carlos Arzola, Bobbie Pena, Jim Torres, Arthur White, Darwin White and Marijoy Balino. The committee chairpersons, Joe Moser and Evelyn Sexton were East's delegates to the Superintendents Advisory Council. Mrs. Suzanne Settle, from the Central Office Staff, came once a month to give leadership tips and guidance to the group. Her help was much appreciated. In this room are displays of artifacts from our various ethnic groups, and as many printed materials about ethnic history that we could find. In the future we hope to see this collection grow and become very valuable to our school. This year the center has been very action oriented because it was the meeting place of the Heritage planning board and the Student Advisory committee. In the future we hope it will become the favorite small group meeting place.
