First, we shall introduce to you our conductors and the members of the symphony. You will hear, individually, the strings, the woodwinds, the brass, and the percussion after which the various sections of the orchestra will join in concert. It will be a broad, sweeping concert - a combination of the contrasting melodies and rhythms reflected in our lives at East. It will range from the conscious dignity of classical music to the relaxed ease of rock and roll. Now we invite you to enjoy the East High Pops presented by the Eastonian staff of 1958. Marie A. Wendling DEDIC TIO To Marie A. Wendling -- teacher, advisor, friend -- whose efforts in our behalf have reached beyond the classroom to instill in us an appreciation of the true values of education and of life, this yearbook is gratefully and affectionately dedicated. Conductor Without a conductor, an orchestra cannot be a unified whole. Here at East High School we have many maestros who strive untiringly, day after day, to bring forth from their musi- cians perfectly balanced, harmonious performances. As the house lights dim and our conductors step into the spotlight, there is a burst of appreciative applause for those who, seemingly miraculously, draw music from an orchestra composed of unskilled musicians. Among all the fine arts music is the one to which everyone is exposed daily. Students at East have always been encouraged to develop an appreciation for good music. Good music like fine literature should appeal to the noble emotionsg it should aid us in our quest for the good, the true and the beautiful. Music is not fine art because it was composed centuries ago, nor is it worthless because it be- longs to the modern age. Many young people think that parents and teachers condemn all modern music. This is far from the truth. Some modern compositions are excellentg many more are representative of the age in which we live and are enjoyableg a few are combinations of rhythmic noise and ghoulish howls. Do not be prejudiced against any particular type of music. Listen with an open mind and a receptive heart. Accept what appeals to your sense of the good, the beautiful and the true. This is the day of high fidelity, engi- neered to capture the overtones, undertones and delicate in-between nuances of the hearing range. So too, has your education been designed to open broad vistas of knowledge - a fluency in the English languageg a study of the natural laws of science and mathematicsg an apprecia- tion of our heritage through the social studiesg familiarity with music, art and commerce. C, Q-it Robert J. Rentz, Assistant principal of East High School Robert C. McGowan, Assistant principal of East High School Every person has two educations in life, the one he receives from others and the one he gives to himself. Home, church and school pro- vide the formerg experience supplies the latter. Graduation is a milestone. How well a person has applied himself will determine the measure of success or failure in the education of life. Coming to our school from Fosdick-Masten in 1954, she speed- ily became here, as she had been there, a trusted instructor and guide. We have missed her all year and shall continue to do so, for she possessed rare quali- ties - integrity, love of her work, devot- ion to duty. Schumacher, Latin ln their climb to success the Juniors obtained happiness and fame. Now they have vacated their places to take over the helm and lead the school in future concerts. Meanwhile the Sophomores felt a new importance as they took their place in the school symphony. Abashed in the presence of Seniors, the Fresh- men felt the need of staying close to familiar things as they ventured through their first year as professional musicians. Reluctantly, the Seniors yielded their positions to seek wider horizons in the great orchestra of world affairs. h The Orchestra L AINE CI 1 4 U5 lvl' ' T3 I Patricia Holmon Secretarial Course Secretary Carrie Mae Brown College Entrance Science Vice-President William Horne Science Course President ,aff WX f o o I ,- Semor Class Offlcers if fl 1 Isaac Bolclen Parnee Elizabeth Martin -ts Gerald Albert Brown Science Course College Entrance Science ' College Entrance Engineering Treasurer Girls' Marshal Boys' Marshal The Seniors are the main strings in the orches- tra. The girls' marshal was Parnee Martin, and the boys' marshal was Gerald Brown. Other officers included the historian, Cordon Waehrer, and the prophets, Susan Brown and William jerge. The poet was Judith Boczarska and Mary Loveless was valedictorian. Senior day was held on June 6 in the afternoon. At this time gold pins were given to the students who had attained a place on the Honor Roll for four years. That same evening in the Twentieth Century Club, the Senior Prom was held with great success. On the twenty- fo1u'th of june in the school auditorium, the Seniors received their long-anticipated diplomas. The graduating class of 1958 has contributed greatly to the various activities and sports of East High School. It is sincerely hoped that the seats vacat- ed by these senior musicians will be filled in the coming year by just as eager and co-operative players in the great orchestra of the school. Sophomores The Sophomores are represented by the brass instruments. just as an orchestra would not be complete without this section, East would not seem right without Sophomores. At this year's Sophomore program on the theme of brotherhood, Joseph Caldarelli was master of ceremonies. The guest speaker was Father Cantillon. An essay, The Stereotype and Prejudice, written by Tommie lVlae,Lighfoot and Edith Cadlac, was read by Edith Cadlacg another essay, The stereotype Teenager, was read by james Foreman. Musical entertainment was provided by the orchestra, and a lovely piano solo, Autumn Leaves, was played by Aristida Boraczok. A concluding selection was given by a Sophomore chorus, consisting of fourteen girls. The Sophomores were truly represented in every activity throughout the year. 5 i . -.4.H nn...., First Row - P. I ' Iii QMS Freshmen The dictionary defines the percussion instrument as a musical instrument played by striking to produce expressive tones. This instrument is an example of East High's Fresh- men. Last September they made their entry into our great orchestra and began contributing to the cultural aspects of their school. They have displayed qualities of leadership in music, sports, and scholarship. Hertha Lamm and Doris Copeland led the Honor Roll with the highest averages in the first term. Many of the Freshmen contributed their musical talents to Freshmen Day program. All of their efferts have been inspiring and helpful to our school, and we feel that as Sophomores they will do even better. i Dear me, do they drown them tool Coming up from second lunch. The various instru- ments are introduced contrapuntally to effect a harmonious whole. Now the variations are introduced - the extra-curricu- lar activities which are an integral part of the harmony of the school day. Everyone can find something here which captures his fancy. There are organization meetings, plays, debates, publications, orchestra, and chorus. As the variations con- tinue, each musician is given the opportunity to display his special talents, then all join together in a Crescendo of achievement. ,a S .7 l K... fi .1 P KJ. - ,. 1? ,. at 1, J' ,.. 1 l .- . ,-I l'p s '- ' 'l:'. , .5 ,J '..,1 'I R61 ,- DJ, -.1 ,.-L 4,-. The Choir As usual, the choir, led by Miss H. Grossman, distinguished itself this year. At Christmas it provided background music for the pageant of the Dramatics Club and presented its own program of carols, accompanied by Ruth Carlington. Among the carols from many lands, their rendition of the Ukranian Carol of the Bells and the Austrian As Lately We Watched , as well as the traditional Noel Alleluia': will be long remembered. Always the choir is a joy to hear. Choraleers The singing in the assemblies was led by the Choraleers, a group of girls selected by Miss Grossman from her chorus classes. First Row - P. Ray, E. We remember especially the dash and verve of the tango, La Comparsitan, which had the students actually swaying in their seats. On the occa- sions of the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Days, the orchestra's interpretation of classical pieces was greatly appreciated. Walking through the corridors of East just before Christmas time, we heard the softly-flowing melodies of traditional carols. In one gaily decorated home-room after another, in the delicious smell ofthe cookies and candy given to the sich and needy by our language clubs, and even in the gay jingling of the newest fad - bells on long red ribbons - we were aware of the Christmas spirit. There is a change in tempo as the cheer- leaders and baton twirlers parade on stage to introduce our sports activis ties. The music is modern - marches, rock 'n roll, cha cha, Calypso, stroll. The audience leans forward in anticipation as rhythms suggest- ive of the sports arena are introduced. Each new tune calls to mind an event of the past season. The members of the audience become specta- tors as they review the sports calendar to the accompaniment of the orchestra. Here, for many, is the climax of the performance. X 2- QR Qflfig S l i l V M. Because of outstanding teamwork, East was the first school in this city to become a member of the National Cheer- leaders Association, entitling the girls to wear the official emblems. A portable amplifier now enables the voices of cheerleaders to carry throughout the auditorium and the grandstand. l wrist A Cross Country Walking down Humboldt Parkway in the fall, one might have seen the cross-country team at hard practice. Under the coaching of Mr. ll. Feucht, they started practicing in late August for their first meet. Led by Clarence Baker, john Barlow, and Herbert Mason, the team placed second in two meets and first in a later one. Although the cross-country team did not have as good a year as it had hoped, the experience gained augurs well for next year. The last mile Almost l End of the Cross Country Run Seated - S. In the past the victories of the football team have enabled East to keep possession of the Harvard Cup for many seasons. This year the team fought nobly and hard, but it did not win as many victories as it had in the past. Block letters were awarded to Ronald 1 Cassel, Donald Egleton, Melvin Gray, William Horne, William Moore, Michael Peoples, Fred Pla, Norman Simms, Peter Trigg, and Isaac Bolden, the manager. In addition, squad letters were awarded to Frank Barn- well, Autrey Carr, Earl Clarke, William Alexander, -gffafs' 4 . it 'Q Football in the snow. Jimmie Eads, Arthur Fletcher, james Grabowski, Ronald Ignasiak, Arthur Smith, and John Storey. Coaches Kalbfleisch and Brodzinsky created a fine team, one that displayed excellent sportsmanship both on and off the field. Next year our season will open up big, mighty, and strong. The drums will rear, the trumpets will toot, and the cymbals will clang as East goes after the Harvard Cup once more. 31, :Nxt ...Q du L fr- 51 .g'?f.-- ' I. 34.2, f.' ' 4f:'.f- ' .inf :-.-. - l -2. Clemie Hunter and Archie Carr tried the swift 40-yard free-style. The team was under the capable management of Legrande Hall, a former 200 man.
