As we work together in the classrooms, root for our teams, and take part in club activities, we realize that our school is more than a building of brick, mortar, and stone. It is a storehouse of ideals, action and dreams. It encourages the setting up of goals for achievement which will bring the community, the nation and the world nearer to the attainment of democratic ideals. It is to this spirit of East, that we dedicate our 1948 Eastonian. We feel that we have deepened the spirit and traditions developed through the years. We have become a part of East-High School just as East has become a part of us. John Hamilton. M, mi When we recall our days at East, we shall think of our principal and friend, Mr. C. O. Williams. His principles and philosophy will ever serve as incentives to finer living. His faith, his humor, and his kindness will long be remembered by every student. His vital interest in every student and every organization has made our school year a happy and profitable one. An avid reader, he collects many facts for his excellent speeches from the books and periodi cals in the school library. How can I help you? This opening question paves the way for a friendly discussion of problems. ni 51 ration Supervising the extra-curricular activities, acting as adviser of the junior and senior classes, seeing that the mechanics of the school run smoothly, are just a few of the duties of our busy vice-principal, Mr. John N. Broadlick. He has a sincere interest in all, and his intelligent, dependable judgment guides us through the year's work. His pleasant smile and friendly manner make him a popular administrator. Miss Katherine Stenfors, secretary, and Mrs. Fiances Maddi, registrar, are the efficient office workers. Regardless of their many duties, they take time to show a genuine interest in the affairs of the school and the activities of the pupils. Miss Anna Stewart, our counselor, can be counted on to act wisely and sympathetically in every situation. We appreciate her charm and grace, and in spite of her many tasks, she is never too busy to talk with us. She has a genuine interest in and and an understanding of our problems. Jack the giant killer” Vaughn was an excellent end, always full of fight. Dan Mathis, chosen for his excellent running, passing, tackling, and blocking, stepped into the backfield. One of the leagues most speedy and rugged chargers was Junior Paris. He was the downfall of many opposing backs, and a bulwark of the East defense. 16 Among the second team all-stars was Ted Pickett, ace Grizzly field general. Driving power was supplied the team by Dale Miles. Lowell Morse missed the first string by but a single vote. J-ootba ((Season Jn ?, euieiv East 25—Manual 7 The fighting Bears opened the ’47 league season with a rousing victory over the Manual eleven. The Cardinals were able to score in the late minutes of the game. East 20—Westport 0 Playing the rangy Westport team, the Grizzlies capitalized on Tiger fumbles. Swift chargers of the Bruin line took the bobbles made by the Bengals, and the Bear backfield was quick to convert them into touchdowns. East 19—Paseo 0 The Pirates held the mighty East gridsters scoreless for the first half of the game. Tom Cook was hard to hold, and his passing and running might have meant touchdowns had the Green and Black gridmen been less alert. East 31—Southeast 0 Hopes for the title grew as the East machine rolled over the Southeast Knights. The Bears set a scoring record for the period up to this time. East had begun to prove her quality. A Southeast player slows Miles as others rush in. 18 East 13—Central 6 Clipping the wings of the Central Eagles was a little more difficult than the previous games had been for the Easterners. They were scored upon a second time by a pass from Jerome Willingham to Jack Snapps. The power of the East aggregation was at last recognized. East 7—Southwest 6 A thrill a minute as the Bears edged out the Indians bv the narrow margin of one point. A Dass, Mathis to Pickett, accounted for that point. Power wasn't lacking, however, for the Bears had scored two touchdowns which were called back for penalties. East 13—Northeast 16 This was the last and the most crucial game of the season for the Bears. This was the game that decided the championship. The powerful Norsemen found the sparky East aggregation no easy opponent, for even though the line was strong and the Vikines weighed an average of 38 pounds more, the mighty Bears drew first blood as they had in their previous tilts. A desperate but beautiful aerial failed the Bears in the final SECOND TEAM minutes. To Kw: Lewis, Johnson. Violett Duffy, Patterson, James, Trarv, Fidler, Chennault, Niess. Botoroff, Wilhite. DL “Big 3our”WaL Seaion Coach Roy Brown, head coach at East High, has been football and track coach since 1938. In that length of time he has had one championship in football and second place for four years. As track mentor, he has had three seconds, a first in the Big Six, and his boys romped home with the first-place trophy in the Big Seven this year. He is considered by other coaches as one of the most sportsmanlike in the city. Coach Gene Sebastian, former graduate and athletic star of East, returned to his Alma Mater to coach the 1947 basketball team. His 1948 team just missed the interscholastic championship. Coach Les Fields is the man behind the 1, 2, 3, 4” of the gym classes and athletic squads. He lays the groundwork for those outstanding teams. Mr. W. S. Esther is the efficient business manager of the athletic department. He organizes contests for the sale of tickets. 23 The Big Four appear to be well pleased with the season. Since health plays such an important role in school life and future life, it is necessary that schools prepare all students for a healthful existence. The Girls’ Physical Education department endeavors to accomplish this through the presentation of scientific knowledge, through games, exercise and the development of skills. The department is under the capable direction of Miss Marion Storms and Mrs. Lucille Hensley. Basketball games are always exciting. 28 _y$f ter- )clioo( Activities 2) euelop f- hyiical jJ itneSA Sportsdays are important in the activities of the year. This group is composed of the home room presidents. These student representatives are chosen for their scholastic ability and leadership. Many important problems are solved by this body. This year the council brought to East, its first exchange assembly, which featured talent from other high schools in the city. After many attempts to obtain mirrors, this council successfully had them installed in both the boys’ and girls’ rest rooms. One hundred dollars was given to the Band Uniform Fund. They succeeded in having night mixers for both the football and basketball teams. Top Row: Swartz, Stewart, Holbrook, Bullard, Hollansworth, Peuster, Paris, Clinkenbeard, House. This new constitution was voted on and passed by the home rooms and Council on March 8, 1948. For the first time this year, the Council meetings were held on school time. All told, the Council supported school mixers, activities and projects. East was proud to have the president of its Council the first semester, Dorsey Johnston, elected to the Vice-presidency of the All-City Student Council. Charles Moore, the president of the second semester, carried on the good work. Mr. John Dix, Mr. Clayton Dickson, and Miss Anna Stewart were the capable faculty advisers this year. .... officers'. It has meant long hours of work for all, but if it pleases the readers, it has well been worth it. The lithographing process has been an experiment in the production of our book, and we hope that it meets with your approval. Johnny Hamilton has been the talented and hard-working editor-in chief. His untiring effort and responsibility have made the book possible. Joanne Mauk, art editor, contributed the colorful and amusing drawings running through the book. Jim McNamara supervised the writing of copy, and Betty Halcombe was the efficient business manager. Miss Virginia Welch was the adviser, and Miss Minnie Baker supervised the business staff. Mr. W. M. Grube was the photographer. J. H. Flucke has been a familiar figure with his Johnny Hollansworth, Joanne Mauk, Johnny Hamilton, Jim McNamara, camera on the Echo and Eastonian Staffs. and Evelyn Redmon, tackle the problems. Will this year's cover compare with those you have in your hands, Johnny?” We hope so! Two of the old faithfuls” hard at work on the layouts. Dale Karr and Jim Elle-man are responsible for many of the attractive pages. The book must be financially sound, judging by the happy expressions of John Hamilton, editor-in-chief, and Betty Halcombe, business manager. Shirley Whitmore spent much time at her typewriter. If there is any fixed star in our Constitutional constellation, it is that no one can prescribe what is orthodox thinking in politics, religion or other matters of opinion. Librarians have a proud tradition in maintaining this freedom. It is their job to keep available books and periodicals of all shades of opinion so that all may continue to be educated and open-minded. During Book Week in November the library and the Echo staff carried on a well-organized contest encouraging each student to obtain a library card and check out a book. Joanne Mauk has been a star” reporter on the Echo for the Library news during the year. Her column bas kept the school informed on the activities in the library and her drawings in the school paper during book week won an honorable mention in the National Library Contest. Miss Sarah Bower is the branch librarian. She is assisted by Mrs. Hazel Marie Peek. Miss Helen Hitt is in charge of the Children’s room and she is assisted by Mrs. Carolyn Crabb. 92 We CoJJn'lZbo At The Dessert Counter: Clare Etta Mye s, Ruth Perry, Viola Dooley, Lola Mullins, Martha Mullins, Dorothy Hill, Claudia Dalton, Kathryn Roberts, Florence Hoe and Irene Jones.
