East has always had an outstan- ding yearbook. l am confident this years book will follow the pattern of portraying all of the fine contributions that are made by the students and faculty of East. We are fortunate to be associated with a school that has made great contributions to students who in turn have made or are making significant and worthwhile contributions to society in a variety of ways. Vadal W. Peterson Assistant Principal It is yearbook time again, a time to remember the excellence of East High, the great student body, and the promise that East holds for the future. As you progress from this moment make East High an even finer school to remember. Orla Bell Assistant Principal Who are those helpful people standing behind the counter in the Iunchroom? Well they are the unnoticed and often unthanked folk who daily - rain or shine - dish out your lunch. What's more they keep the cafeteria clean and running smoothly. Many teachers start to burn out or give up at this point. Many become skeptical and begin to think that the younger generation isn't what previous young people have been. In the past months I have thought seriously about this. I teach or remain in teaching because I learn so much. This generation has new and vital inter- pretations of even the old things we read. I am sure I never fail to learn something new from every class which graduates from East High School. Personally, young people are a lifeline to energy which flows from them to me and revitalizes everything I do. Many people have questioned me regarding the endless energy I radiate. It is simply a reflection of the zest and vigor I acquire from my students. They are like the sun with endless sources of energy, I am like the moon soaking up and reflecting whatever I can of the abundant source. When I stop having faith and confidence in the younger generation, I shall stop having faith and confidence in myself. D. L. Many of them are unique to East High School, as they have been establish- ed inthe memory of outstanding teachers and students of East. The Christensen-Hewlett Memorial Cup was donated by the students of East High after the 1963 automobile accident which took the lives of Flemming Christensen and Lin Hewlett, two of East's finest athletes. Each year, the cup is engraved with the name of the senior athlete who has shown outstanding leadership, athletic, and citizenship ability, and this year the student selected for the honor was lohn Taylor. Shannon White was selected for the Robert M. Hunsaker Memorial, which was established by Mrs. Bertha Hunsaker in memory of her son, Robert for his outstanding participation on the varsity basketball team. Dan Bramall was awarded the Eric Hoff memorial for his excellent track record. Established after Miss Lorraine Bowman, an East High vocal teacher, was killed in a 1969 automobile accident, the Lorraine Bowman Memorial Scholarship is a two hundred dollar cash award to the outstanding vocal student. This year, Melou Stewart was selected for the award. Tao Kwan-Gett was selected this year for the Baush-Lomb award, a science award which automatically qualifies the recipient to apply for one of the five University of Rochester Scholarships. Missing Tao Sheng Kwan Gett Bausch Lomb Award SOCIETY Tutoring can be a very rewarding experience for both the one being tutored and the tutor. You may not think you know enough to help these students. What you don't realize is that sometimes only a little help is needed. I was quite anxious myself at the beginn- ing, but when l realized how much I learned from tutoring a Vietnamese girl named Phan, the anxieties disappeared. Helping Phan with her geometry helped refresh my memory for tests such as the ACT, the SAT, and the Achievement Tests. LEUPARD The Leopard has a tradition of excellence in accurately covering and reporting the news. This years staff, by their involvement in school activities and outside sources, kept the student body informed. Co-Editors Miriam Harper and Erin McShane, Sports Editor Dave Crowder, Business Manager loe Cheever, and Photographer Mark Hols- tein, put in many hours of hard work to come up with a newspaper in final form. However, the staff credits much of this success to their printer, Dale, and to Sponsor Mary Stevens. 'Q Mary Stevens Advisor Erin McShane - Co-Editor Dave Crowder - Sports Editor PENCILINGS Pencilings is the product of the efforts of many people, including the work of its industrious staff, the talented writers and artists who contribute to the magazine, and the graphics personnel who print it up, combining all of the ideas into a single reality. By working with Pencilings, one learns for at least learns what it's like to try to learnl the meanings of the words creativity, energy, and financial capability. The magazine is positive proof that the only prerequisite for an excellent publication is a group of people who are willing to devote some of their time and talent. Pencilings remains indebted to all of those who have contributed to its crea- tion, and is especially thankful for the support and guidance of Mr. lack Christensen and the faculty and ad- ministration at East. The staff, for instance, spent long hours correcting the student address and phone number records to insure accuracy. This however, was not the only factor that contributed to the staffs success, for each page was carefully typed into a computer, printed page by page and then checked again for erros. The staff also edited certain sections, cutting out some of the un- necessary pages. Though it was frighting to produce and print a direc- tory so differently, the staff never- theless, forged ahead and produced an excellent directory. SYMPHONY DRCHESTRA T The Symphony Orchestra experienced an exciting year under their new director, Mr. Raino. This year they were one of the strongest competitors in Region and State. The topic for the debaters, 'Resolve that the federal government should establish minimum education standards for elementary and secondary schools, provided an interesting and controversial topic, appropriate for our changing society when educa- tion is being examined so critically. ln February the teams made a memorable squad trip to Tempe, Arizona to compete at Temp's annual tournament and concluded the year with a debate banquet with the traditional slide show and lllast will and testa- ment given by the varsity members. The Silver State Invitational Rifle Match was in March. Finally, in April, the junior Gallery was held. Our Rifle Team placed number one in the past years and con- tinued their tradition of excellence throughout this year as well. DRILL TEAM Our Drill Team has, in the past, en- joyed bringing home championship trophies from within the state and Reno, Nevada. Meanwhile, the l.V. team was working hard under the guidance of Kim Buckalew and Greg Woodring, shaping up the freshman! sophomore team. With a total of 27 players on the three teams, there was an outstanding turnout for the freshman class which will be an asset as the team is losing an excellent group of seniors. Starting seniors included Babs Wangsgaard, Debbie Watson, Kobi Gwinn, lanene Monson, Melanie Harker, and Susanne Winslow. They will all be missed. lt was also a thrill for us to play our matches in the new fieldhouse. But the men curbed that anxiety with even more determination. Though losing a few early season games by a mere 1 or 2 points, the players and the fans kept up the Leopard spirit, and it was that spirit that kept the team going. With a new defense midseason, Big Red pulled itself up and barely missed making state by 1 game. Unfortunately many of these sports which are completely ignored deserve much more attention than this. The ar- chery team defended their title forthe fifth time in a row in the annual state tournament held in May. This compe- tent team boasts eight high caliber members, Susan Coller, Steve Gas, Mike Kent, john Oestreich, Paul Oestreich, Michael Pananos, Marie Wangsgard, and Eric Wilson. These members added a lot to make this year a success for archery. HOCKEY An energetic lr. Varsity hockey team took state this year with the Varsity team placing fourth. Varsity was defeated by Highland, however, gave the best showing any other team had. i 1 Q 160 ACTIVITIES REGISTRATIO At the advent of our return to 9 mon- ths of academic life was our Registration Day, The new llarena scheduling had harried students running from one table to another begging teachers to accept them into their classes. Last minute class changes were frantically made to fit courses in. Pre-Labor Day weekend scheduling made it impossible for many students to register on time resulting in several days of rescheduling. t yrs- Lf, 'M .... ,.,,,....uv f- S 5 . 2 . l l lil . The backbone of the staff: Photographers Mike Wise, Mark Asper, Steve Siegel and Sean Christensen and others, no less did the same in printing and producing a number of pictures in the name of Eastonia 821 A special appreciation also goes towards Rick Asper for the developing and taking of the School Picture and the Block E on the table of contents page. Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black And the dark street winds and bends. Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And watch where the chalk-whited arrows go To the place where the sidewalk ends. Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go, For the children, they mark, and th e children, they know The place where the sidewalk ends. Shel Silverstein In Memory of: Aaron Hunt - Class of '82 December 11, 1963 to March 10, 1982 Sherri Lee Giles - Class of '85 February 11, 1967 to April 9, 1982
