A Roman scholar probably would not have labored quite as long over the conjugation of this famous romantic verb as do East High's first year Latin students, but, nevertheless, he might feel not too strange in some of our classes, for learning is learning in every place and time. It is the proud tradition of the academic subjects that they bridge the ages. However, our Roman visitor might be completely mys- tified at many of the subjects of our curriculumg for although East is an academic school, its program has been expanded to meet competently the special interests and aptitudes of each of its pupils. ass zn Latin Il

PARENT TEACHERS ASSOCIATION First Row Mrs Norman Dietrich Mrs Alvlnl Stuber Mrs Wm I Kath Mrs Maurice Mallott Russel Bymes Second Row Elijah Echols Ir Mrs Elllah Echols Mrs George Iohnston Mrs Russel Byrnes Mrs Harold Hoffman PARENTS AND TEACHERS PLAN FOR THE GOOD OF THE SCHOOL In October 1953 plans were developed for a Parent Teacher Association at East High Committees Davenport asked that the group yom the National Congress of Parents and Teachers only if after a year they had one hundred members The growth was difficult and slow but they succeeded ln fulfilling the requirement and had the CTISTIHCIIOYI of being the first P T A in Buffalo to join the national organlzation During its first year this SOCICTHS Parentum et Maglstorum was successful m getting new shades for our windows asked for re zoning of schools to achieve less crowded condltlons and purchased two new violins for the school The members have ardently supported every school function from our sports pro gram to our school play and concert Now they have asked for student representation on their executive board as they feel that to broaden the scope of their actlvxtles for the school they need student ideas and viewpoints Four members of the Student Council have been appointed to represent the student body on the Board In order to fulfill its real purpose as effectlvely as possible the PT A needs the constant co operation of every parent teacher and student Officers for 1954 1955 are president Mrs William Kath first v1ce president Mrs Maurlce Mallott second vlce president Mrs Norman Dietrich recording secretary Mrs Alvln Stuber corresponding secre tary Rev Elijah Echols Ir and treasurer Mr Russell Byrnes 7 1 yr W T ' were organized to draft the by-laws and start the wheels ln motion. 0 COMPUTE AND MEASURE- T0 UNDERSTAND THEIR WORLD Even though East's instructors do not employ the corporal inducement to study that was freely applied by the old Roman school masters, high standards are maintained and hard work is the criterion for any diploma that is granted. A general academic diploma is awarded for a three-unit sequence in one of the following fields: art, business subjects, languages, homemaking, industrial arts, mathematics, music, science. In addition to these sub- jects a student must sucessfully complete four years of English, three and one-half years of social studies, one-half year of health, and one year each of mathematics and science, if they are not a part of his selected course.
