A year in the twilight as juniors then they found themselves lords of the Lipper spacesf they were seniors at last. The toil of three long years in obscurity had produced the cherished reward. The seniors have reason to be proud of their achievements. The scholarship of many has been very high. The senior play, URuth in :L Rush, was well received and was a credit to the cast and di- rector. Not content with having won the interclass basket ball title, the seniors furnished the captain for the state championship court team. The orator representing East made such a good showing in Convention Hall that one judge ranked her first. Seniors and under classnien have mingled at school functions, where a fine spirit of fellowship has been engendered. The school mixers have been a source of pleasure and a place where students could become better acquainted. The graduating class sincerely hopes that it has followed the high standard of sportsmanship and good will established by the preceding classes. and wishes to acknowledge the many favors shown its members during the past school years. 1351 E astouia Tl 1929 Senior Play Cast Manx., , Fiinr! The senior play, Ruth In a Rushf' was presented in the school auditorium the evenings of April 26 and 27. Ruth Stout portrayed' the title role appropriately, while Earl Neal played the opposite role equally well. Although the cast was made up of amateurs, each member deserves credit for playing his part con- vincingly. The play, a comedy by Lindsey Barbee, centers around Ruth, a young heiress who tries to evade her social duties by becoming secretary to Gilbert Lansing, a writer. She intends, also, to do some writing herself. Complications ensue when the young heiress meets Gilbert Lansing ineognito. Finally all these complexities are cleared and she becomes his permanent secretary. The cast was as follows: MRS. BROWNELI., Ruflfs Amit ....... , ..,...... According to custom, three one-act plays constituted the presen- tation. This year the plays given were f'The Proposal Under Diffi- culties, by john K. Bangs, The Merry, Merry Cuckoo. by -lean- ette Marks, and The Maker of Dreams, by Uliphant Down. The members of the casts, selected from the expression depart- ment. played their parts effectively. OUTBURST The Outburstn is undoubtedly the biggest and best supported school entertainment of the year. On account of the limited seating capacity of our auditorium, this event is held two consecutive nights, and it has the reputation of entertaining equally large crowds at both performances. Aside from being a glorious social affair, it is the chief financial resource of the school. Here students and parents respond equally to the veritable holi- day spirit. A stranger, attending his first Outburst,,' might at first finds difficulty in adjusting himself to the hilarity and jollity of his surroundings. However, such a stranger would certainly find diffi- culty in maintaining his worldly dignity among so much whole- hearted mirth, and would soon inevitably find himself becoming a part of that jolly, carefree crowd, ' The chief event of the evening is the main show, a pleasing combination of scholastic humor and artg following which side-shows of every type lure the merry-makers up and down the corridors and into those rooms to which, at other times, most of that same crowd would move with great reluctance, -73- Eclstullfuu .wad -QMQCH I ?'l FI I 111111 1,2 IN ls Fx ,J ,. as ,aa xr. -ww- 15tI.Yf0IIiUlI Eaxtouiuu 141311 'ii ?'cf.'4'! f'. 'l'herc are many acltieventents that fill us with pride: but there is one achievement that we vicu not only with pride but with rever- ence and awe, an achievement that stands so far above the other accomplishments of our nation, indeed. the aceoinplislnnents of any nation, that it will remain permanent, endur- ing. to the end of time. That achievement, my friends. is the Constitution of the lfnited States! Since the adoption of our Constitution the American citizen has enjoyed its privileges, but has he met fully the duties accompany- ing these privileges? As we look about us and observe the violation of law and prev- alence of crime everywhere, we are forced to admit that, in some way, some of us have failed in the discharge of our duties as American citizens, have lapsed into a mo- mentary forgetfulness of the vital impor- tance of a clean, conscientious, law-abiding citizenry to a nation's progress and welfare. lf we will to obey our Constitution, it is imperative that we turn from our errors with a stronger and greater determination to fulfill our destiny as the leading nation of the world. The rights of the American citizen are inviolableg they may never be taken from him. Ile has the right at all times to freedom of assembly and petition, freedom of the press. freedom of speech, and freedom of religion. His house is his castle, free from unwarranted molestation. If, at any time, he is charged with any offense, no matter how great or small, he will not be compelled to testify against himself, but shall have the right to fair trial by jury with witnesses and counsel for defense, These are sacred rights, And, perhaps most im- portant of all, the American citizen has a voice in his government, the right to vote. Think of it! Freedom of action, thought, and conscience! Priceless Liberty! The heritage of battles fought on the blood- stained fields of Runnymede, Yorktown, Yerdtnll words from the pens of history's inightiest statesmeng words from the lips of immortal poets and orators: all have toiled and labored that man might have his in- alienable rights, Xvllo can fail to give rccoguiti in to the constitution as the object and fulfillment of the ceaseless search of the ages for liberty: and in giving recog- nition. who can iail to honor those heroes 4 i lndependence llall, who made it possible through their foresigltt, for us, as American citizens, to lead in that fulfillment? -lin balance the rights and the privileges ul the t'onstitution, there are certain duties devolving upon the citizen, ln a sellsf. these are not only duties but privileges also? for the performance of these duties permits tis constantly to express our gratitude for the benefits that come daily to us, because of this, our Constitution. And yet, how few of tis feel this, how few indeed, give recognition at all, to these definite duties resting upon usl The true American citizen is law-abiding. He obeys not only the several laws coming within his convenience, but all those under which he has occasion to act, Did every man feel this sacred duty to his Constitu- tion, as well as to his God, our beloved country would not be in its present condition, a situation fast becoming alarming. The solution to this probem is observance of law, VVC have forgotten that our nation's very reason for existence is law enforce- ment, that it is just as important to defend the Constitution at home, as it is the flag abroad! Three and a half million an- swered the call to arms of our nation in her hour of need. How many of us today are willing to answer that same call for preservation, not only by defending, but obeying her laws? The need is even more urgent! Law observance depends not alone upon the Government, for the Constitution is the lawg not alone upon the officials, they can but punish, the offeuseg not alone upon the mass, it is irresponsibleg but upon the indi- vidual, upon yon! If only we might realize that we, American citizens, are paying the price of lawlessness. Recent investigation has shown that the cost of crime would be sufficient to maintain all the educational in- stitutions in America. XVe are paying, not only in money, my friends, but in heart- aches, in the needless loss of life caused by crime! XVe must not stop at personal observance of law after we attain it but must strive through otir example to aid those about us in becoming the type of citizens that is most helpful to the nation. If, through bettering ourselves, we have influenced others to bet- ter actions. then we have truly made ma- terial progress towaril our goal of ideal citizenship. Thus in our lives as American Citizens, we find a balanced status: on the one hand, privileges, on the other, duties: the one, a guaranty of our Freedom, the other, an obli- gation to uphold the law which grants us that Freedom. Sometime in the future may we come to the realization, that only through the indi- vidual duties as the corollary of individual privileges, only through his seeking and final ascent to the higher and lnore ideal estate of pure citizenry, can this, our Con- stitution of the United States. reach its grandest, noblest, and most glorious ful- fillment as the guiding power nf the hap- oiest nation on Cod! earth! -Ruth Stout. -37- liczxmzliulz 1929 - I- fx em OIKBHRSI 1 WEE' if?
