. ,K V2 'Q . Ei ' S -.1 William H. Davenport, Principal of East High School Music is the theme of the 1958 Yearbook. A happy choice! Among all the fine arts music is the one to which everyone is exposed daily. Students at East have always been encouraged to develop an appreciation for good music. Good music like fine literature should appeal to the noble emotionsg it should aid us in our quest for the good, the true and the beautiful. Music is not fine art because it was composed centuries ago, nor is it worthless because it be- longs to the modern age. Many young people think that parents and teachers condemn all modern music. This is far from the truth. Some modern compositions are excellentg many more are representative of the age in which we live and are enjoyableg a few are combinations of rhythmic noise and ghoulish howls. Do not be prejudiced against any particular type of music. Listen with an open mind and a receptive heart. Accept what appeals to your sense of the good, the beautiful and the true.

This is the day of high fidelity, engi- neered to capture the overtones, undertones and delicate in-between nuances of the hearing range. So too, has your education been designed to open broad vistas of knowledge - a fluency in the English languageg a study of the natural laws of science and mathematicsg an apprecia- tion of our heritage through the social studiesg familiarity with music, art and commerce. C, Q-it Robert J. Rentz, Assistant principal of East High School Robert C. McGowan, Assistant principal of East High School Every person has two educations in life, the one he receives from others and the one he gives to himself. Home, church and school pro- vide the formerg experience supplies the latter. Graduation is a milestone. How well a person has applied himself will determine the measure of success or failure in the education of life. Congratulations, Seniors of 1958.
