It is a well-known fact that our tradi- tional 12-year school, so largely adhered to in the northern part of the United States, came to us largely by accident about 100 years ago. However, one of the important purposes of the reorganiza- tion-economy of time-is in dangergof being lost sight of. European experiences and practices should serve at least to call our attention to the importance of a careful considera- tion of our longer preparatory courses. WVhy should German students, for in- stance, be about two years ahead of Amer- ican students in completing their profes- sional studies?
