Classes Small ln Horticulture Horticulture is a class basically concerned with ornamental flowers and plants. This class was started in 1965 as the result of a vocational technical survey of the community that showed a need for this kind of education. There was a total of 16 students enrolled in horticulture this year. Classes run for three hours during the day and from 5 to 7 in the evening. Most of the class time is spent maintaining the greenhouse. This in- cluded potting, feeding. watering. weeding and pruning plants. A text- book is used for studying and testing. East is the only school in the Kansas City School District that offers horticulture. Any student in this district may enroll for the class here at East. Cooking classes came from leaky faucets and stopped up drains last year to garbage disposals and dish- washers this year. Now the cooking classes have 8 ranges. 2 dishwashers, 1 microwave oven, and new carpeting. Mrs. Phyllis Diener said she couldn't believe how an old room could look so good. Besides new facilities and equip- ment, there were more boys taking the cooking class. However, no child development course was offered this year and family relations class was taught through the social studies depart- ment instead of homemaking as in the past. On the other hand, Mrs. Geneva Reiman's sewing classes did not have enough electrical outlets for their sewing machines and irons. They would also have liked to have had curtains to decorate the room so it would not look so bare, but the funds were not available. Out With The Old, In With The New 4 Q I Y. I' 'ir 5 N ' aff
