Accounting, when taken for two years, prepares the stu- dent to be an accounting clerk. The typing and stenography classes had new books which simplified the courses. Stenography helps students learn secretarial practices such as dic- tation, transcription, punctuation and spelling. To help give students an idea of what is available, a one-semester sophomore course was required this year. Folklore and mythology were new offerings, also. Photography students studied the principles of light and learned how to use the adjustable camera un- der all kinds of lighting conditions. Art students worked on projects such as oil painting, silk screening and studied the role of an artist. The band participated in groundbreaking ceremonies at Armco Steel, marched in the American Royal parade and hosted the all-city band festival. The choir performed at area elementary schools during the Christ- mas season and had a series of spring concerts. QTOPJ Mr. Ryon showed Evelyn Green how to squeegee the silk screen. As a project advanced photography class made life-sized photographs of members of the basketball team. The curriculum ranges from general math to modern introductory analysis. Because of the new program in- troduced three years ago, sophomores could enroll in trigonometry this year and be introduced to calculus their senior year. The annual R.O.T.C. ball was held at the Missouri National Guard Ar- mory. It was an all-city ball with five different schools attending. A large amount of the year is spent preparing for the federal in- spection, held in the spring. The students were inspected and queried about their equipment and procedures. American history, current affairs. black history, and sociology. For next year the social studies program will have a new lab. providing independent study facilities for students. Labs aid students For students who need extra help in reading and math, there were the labs. The two labs had special YM.. equipment and instructional materials designed to raise the students ability in the subject. The reading lab instructor was Mrs. Theurer with Mrs. Brown as assis- The math lab changed this year. It was moved to a new room and was put under the supervision of Mrs. Nichols instead of student tutors. The assistant was Miss Debbie The special education classes were taught by Mrs. Jones and Mr. Watkins. The special education students are under supervision of one teacher all day. The special education classes this year instituted a work study program similar to the one C.O.E. students are on. CTOPJ Shelly Hale and Violet Buzzard did a physical checkup on a dummy . Sharon Lee instructed children about dental care in the child-care facilities at Vo-tech, Vo- tech trains Fast High Sthool h ad ap proximately 132 students involved in Vo-tech, three fourths of whom were seniors. There were several classes offered ranging from auto mechanics to commercial sewing. At the end of each class a com- pletion certificate was given to the student who maintained a M average and an attendance record of not less than SSUEJ. Half of the students attended Vo-tech in the morning and the other half in afternoon. Free transportation was provided. Its purpose was to promote leadership in the field of business and marketing. It also provides C,O.E. students participa- tion in activities other than work and school. There were 42 members. It was represented in district competition by 10 members. From these 5 trophies were won by Peggy Cunningham, Sam Bailey, Warren Calvert and Donna Young. These students went on to compete in contests on the state level held in the Lake of the Ozarks area. Also. two members, Sharon Graves and Donna Young. were sent to Madison, Wisconsin to attend the Central Region Leadership Conference. Ground floor K planners Inter-society was a group of students organized to do the ground floor planning for the literary clubs' activities. Each club sent represen- tatives to the Inter-society meetings to discuss and vote on plans. Inter-society began the year try- ing to reorganize and find a new spon- sor. Mrs. Sabatka, sponsor of Eulex- ia, helped the students get started. By second semester they found a sponsor, Mrs. Nichols. Because of the frequent meetings, the club had over 80 members. The club, sponsored by Mr. Buchanan, entered many tournaments. Unlike last year the club did not take any honors, The Chess Club members learned how to play chess or improve their skills by discussing the game strategy. S Qefff I Leundis couple captures title! The Valentine Mixer was planned by Inter-society and held at Whatsoever Community House. Ticket money was used to pay for the live band that played at the dance. All other profits went to Inter- society. The candidates for King and Queen of Hearts were put up by the school's various clubs and organizations. The winning couple was deter- mined by which couple had the most money collected from the student body. The votes of money were collected by the club members and candidates in decorated containers. Karla Albertson and George Grimes, representing Leundis, were announced King and Queen by the master of ceremonies of the dance, Mr. Buie. Karla was crowned by Mr. Heine and received an array of red and white flowers, Sandi Kulik and Dennis Steffes, representing Eulexia, were first runners-up. Vicki jones and Robert Kessler were second runners-up. Before football games, the girls made goal post signs and spirit cards for the players. During the summer, both the junior varsity and varsity squads went to camp to learn acrobatics. The J.V. squad was awarded the dynamic cheerleader ribbon while at camp. For the Jerry Lewis telethon, the J.V. cheerleaders went to the Blue Ridge Mall and collected over S100 for muscular dystrophy. Tryouts for cheerleading include interviews with teachers, acrobatic and poise tests. The minimum grade requirement is an M average. Instead of the voting being done at the game or dance, balloting was open to all students during school hours. This was done not only for fairness in voting. but also so that the queen could be crowned at half-time before more persons than attend the dance following the game. TyEtta Chavez was crowned as the football homecoming queen for 1974-75. She was escorted by R. W. Eli during the homecoming and by John Kawaski during the game and the dance, Ty was crowned by Geni Torres. last year's queen, and flowers were presented by Fred Broski, locally well-known television personality. Again this season, cross country was coached by Tom Logan, making him a second year coach. Coach Logan worked hard along with the Bears, helping them and encouraging them. Junior varsity runners who won medals were Charles Edman who placed 13, and Gerald Patterson who placed 14. In the varsity race, john Smith took second place while juan Ortiz placed tenth. Because John Smith placed high in the city meet, he went on to the regional championships in which he placed 28 out of over 90 runners. They also played Center and Brookfield as pre-season games. Bears lost the game against Center with a score of 35-38. However, they won the game against Brookfield with a score of 66-43. In the Interscholastic Tourna- ment, ten schools competed for first place, Out of the ten schools com- peting, East took seventh place. Four schools competed in the Liberty Tournament which was played in Liberty, Missouri. East placed second in this tournament, The Turkey Tournament is 6 tournament played around Thanksgiving. Four schools competed. Those schools were East, Westport, St. john, and Van Horn. Junior varsity thrashed the St. john Knights with a score of 56-31. The team was led by Paul McClain, who scored 13 points, and by Leroy Crawford, who also had a fine outing at forward, Westport defeated the junior varsity Bears in the final round ofthe East tournament by a score of 69-53, Westport received first place in the East tournament, and East took second place. rf I 109 . East defeated Martin Luther King, 54-53, East started out slow but led the half, 25-23. King came out of the half on fire and took a ten point lead. The team practiced twice daily at 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. even during the Christmas holidays. Coach Adams stated, If a swimmer isn't in top physical condition, fine form and technique aren't going to get him through a meet. The teams which East swam against to take the first in their divi- sion were Central, Manual, and Southeast. Individual East members have won and placed well in matches throughout the season, but at this meet, the individuals added up to a number one team for East. The following lifters took first place in their weight division in the Southwest meet: Glenn Mashaney placed by lifting 240 pounds: Brian Buie, 365 pounds: David Trebisovski, 320 poundsg James Combs, 350 pounds, and Milton Piper, 355 pounds. The girls who went out for track this year, practiced hard after school in the halls before the season actually opened. When the weather cleared, the girls practiced outside. The girls also competed in the regular track competition such as shot put, relays, sprints, broad jumps and hurdles. The school board met twice a month for regular sessions and once or twice a week for work sessions this year. Some of their regular meetings were open meetings held at various high schools. One of these meetings was held at East. Many members of the faculty and the East community attended. A task force, established by the board this year, was to help control Violence in the schools. To help ex- pand speech and debate classes, there was a IA cent sales tax proposed this year. With the help of the of- fice, the vice-principals kept a close tab on absences. One of the jobs of Mr. White and Mr. Kelley included all disciplinary problems. Mr. Ridley worked with the counselors and teachers in scheduling classes. Operation sweep was a plan for teachers to patrol the halls during class periods and bring students without passes to the office. It was fairly successful at first, but it was not continued on a regular basis. The office ladies took care of attendance, registration, textbooks and school finances. 197 Counselors ' jobs vary Counselors are involved in many activities besides enrollment and per- sonal counseling. The College Day is an annual event held in the fall where many colleges Visit to help the juniors and seniors in choosing the college best suited for them. They also arranged transportation to attend the College Fair at the Municipal Auditorium. In past years, dessert had to be bought separately. ears of SET' This year, when inflation raised the price of many products and ser- vices, prices in the cafeteria also went up. Plate lunches were still 556. but the price of snack foods and separate items went up. This year, for the first time, pop was sold separately and with plate lunches. Mrs. Rinken- baugh, cafeteria manager, com- mented, We were able to have Cokes this year through a govern- ment subsidy. She explained that pop sales also helped keep down the price of plate lunches. Another way of keeping prices down was by not ser- ving potatoes when noodles were served. This has been in practice in other schools. but this was the first year that East has done it to any en- tent. At the beginning of the year. music was allowed in the cafeteria. Each morning before school, breakfast was sold to anyone who wanted it. 201 202 Kim Jackson found her book at the card catalogue. Books can be found three ways: by the author's name, the book title and subject matter. The library sponsors successful programs Several new programs were Craig Griffin waited while David Boutros found his card and checked his hunk f,, started in the library this year, in- cluding a paperback book exchange and a comic book collection. Students brought their old paperbacks and ex- changed them for others. It was successful, but the comic book collec- tion bombed out . A telecopier was placed in the library to copy long lists of books titles within four to six minutes. A teacher's resource service was available this year to obtain books for special assignments from all other libraries. A program for children included three parties and film presentations. At the end of the school year, the librarians went to elementary schools to tell students about the summer reading programs. By early summer, the library plans to go to a computerized system. The security guards need no special training, but they could take classes in defense if they wanted them. The guards met and made friends with many of the students they saw in the halls every day. The security guards felt that the closer they were to the students, the easier they were to cooperate with.
