Silll' Li'-lKG'S Revised EdlICafiOI1al PI'09.I'i':lI11 A reviscd educational program was put into operation in the city schools in 1925 which will make it possible for the major- ity of the young people who graduate from high school, to do so regularly in eleven years above the kindergarten. It is a well-known fact that our tradi- tional 12-year school, so largely adhered to in the northern part of the United States, came to us largely by accident about 100 years ago. The establishment of junior high schools during recent years is in a sense a protest against this old 12-' Gilbcll Riswulrl GEORGE A. EATON Assistant S1lP8'l'l7ltC11f!l611t of City Schools Gilbert Riswulzl GEORGE N. CHILD Superintencleut of City Schools year system and it has already done much to remedy some of the major evils of the traditional organization. However, one of the important purposes of the reorganiza- tion-economy of time-is in dangergof being lost sight of. European experiences and practices should serve at least to call our attention to the importance of a careful considera- tion of our longer preparatory courses. WVhy should German students, for in- stance, be about two years ahead of Amer- ican students in completing their profes- sional studies? The explanation is to be found in our traditional school organiza- tion and not in any lack of learning power or achievement of our young people. ---l'f.r1lmct from article by Geo. N. Child.
