Miss Frances Houser's art students made piniatas and other art products for sale for the art department. They also tried to sell plants. However, the tur- nout wasn't very good, In Mr. Jim Ryon's art classes many students enjoyed going out- doors to do their work during the warm weather. The advanced art students drew up a design for the drafting class. and Student Council bookstore. They got credit for the designing and painting of it. An arts and crafts course was added to the art department this year, taught by Miss Gloria Zmolek. Students worked with leather, pottery or macrame. In Mr. Tom Mall0t's photography classes, the first year students learned the basics of photography by using the oatmeal box camera They learned the parts of the camera about lighting and the taking and making of pictures During Christmas the students made Christmas cards out f negatives and some visited the Plaza at night to take slides The reason for Valentine Por trait pictures was to supplement funds The school district paid for only paper chemicals and film All other equipment was purchased by money making proJects Practical, Marketable Skills Typing, accounting and stenography were the three business courses offered to students this year. Not too many changes were made this year except there was no problem with the typewriters not working because the repairman visited the school every two weeks. Quite a few more students enrolled in these classes. Typing teacher, Mrs. McKanna says, Typ- ing is a practical, marketable skill, and I believe that it should be re- quired. Accounting students learned the basics on how to keep records, finan- cial statements and prepare taxes for businesses and personal use. Dictation, punctuation, spelling and transcription were just a few of the secretarial practices taught to stenography students. 7 X ,f .xr ll W v f . fi fpgfgiivai I YN 1 is . French students visited Andre's French restaurant and participated in word games to acquaint them with the cultural background. Spanish classes remained about the same as far as enrollment. There were two beginning classes and about 15 advanced students. Spanish was taught by three teachers during the year at different times. The newest teacher was Mrs. Bufton who began in March. Mrs. Johnson believed the ten- tative enrollment of 37 for next year brightens the future for French at East. Page 29 Photo I. Mrs. Duran spoke in Spanish to her classes to keep them alert. 2. Mrs. john- son reviewed French words with students using flush cards. Classes Small ln Horticulture Horticulture is a class basically concerned with ornamental flowers and plants. This class was started in 1965 as the result of a vocational technical survey of the community that showed a need for this kind of education. There was a total of 16 students enrolled in horticulture this year. Classes run for three hours during the day and from 5 to 7 in the evening. Most of the class time is spent maintaining the greenhouse. This in- cluded potting, feeding. watering. weeding and pruning plants. A text- book is used for studying and testing. East is the only school in the Kansas City School District that offers horticulture. Any student in this district may enroll for the class here at East. The greenhouse and classroom is located at the school garden, 5001 East 17th Street. 3.451-n -v, I, , Page 28 Photo l. D- A Cooking classes came from leaky faucets and stopped up drains last year to garbage disposals and dish- washers this year. Now the cooking classes have 8 ranges. 2 dishwashers, 1 microwave oven, and new carpeting. Mrs. Phyllis Diener said she couldn't believe how an old room could look so good. Besides new facilities and equip- ment, there were more boys taking the cooking class. However, no child development course was offered this year and family relations class was taught through the social studies depart- ment instead of homemaking as in the past. On the other hand, Mrs. Geneva Reiman's sewing classes did not have enough electrical outlets for their sewing machines and irons. They would also have liked to have had curtains to decorate the room so it would not look so bare, but the funds were not available. Out With The Old, In With The New 4 Q I Y. I' 'ir 5 N ' aff m Industrial Arts Develop Skills For Future Use Many classes today combine learning skills and practicing with pleasure. Examples of this are the in- dustrial arts classes. Crafts, wood, and metal classes teach students how to work with machines and different types of materials. Students are allowed to choose what they would like to make as long as they experience the different methods in that course. When completed, the project is graded on the quality of the workmanship. The student has the option to purchase his project, or it becomes a display example for other classes. Prices of the projects are recorded throughout the quarter, then the students pay one amount for all items bought. Drafting teaches students how to draw, read, design and construct plans, Many students enroll in these classes to prepare for future vocations or hobbies as well as enjoyment of the COUTSC. The classes offered are biology. chemistry. ecology. general science. human science, and physics. In class, students Work on labs, have discussions, watch film strips and do book work. Generally, the science teachers agree that the main purpose of science is to help students to better understand themselves and to help solve simple everyday problems in- volving science. In most science classes. there are labs to help students understand the procedures in finding solutions to different problems, i vnu- . Page 38 Photo l. The classes include English, I history. math, reading. science, spell- ing, and writing. There were more teachers for special education this year than in past years. There were approximately sixty special education students, In each class the students were able to work at their own pace, and this showed their progress on an in- dividual level. There were ap- proximately ten student tutors to help the special students. Special equipment was used to aid students in learning. l I ll gl l l, l M Page 40 Photo 1. The purpose of the board is to better the educational opportunities and services for young people on the East side. This year the board has brought about increased reading help so that now all 5 elementary feeder schools to East are benefiting. Also, it saw to it that all kindergarteners were tested on an abilities development survey. Besides the two community aids from last year, Mrs. Donna Ford was added to the staff. These women helped check on the students' absences, arranged field trip buses and helped students with their in- dividual problems. Mr. Dick Gardner, who donates his time, estimated he spends 25-30 hours per Week involved in E.C.B, work. When asked why, he replied that his own children being at East was the main incentive. It derives its responsibilities from the Missouri General Assembly and the Constitution ofthe State of Missouri, Members are elected on even- numbered years and serve without pay, Thus, this year election was held. Mrs. james P. Bonadonna is East's representative. The Board sets the time and place for its meetings which are open to the public except for some closed meetings on personnel matters, legal actions. and problems involving students. One of the important duties of the Board is the selection of a Superintendent of Schools who is given the responsibility of choosing and directing a staff. Upon the movement of Dr. Robert Medcalf this fall from super- intendent to consultant, Dr. Edward Fields has been acting superinten- dent. The Board has yet to select a new superintendent, at Page 110 Photo 3. Mrs. Mary Roberson. 4. Mr. Sam Carpenter. vice-president. 5. Mr. james Bonadonna 6 Mrs Maurice Dwyer. treasurer. 7. He estimates that he spends around ten evenings a month involved in these activities. The new social studies media center is one of the most meaningful changes made this year commented Mr. Heine. From East To West After seven years at East High School. Vice-Principal Archie Kelley was transferred to West High School. The reason for the Change was that East's enrollment was not large enough for two disciplinary vice- prineipals. and West was in need of one. His responsibilities at East were to work with the students and their problems. Mr. Kelley was well respected and liked by many of the students. Faculty members and students put together a farewell assembly and reception for him. II-1 Page 114 Photo 1. Mr. Kelley was caught in a jovial mood. 2. A P Love Comes To East The main problem the vice- principals had with students this year was class cutting. There were many suspensions due to this. There are three vice-principals. Mr. William White's and Mr. William Love's main purpose was to deal with school discipline and violations. Mr. William Ridley handled class schedules and changes. At the beginning of the year. a new program was started in which students with conference Cards went to their counselors on their first offense and then to the vice-principal after. This was discontinued because first referrals became too numerous. Halfway through the school year, Mr. William Love was transferred to East in place of Mr. Archie Kelley, former vice-principal. Mr. William Love came from Central High School. Sf S -. X.-f . 1. Page- 116 Photo 1. Mr William Love cleared a suidciii off of the conference card list. 2. Of course, there were letters of recommendation to be written, college information to disseminate and rank in class to figure among other routine tasks. Each counselor worked with eighth through senior pupils accor- ding to a certain section of the alphabet. Some discipline and student absentee problems were to be referred to the counselors at the first of the year, but the plan did not jell as there were too many referrals. JOHN CORCORAN-lean ning disabilities, JAMES DICKSON4CiViCs. Mid-year reorganization by the school district affected many teachers at East. Four were transferred from East: three were made building sub- stitutes and three teachers came from other schools. A vice-principal was transferred and an asst. vice- principal brought in. The reading lab organization went from 1 teacher to 3, Woodshop was reorganized, and plans for a different newspaper setup were dropped. A second media class became an impossibility. Many teachers did not know exactly what they would be teaching until several '77 days before the start of the semester. The reason given by the School Board for the changes was that the student-teacher ratio was too low. Thus, money was saved by bum- ping teachers to buildings sub- stitutes. Persons used to substituting were then called less frequently or not at all. On the positive side, East had three instructors come from the Metropolitan Junior College travel- ing college program for 1 hour, 3 days a week, Students received college credit and only had to buy their books. This year's custodial staff combined their duties with both day and evening workers. Seven custodians during the day kept up minor repairs, swept halls, cleaned bathrooms, operated the elevator, and took care of laundry as students still occupied the building. Six evening workers made the final repairs needed and completed all cleaning to prepare for the next day. Because of the rise in van- dalism this year, checking all win- dows and entry ways became a needed security procedure, East's custodial members consist of both men and women, Among them is also a father-daughter team, Lawrence Gruver and Mary Sewing. -at -rmeiih fra' 1 . . t if if if . ,M 'f lv 94 04 lf , 4 t M wg l'l 2 H ?'L Zi? -.1 0 , X ge .... f 4 'J W A' r 5 i Ginn Bukovac George Bunch Lnulzi Cairer Terri Carter Valerie Carter Carole Casarnento Mursliu Chase Connie Combs xx, ,fr -5- f ri v- 4 If V vx, Linda Conley Rick Conley ,l ull n Cook Curol Cox ,. :N -Qi Q.
