A Roman scholar probably would not have labored quite as long over the conjugation of this famous romantic verb as do East High's first year Latin students, but, nevertheless, he might feel not too strange in some of our classes, for learning is learning in every place and time. It is the proud tradition of the academic subjects that they bridge the ages. However, our Roman visitor might be completely mys- tified at many of the subjects of our curriculumg for although East is an academic school, its program has been expanded to meet competently the special interests and aptitudes of each of its pupils. ass zn Latin Il 0 COMPUTE AND MEASURE- T0 UNDERSTAND THEIR WORLD Even though East's instructors do not employ the corporal inducement to study that was freely applied by the old Roman school masters, high standards are maintained and hard work is the criterion for any diploma that is granted. A general academic diploma is awarded for a three-unit sequence in one of the following fields: art, business subjects, languages, homemaking, industrial arts, mathematics, music, science. In addition to these sub- jects a student must sucessfully complete four years of English, three and one-half years of social studies, one-half year of health, and one year each of mathematics and science, if they are not a part of his selected course. The remainder of the sixteen units required for graduation can be chosen from a wide range of electives such as public speaking, eco- nomics, chorus, and radio. Added to these are many extracurricular activities from which a student may choose, as sports, clubs, debate and publications. A College Entrance Diploma is awarded for the completion of a language, science, or engi- neering course. The secretarial and business courses lead to Business Diplomas, while Homemaking, Music, Art and Industrial Arts Diplomas can be earned for concentration in those fields. A Class in Ph gg! FRESHMEN EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE o ann Left to Right C' Waehrer C Brown P lord C, Carmon S Kern E Tinch P Rayford TAKING THEIR PLACE IN ACTIVITIES AT EAST HIGH As we walk the streets of Rome we notice Roman children on their way to school On lflV9SElg8I1ng we find that they learn little from books They are sent to school chiefly to learn how to defend the state Roman schools have none of the EICIINIIICS we enyoy such is the assembly given by the class of 59 on Freshman Day November 24. At this assembly Gentre Garmon the class president introduced the other class officers. The vice-president was Patricia Lord' secretary Sharon Kern' treasurer Edgretto Tineh' boys marshal Gerald Brown' girls marshal Patricia Rayford. The program consisted of a talk by the guest speaker the Reverend George Steuernagle from St. oseph s Church' piano solos by Carol Meyers and Rose Gayles' vocal solos by Edgretto Tineh 'Vlarcia Davidowicz and Barbara Stewart' recitations by Margaret Pellnat and War- ren Stewart' readings by oseph Costello and Gordon Waehrcr' and a Ukrainian dance by Vera Bidna. The assembly was closed by the singing of Thanksgiving songs. Unlike the Roman children our freshmen learned much from books. This is proved by three freshmen who led the Honor Roll many times: Gordon Waeher Mary Loveless and Carrie Mae Brown. Another field in which the freshmen hate proved themselves capable is sports. Some plebes who made good progress were Michael Peoples in football: Robert Gilchrist in basketballg NValter Mohler and Gerald Brown in swimming. As we compare the school system in old Rome and twentieth century America. we freshmen realize how lucky we are. VVe also hope to remember to appreciate this in future years. 65 M 2 RLY SCR Once agam East Hlgh opens its doors to throngs of eager Romans ready to learn The first assembly welcomes the freshmen to the paths of higher education By now l5 000 separate cards have been wrrtten all w1th last name first East wrns its first football vxctory over South Park 7 6 Cross Country enthusiasts are rarmg to go Night owls further thelr educatlon as nlght school beglns October 12 our nation IS 453 years young a well deserved Roman hollday All High Cross Country meet Sink or swlm marks c ose The way those freshmen crowd on the Honor Roll hardly gxve a senlor a chance U N Program with films on Mexico and Thailand Teachers go to school pupils stay home-Teachers Convention Our parents VISII the school and meet the teachers Veterans honored ln Veterans Day assembly Fashion shovs such grace and gallantry Carol Santucx agam w1ns I Speak for Democracy contest Chromatlc Club ZIVQS an enyoyable performance Top Left Bob Relsch and Carol Santucl at UN Assembly Left Mary Ann and Bruce decorate cars for Motocade Below Left Lucille Elame and Fran ces smg cowboy melodies Below Senior glrl cheer leaders9'P Why they re Iohn Dxggle George and Bruce Left Can this be the football team that won the Harvard Cupooa 68 YEA 0LL .l. .gnu T '- sf T 1'.'P1'4 MCMLIV-MCMLV Tvso assemblles ln one day Talent Show glrls play football boys go to tea party Freshmen honored m Freshman Day assembly Pumpkln pxe anyone? EAST RUNS A GOOD RACE AT THE CIRCUS MAXIMUS On your mark - get set - bang! This cry was heard by our Oriental marathon runners as they started over the gruelling 2.9 mile course at Delaware Park. Although East High was not successful in winning the Columbia Cup this year, certainly East's runners carried the torch of good sportsmanship, fair play, and the ability to work together, into each meet in which they participated. Under Coach Harry Feucht our runners practiced faithfully and diligently on the Humboldt Parkway in preparation for their meets. The student body should appreciate the persistence and loyalty required to stick to the daily practice. without even applauding spectators to urge them on. In the preliminary runs, East was just barely shaded out of victory by such teams as McKinley, Technical, and Seneca. Although the Orientals did not finish in the top rank of the All-High meet, it can not be said that they did not give their all for the Blue and Gray. Lee Martin, a junior, made All-High for a second time by finishing third in the All-High meet. The other runners who comprised East's team at the All-High meet were as follows: Otis Goodwin, Iames Braceful, Bob Des Iardin, William McClurkin, Irving Harrell, Willie Ienkins, Clarence Shaw. W The team was efficiently managed by Bill Burgard. Q ' ' With high expectations for the future and a very talented squad return- H H ing, Mr. Feucht is looking to next year, in the hope that his team will bring ' Q the Columbia Cup back to East. - I U ' 1 J. T0 TRADITIONAL FEATS 0F STRENGTH AND SKILL With the coming of the robin to the green lawns of East, there also come excited young sports- men eager to hear the ping of a tennis ball hitting a new racket, the crack of the bat, and the loud bang as the starter fires his pistol. When our beloved Pop Ierge retired, the baseball team got a new coach, in the person of Mr. Sam Blumer. The team's stars were Bob Augusiewicz and Masten Fuller on the mound, Dan Kencik and Paul Dubiel behind the plate, Captain Bob Reisch, Ron Lang, Grover Freeland, and Paul Dubiel in the infield, and Bob Wistner, Ioe Lipinski, and Don Frantzen in the outfield. Coach George Kalbfleisch took over the track team in place of Mr. Ted Grenda. Under his leadership our championship team of 1954 again became the scourge of the Buffalo Public High Schools. The distance events were run by Lee Martin, Bob Des Iardin, and Irving Harrell. In the sprints we had lim Tolliver, lim Braceful, and Isaac Bolden. In the other events were George Iohn- son, Thomas Reed, Iohn Kralisz, Charles Thomas, Richard Cummings, and Russell Alexander. With only two remaining regulars from the championship tennis team of l954, Coach Dan- ford Byrens had to develop new talent, Bill Bur gard, Marvin Burzinski, and Donald Szkodzinski were the singles men. Dan Tatko and Larry Figu ra were our stars in the first doubles, with Igor Matuch and Don Pelowski representing East in the second doubles. Since the Eastonian must go to press before the spring sports season ends, we cannot report the final results. But as the season advances, the augurers report all omens favorable, with one laurel wreath in prospect. 101 SPORTS SEASON Left The squad xx atches during a tense moment Mxddle Left Georges car decorated for the Motorcade to the Bennett ame Lovser Left Wmners IH lntertlass basketball Flrst Rovs B Wllllams C Thompson Second Row T Reed T Wilson E Lowther Below Harvard Club presents football trophy whrle Mr Davenport and Mr K3lbH6lSCl'l watch FALL-WINTER-SPRING I pper Right Dan Terrana nears the goal Rlght Craceful Ixm Braneful comes m Belovs Freeland mes for a Jump shot Ive' ,J 3:.'7E 'J' at i i 'sl-E-.
