I F oreword The year 1967-1968 marks the centennial of the Kansas City School System. From the muddy banks of the Missouri River a city was born. Pioneers who settled here were aware of the need of an education for their children. In 1867 the first school was opened in Kansas City. From this one-room schoolhouse to the newest educational building, the School System of Kansas City has progressed. During this period of progression. East High School in 1926 opened her doors. In the forty-two years of her history, over ten thousand students have passed through her doorways. She has held a major role in the accomplishments of her students of the past and is playing a vital part in the development of today’s student. These accomplishments, these experiences, and these memories, we hope to record in your book, the 1968 Eastonian. A graduate of Colorado University with a M.A. in Education and Latin, she became East’s first Latin teacher and on occasions has also taught English. After thirty-six years of faithful service. Miss McClure left East in the fall of 1962 to be a counselor at Westport High School, but returned to East in the fall of 1965 as subfreshman counselor. In recognition of her countless services to East High, it is with deep pride that we dedicate this 1968 Eastonian to Miss Virginia McClure. A Helping Hand— An Open Heart. Time Molds Our Lives. He found the people to be very friendly, and more or less as I expected them to be. Also, he felt that the students were much like those back in Queechy High School except for one main difference — their informality of dress was rather shocking.” This is understandable since students at Queechy are required to wear uniforms. Mr. Hortle plans to travel over many parts of the world befor returning home next year to resume teaching at Queechy High. 28 Michael (lalwell Paul Day Robert I lolder Brian North Tom Mallot James Michaels Science A .good foundation in science is essential in any career planning. Under the direction of Mrs. Oyloe, East’s new drama teacher, assisted by Kathy Muncy and Dorothy Kep-ner, student directors, the Drama Department presented “See How They Run” by Phillip Kin on December 8 and 9. (lasting for the fall play began early in October. In the following weeks, those students chosen spent spare moments memorizing lines and practicing gestures with early morning rehearsals at 6:30 a.m. By double casting, this amusing English play developed into two provocative interpretations. The setting of the play was England during World War II. and the plot concerned the Vicar’s wife, an exactress, who was visited by an old flame. The plot thickened as a Russian spy hid in the house with the additional entrances of the wife's uncle and another vicar. A mix-up in identities occurred with uproar-ous results, but finally the spy was captured and the mystery solved. NOW . The 1967 Outburst, presented November 17 and 18. brought glimpses of Camelot and hippies to East. “Cat in Camelot was the theme utilized by the Outburst. Mr. Mabbott, other faculty, and students worked diligently to organize this production. A huge poster was hung in the front hall to promote interest, and tickets were sold in homerooms. The traditional all-day dress rehearsal and the long waiting line for reservations confirmed hopes for a successful show. The continuity of the Outburst centered around a hippie who, by a strange potion, was transported back to Camelot and King Arthur’s court. A knight captured the hippie and brought him before King Arthur. The king, tired of the routine entertainment, ordered the hippie to produce something different, and he performed his task with the surprising results that Camelot was turned into a swinging city.
