Classes Small ln Horticulture Horticulture is a class basically concerned with ornamental flowers and plants. This class was started in 1965 as the result of a vocational technical survey of the community that showed a need for this kind of education. There was a total of 16 students enrolled in horticulture this year. Classes run for three hours during the day and from 5 to 7 in the evening. Most of the class time is spent maintaining the greenhouse. This in- cluded potting, feeding. watering. weeding and pruning plants. A text- book is used for studying and testing. East is the only school in the Kansas City School District that offers horticulture. Any student in this district may enroll for the class here at East. The greenhouse and classroom is located at the school garden, 5001 East 17th Street. 3.451-n -v, I, , Page 28 Photo l. French students visited Andre's French restaurant and participated in word games to acquaint them with the cultural background. Spanish classes remained about the same as far as enrollment. There were two beginning classes and about 15 advanced students. Spanish was taught by three teachers during the year at different times. The newest teacher was Mrs. Bufton who began in March. Mrs. Johnson believed the ten- tative enrollment of 37 for next year brightens the future for French at East. Page 29 Photo I. Mrs. Duran spoke in Spanish to her classes to keep them alert. 2.
