To East High School brave and true Gur voices now we raise, Over all the City wide in melodies of praise, Ever foremost in the fray, may she always stand Guarded loyally and well by our faithful band. So let us fight! Eight! Eight for dear East High, The name we all revere. And let us fight! Eight! Eight for everyone. So give a rousing Rah! Ptah! Rah! We yell, We yell for East High School We love so dear. Then let the Chorus swell. Cf her fair fame we'll spread the name of Dear East l-ligh. Rah! Rah! Rah! AIIUN Dedication - well, that's what the sign says. Perhaps I should intro- duce myself. I am the spirit of East High School. I haven't been christened any particular name as yet, but, nameless as I am, I am still known to every boy or girl who has ever been in East High. But to get to the business at hand. I have been chosen to dedicate this 1953 Eastonian. It is not as easy as you may think, to find something to which to dedicate this great big book. I thought perhaps I could dedi- cate it to our principal, Mr. C. O. Wil- liams. That would make a nice, reserved, little essay, and I could write -about all the nice things that Mr. Williams does for the school, but the book has been dedicated to him in past years and there isn't much left to say about that subject. And then, I could write a nice flowery oration on dedicating the book to some of our American principles Cno re- lation to Mr. Williamsll such as Freedom of the Press, the Golden Rule, Free Edu- cation, or any other high ideal by which we try to live. But you can read that sort of literature in the magazines or news- papers any day of the week, and I rather wanted to make this dedication a little different . . . Cto be continuedl uf ABOVE Something new in the way oi photogra- phy was experienced by Paul Childs and Iim Peeler, members of the '53 Eastonian Stall. Leaning from the window of a gliding plane, they snapped the bird's eye view of our school. The new wing to be undertaken this summer will make the campus picture com- plete. Designed to balance the South wing. it will add a swimming pool, a girls' gym, and several much needed classrooms to the pres- ent building. I gr aff' .7 ov.. . ,H-- tif' . RIGHT A thrilling sight in the soft morning light is the regular flag raising pageant. All around the campus the students stand at attention while East High's R.O.T.C. boys raise Old Glory to her position at the top ol our flag pole. 4 l va ff 5' 151451 'B Hn t f l .3 E 4 4 A . . rr rx' ' . ,. fl PSS: -if fx i 1 , . , ...fw5gt,4g 5 f IV , My Q '94 ,, A S ABOVE The feature presentation, Mother Was a Freshman, went over enthusiastically with a full-house audience. The various charac- ters portrayed by members of the Drama Class, humorously brought the play to a suc- cessful climax. RIGHT Art is something that can be applied to everyday life. It becomes a highly important cultural contribution in the life of the students. ABOVE Naturalizing nine foreign citizens into the United States made one of the most interest- ing assemblies of the year. Iudge Duncan held a session of the Federal Court on our stage and swore in the applicants. East High is the first school to be honored by such an assembly. lunlor Red Cross is man's better than best friend. We are convinced that the Iun- ior Red Cross is one of the greatest carriers of the peace and friendship germ that is known today. The young people have seen this geatness in the American Red Cross and in the International Red Cross. With this vis- ion before us, we too are inspired to give of our time, enthusiasm, and energy. Our ener- gies cmd services bridge oceans and conti- nents to other lands. While the team is on the court striving to gain and keep the lead. the cheering crowd keeps spirits high. An unidentified Southeast player tries in vain to block a jump shot made by Dean Russell. Despite the excitement and cheers of the iootball crowds. the seriousness and tension about the players are shown as Coach Brown talks to Forrest Rhoudebush and Ronnie lacks. Underneath all ot the glory and im- portance thrust upon the school football heroes is a world of tactical and physical training, giving our boys important training beyond the classroom. . e Z A 1 egg 'aqui W V 'wi z., A 4 x ,S-.I , 1 c ,b,gdi.:k'. 4' , V-, X f N ff 1 I 5 Y Q. Wyandotte made its initial crossing of our goal line with three minutes left in the third quarter as it was apparent that East's charges were weakening, A drive of 70 yards which originated on Wyandotte's 30 was climaxed by a pass from quarterback Ed Kohler to Frank Gritton, who raced the final five yards for the Wyandotte touchdown. From the beginning of man's struggle for freedom and personal liberties, the school has been its greatest leadway. Open House was held in November, to acquaint the par- ents with the program of the school and to renew old friendships of former students with teachers. Much excitement was witnessed as parents, teachers, and alumni got together for brief chats about old times. PRUCTURS Walid is the command that reaches the ears of many stu- dents who tail to realize the speed at which they are travel- ing. When they turn around they are face to face with one ot the many fun-loving boys who have turned policeman for an hour. Their duties are to keep the smaller members of the herd from being trampled in the mad dash to the cafeteria and also to keep the lines straight along the counter, Boys enjoy being proctors, because they get liberties not enjoyed by their classmates. Holding the lunch line at the door ot the cafeteria gives them an opportunity to chitchat with the guys and gals who aren't in their classes, and to send their friends to the end ot the line it they try to take advantage of a friendship. Being a proctor also gives them a chance to cross the line into the section that is re- stricted for girls only. TOP ROW' Earl Richards. Iohn Root, Paul Bundy. 2nd ROW' Dick Libby, Bob Hill.
