Fireworks weren't needed to aid the 1979 Eastonian salute to activities this year. The selection of Student Council Officers, Senior Class Officers, Drill Team, and the Cheerleaders made all the noise needed. These were only a few of the multitude of clubs at East High School. This year, students are shown doing what comes naturally, playing and working. For it isn't easy just sitting inside a classroom. Students get restless and feel like jumping up and running out the door into the world-without a corridor pass. The whispers hiss back and forth across the rows of desks, t-hey can't sleep. They listen to the noises of monotonyg pencils scratching, fingers drumming, pages idly turning, pens tapping. They watch the clouds move or they stare at the ripples of heat rising from the radiators past the open windows. Their eyes are heavy and their lead-weighted feet ache to be barefoot and pounding against the packed sand of a hot windy beach. Outside, a truck roars past and everything vibrates for a brief instant. Floors, desks, students-everything comes quivering to life and nods back into death. They glance at the clock on the front wall and sigh. This is the mode of most schools, but East High School students are exceptional . . . an exuberant spirit . . . a zest for life is captured on each face. Their eyes and ears are open to the beat of the challenge, from the labs of chemistry and biology, to the vocational program of C.O.E. The students put their all into meeting the every day but rigorous courses of English and math. David Washington and Gary Johnson are enthusiastically Boarding. A few days before the Career Day the students had a wide variety of choices to choose from, for instance, Construction work, Secretarial work and many others. They learned information about education needed for different jobs and what the salary would be. The students then were divided up into 15 groups. They went to the rooms of the speaker they chose. The clubs and organizations act as an outlet for the enthusiastic ones. Girls and boys served their school faithfully this year. Pep club, pom pom, chess club, cheerleaders, R.O.T.C., and Eastonian staff served their sponsors well. Their zest for life and bubbly personalities came through. It has been an exciting year of games, Homecoming Parades, and dances as well as many awards. The students with whom we share our days and experiences became our friends. lQ..QL im fr. Student Council, as usual, had an active year. They were active in community affairs as well as school affairs. They raised money collecting for the United Way. They reached a goal of over eight-hundred dollars. The Coke machines and the Bear Necessity Store also provided much-needed funds. Money raised was used to finance the Honor Society Pins and the Broaklick Award. They also organized the orientation, the Homecom- ing and Parade successfully. Sponsors this year were Ms. Betti Pierce, Mr. Robert Holder, and Ms. Linda King. Pres. Diane Manning, Vice Pres. Gail Edwardsg Sec. Kelly Rucker, Treas. George McCarthy, Sgt. Instead of having a posed group picture, Mr. Mallot's camera observed us in preparing layout sheets, doing paste-ups and checking over body copy. The advanced photography class taught by Mr. Mallot took all of the pictures for this year's book. The staff had to work extra hard because our sponsor, Mrs. Elaine Schlozman accepted a new job opportunity with the school district, and went to her new assignment before the end of the first semester. The new sponsor, Mr. Laurence Mason worked with the staff, school, and Walsworth personnel in putting the story of the 1978-79 school year in print. East has produced a yearbook for many years. The enthusiasm and effort of former students serves as a guide when deadlines need to be met. New people on the staff add ideas to improve the Eastonian. The job of the staff is not easy, but the skills learned by working together are valuable for the future. The high school curriculum attempts the great task of developing a balanced personality and preparing the student for future activities. Our own English language is probably taught and studied more extensively than any other subject in the school course. East's English Department strives to give the student a broad general background in literature as well as in grammar and structure. Mathematics and science are two studies whose importance was recognized even as early as the time of the Egyptians in the solving of their practical problems. East has an outstanding math and science department. The study of practical arts -woodwork, metalwork, drafting, cooking, and sewing-has a lasting and 110 Ween. .,,-W K. ' Kfsfltifeii t fx- 'f . Besides preparing students for careers in these fields, these subjects may constantly be applied to needs of the home. Music, art, photography, and dramatics are essential to the full enjoyment of life, or even a career. The work of the Ft. O. T. Both Spanish and French, the only languages taught this year, have an unquestionable importance in the present day world. By teaching today's youth the history, of mankind teachers play an important part in preparing the next generation to carry forward civilization's torch. COUNSELORS Our counselors' play a very important part in the life of every East High student.. Any .student may feel free to take his problems to his counselor, be it a low grade or a need for a college scholarship. Whenever problems arise, the counselors are always ready and willing to help in solving them. They encourage capablelstudents to attend college and help many eligible and deserving seniors attain scholarships. Each student is indebted to his counselor, for his success in the future and his success is due partly by the guidance he receives in high school. M4 ss.. 22,52,65,76,89 155 As you review the happenings of the 1978 - 79 school year, many events will come to mind as being of special significance. Some of the students at East High School made noteworthy academic records and were included on the honor rolls. Others made contributions on the various sports teams which represented East in athletic contests. Some took the time to show that they cared about their school and those students, faculty, staff, and administration who ARE East High. No yearbook could begin to picture each of the hundreds of events that make up each school day. The events captured by the yearbook photographers give a glimpse of this school year that we can treasure throughout the years. Many persons have been a part of East High School since its beginning in 1926. As this edition of the Eastonian is prepared for publication, we learn of the passing of Dr. Wallace M. Grube, the first sponsor of the yearbook. Dr. Grube was a teacher of horticulture and photography until his retirement in 1961. An avid sports fan, he received a school letter jacket in recognition of his support of Bear athletics. Pappy , as he was known to the thousands of boys and leaders who attended camp in the summertime at the Bartle Scout Reservation near Osceola, Missouri, served as handicraft director from 1929 until 1978. Education was an important part of Dr. Grube's life. His father, Wallace, was dean of Missouri Valley College, Marshall, for over 25 years. His mother taught music at Clarksburg and Odessa. Two of Mr. Grube's sisters taught in the Kansas City Public Schools. Erdice Grube taught at Central and Northeast from 1921 to 1954, and Bessie Grube taught at Westport from 1929 to 1957. Each member of this family recognized the importance of education, especially in the troubled times in which they lived. ln 1979, strife and turmoil still seeks to divide our world. We still have the opportunity for a better future within our reach. The course of the world in the days ahead is ours to determine. May the inspiration of Dr. Wallace M. Grube and others like him who have given of themselves for the betterment of society bring true meaning to our years of education at East and inthe future. fc ,. . 5f?ffiFxf7iE Enjoying a moment with a small friend. 156 Dr. Wallace M.
