MGRAVE AND REVEREND SENIORS ARE MODEL FOR ALL OTHER CLASSES The seniors haven't had much chance to be dignified this year because of the delayed opening of schools. They've been rushed with the rest of the student body, sandwiching activities between classes and homework. A little later than usual. the class elected these oflicers: Francis P. Rozek, presi- dentg Carol Creasey, vice-president: Joseph Slisz, treasurerg ,lean Fetzer, secretary, Jeanette Petschke, girls' marshalg Walter Southall, boys' marshalg Carol Meyers, hisjtorian and Marven Smith. prophet. ln October the girls had a Hallowe'en Party complete with cats, costumes and cider. The most baffling disguise was that of Miss Lancaster -an extremely convincing Raggedy Ann. A post season basketball game between the Varsity '45 and Varsity '46 was sponsored by the seniors. The '46 Varsity won the exciting game with a score of 45 - 27: next season's team shows great promise. There was dancing afterward to the rhythm of the East High Swing Band. The boys acted as ushers at both the concert and the play, providing a friendly welcome and a needed assistance in locating seats. On .lune l. the social event of the year will be held -The Prom. lt is our earnest hope that the draft hoard will he lenient with the male members of the class until after that date. As they walk down the aisle at graduation, the senior class can look back on one of the shortest and busiest years in the history of East. Winners ol the Amerikanism Essay Contest: Mildred I6 Crochowihk and Richard Borowiec. THE C ASS 0F 945 .IEAN M. DENTON DOE IT AGAIN - CAPTURE PRE IDENCY FOR THIRD YEAR A junior can always be found with his or her finger in some pie, such as a play, a team, a cheer, a concert, an argument, or some other important happening. Yes, tomorrow's seniors are an important element in each school year. This year's crop is especially talented and has done much towards maintaining our high standard. Thirty-eight members of the class had high enough grades to become Omicron Alpha members. Our sports schedule would have been impossible without the husky juniors. Fifty-seven of them aided in its successes and failures alike. The juniors' achievements have been many and varied, with a marked accent in music. One hundred forty-four of them are members of the band, orchestra, or chorus. As the yearbook goes to press, nothing definite has been planned for Junior Day. We are only certain of the traditional tree planting and that their activities will center about Arbor Day. However, we know their carefree confidence will make everything they undertake a success. April eleventh marked the Junior elections and the following results: president, Gilbert Denton, vice-president, Irene Dennis, secretary, Romaine Oldstromg treasurer, Elmer Jung, girls' marshal, Norma Reed, boys' marshal, William Baumler. 34 Junior winners in the Civic Planning Essay Context. SUPER-SOPHS OFFER SUPER-PROGRAM The sophomore class of 194-5 claims the distinction of being one of East's most active groups, for it was well represented in every field open to its members. Besides a monthly average of fifty-one honor students, the percentage of sophomores in dramatic, music, sports, and other extra curricular activities has been commendable, while one boy has distinguished himself and his class by earning major letters in three sports, an almost unprecedented achievement for a sophomore. On Sophomore Day, February sixteenth, our hosts presented a delightful program which included selections by versatile musicians and speakers. The capable oflicers were Richard Cisek, president, Betty Brandon, vice-president, Bebe Whitehead, secretaryg lean Dehlinger, girls' marshal, and Ronald Nickbarg, boys' marshal. Together with their class they claim the honor of having introduced to East High School Dr. Frederick Arnold Young, an eminent lecturer who scored such a tre- mendous success with both the faculty and students that he was brought back a second time by demand. I If the present is indicative of the future, we prophesy an outstanding group of seniors for 1947. Our speaker, Dr. Young S7 SOPHOMORE GIRLS, ROOM 230-321-Row I: R. Voss, L. B. Smith, C. Furthermore, who but a freshman can make being an upperclassman something really special? Yes, they dash up down stairways, rush to class as if pursued and make all the quaint mistakes only a first year student is capable of, but we like them. The frehmen have proven themselves capable in various fields of endeavor for there are seven freshmen in the orchestra and band, three on the football squad and seventy-two on the honor roll. In December, on Friday the thirteenth, defying superstition, and gaily decked with holly, this year's freshmen had their day. It started with an assembly program. The class president, Donald Halicki, introduced the officers: vice-president, Camilla Huckerg treasurer, Ralph McQuireg secretary, Norman Anthony, girls' marshal, Rita Stec, and boys' marshal, Donald Dawson. There was a clarinet solo by Ferdinand Strojewski, a piano solo by Warren Jackson, and then a comedy motion picture entitled, Young America , starring Jane Withers. The day ended with a party in the gymnasium: a gay affair featuring jukebox music, dancing, and cider and doughnuts. Our freshmen had a rollicking good time and we hope that they like East as well as East likes them. Freshman Basketball-163: R. Bukolt, S. Petrucelli, C. Hertinger, P. Arnmini, B. Riedel, B. As an annual Christmas project, Mr. Costello suggested that East make a con- tribution to the March of Dimes. The plan was enthusiastically supported and the study rooms began to compete on a per capita basis. The rivalry between 200 and 34-0 reached a peak the morning the check was to be presented. The girls consistently on top till the boys set up a stock exchange. Constant bidding among the rows left some of the boys bankrupt but happy because 340 had won the lead. Two last minute collections by the girls after they had entered the assembly failed to put them in first place. After a Hnal flurry of figuring, Mr. Costello announced the results. You never saw a gloomier gathering of girls! ' Francis Francis, a polio victim and representative of 340, and Jeanette Petschke of 200, presented to Mr. Calvin, Chairman of the Buffalo and Erie County Chapter of the March of Dimes, a check for 81300. The select of this group are represented by Ehscoh, an organization whose members have two years of home economics to their credit. Miss Elsie Fulton is the clubis never tiring C.O. This year,s otiicers are Lois Oetinger, presidentg Helen Reig, vice-presidentg Helen Linder, secretary, ,loan Todtenhagen, assistant secretary, Mildred Uhteg, treasurer, and Shirley Gerber, assistant treasurer. Ehscoh rations its time among a number of worthy projects, in this way fulfilling its motto of Service to Othersf, The girls sponsor jolly parties and plan their work so it always becomes fun. This year a collection of shoes for refugee children was made, and at Christmas Ehscoh decked drab toys in gay little frocks as gifts for unfortunate children. These deeds and the club's spirit of fellowship have not gone unnoticed. Ehscoh has been invited to join the New York State Home Economics Association, an organization in which the girls will work with others who have similar interests. East's homemakers are always willing and anxious to undertake their projects and the enthusiasm with which they serve is typical of American youth. It'a only a nickel! These and similar expressions heard upon entering school on a cold January rnoming close to examinations indicate that Omicron Alpha has resumed its yearly activities. The reason for the sale of these examination schedule tags is to promote a scholarship fund from which Bfty dollars are awarded each year to the two students having the highest average for the year. Guided by Miss Ruth E. Pitt and Mis Mary Kenny, and led this year by Marven Smith, presidentg Jean Fetzer, vice-president, Leonore Schmitt, secretary, and Paul Gilbert, treasurer, the Honor Society was undaunted by the handicap of a short first term. The members held a successful tag day, initiation, spring dance and assembly program. Always a source of entertainment and enjoyment for all the members, except, perhaps those suffering initiation, the affair this year was managed by Alice Banaszak and her Shenanigan committee. Great fun! A dance sponsored by the society this spring helped to create new friendships and afforded the students and their friends a very delightful evening. The news letter sent to East's servicemen and women, this year entitled East Merry-Co-Round, has been the main project of the society for the past several years. Non-members as well as volunteers from the organization help to make the paper a cheerful and informative one for the recipients. Its purpose is to present items of interest and humor for the en oyment of its readers. East Merry-Co-Round is printed in columns and resembles a newspaper in its form and content. Since the Omicron Alpha receives its name from the Greek Oui Aristoi, which means the best, it is natural for the members to serve as models for the rest of the school. To prove that East is proud of those who have attained an honor roll, average five times in each of the four years of their course, a special award is given toithese students. May they always retain their principles and be respected by their fellow men! OMICRON ALPHA CN-Z1-D. Radon, M. Sens, H. Riley, S. Noworyta, D. Schwab, I. Schemmer, L. Pfeiffer, R. Repka, J. As the title indicates, the members wonder as they wander and why? - because Dr. Kumro encourages the practical application of their physiography course as they go on their various excursions. Their excursions are intellectual picnic-form trips to such interesting places as Niagara Falls, where besides exploring the gorge, viewing the whirlpool rapids, and being shown the location of the old gorge that was Hlled by a glacier, they saw the movie star, Franchot Tone. The Gypsum Mines at Clarence Center were another attraction to our Curious Onesf, After comin from the de ths of the mine where thev learned of its o eration, 8 P . P they were shown how plasterboard was made. The VVanderers', visited the Canisius College Observatory where they saw the seismographis recording to the japanese earthquake at its worst. The Easter vacation gave them an opportunity to go to the Weather Bureau at the airport where the club members investigated the workings of the radiosonde, a device which registers atmospheric pressure. humidity and temperature. The club has set up its own local weather bureau, which we ho me will im Jrove Buttalo's l l weather. Doo, Kumrrfs 'lgangi' have accepted the offers of geology and astronomy exhi- bitions at the Museum of Science as well as the use of the Kellogg Observatory which fascinated them greatly. Bell, J. Sciera, R. Andres. BECHT AND CAPUTI SPARK ORIENTAL ELEVEN This year, the Orientals did not enjoy a highly successful season, but from the viewpoint of a sport hard and cleanly fought, the season merited high regard. Operating from either the T or Box formation, the Orientals, under the excellent tutelage of Coach Jim Peale, defeated the ever-dangerous teams from South Park and Technical High, while dropping bitterly fought contests to Kensington, Bennett, Seneca and Burgard. Through the entire season, the team was spearheaded by the outstanding play of Quarterback Bob Becht. He not only proved himself to be an excellent field general but also proved his ability to elude tacklers, and ran off with the individual scoring crown of the league. A great aid to Bob Becht's scoring accomplishments were the devastating blocks thrown by left halfback Robert Bell, many of which paved the way clear to the goal line and to victory for our Alma Mater. John Sciera, who shouldered the kicking and passing responsibility, and Ed Gorney, who alternated with Don McMinn. rounded out the backfield which so cleverly and precisely engineered plays developed by Coach Peele. Mike Caputi, who captained the team this year. and Robert Bingel, held down the guard positions. Captain Caputi was regarded as the best offensive and defensive guard of the Harvard Cup Series and Robert Bingel was without question the hardest working man on the squad. For their outstanding play, Capt. Caputi and Robert Becht were selected for the All-High Team. Veterans Russ Andrus and Bob Lipinczyk. end and tackle respectively, played their positions in a never say die spirit. Due credit must also be given to the fine play of Center Gene Cierzak. End Norbert Dombrowski and Tackle Paul Hager who alternated with Don Kreuzer. Whenever our boys got tired. the coach sent in the following players, all of whom received major letters: Charters. Mierzwa. lfpperlein. Shirley, Williams, Gibbs, Heidle, Gmerek, McCarthy, Schrutt and Dorobiala. This year's team was managed by the ever capable Charles Ziemer. 74 ,,,...: me .ii vw .., Q' 'iv-. i:?' ,.. ,-,NM CROSSCOUNTRY TEAM-R. Scott, Manager: D. J. Sheldon, E. Loth, C. L. Ketchum, R. OUR RUNNERS RUN RIV ALS RAGGED The Columbia Cross-Country Run, that gruelling grind around grand and gor- geous Delaware Park Lake, took place despite the late opening of schools this year. Although no preliminary meets were held and Coach Harry Feucht was at East only two days a week, our lusty runners placed fifth in the gala event. The squad was paced by Don Sheldon, a dynamic little speed demon, who kept the Blue and Gray in the limelight by capturing second place on the All-High Team. Don, a senior, led the pack most of the way but was beaten at the finish by only a few yards. Two juniors, Edwin Loth, Arthur Karrer and sophomores Arthur Wacz- kowski and Richard Cizek completed the Oriental swing quintet. These young harriers displayed speed and stamina, giving a good indication that the coveted cup will be returned to East next season. The other major-letter men were: George Hedden, Lawrence Ketchum, Vincent Jazedzinski, John Burke, Richard Michalski and Robert Scott, manager. These boys with the others, form a strong nucleus for next year, and it can truly be said that they derived a great deal from the sport. They not only profited by physical development but also enjoyed the fraternal atmosphere of the team, gaining invaluable guidance and advice from their pal and coach, Mr. Feucht. 75 BASKETBALL TEAM-Row I: J. Coach Harry Feucht molded a squad of green hoopsters into a combination that gave all adversaries a run for their ball game. The Orientals, tied for league leadership during the first few weeks, dropped several games by one or two points in mid-season but came surging back to trounce arch-rival .Kensington 45 to 36 and defeat second place Seneca by five points. The only veteran was captain Don McMinn who led the team in scoring and achieved honorable mention on the All-High Team. Six foot-three center, Walter Southall, also received this recognition for his excellent play in the pivot spot as well as his work under the backboards. Robert Vogel's accurate pop shots made him a constant threat as he tallied with many buckets Gerald Heidenburg and Arthur Waczkowski, two keen, aggressive players with zestful competitive spirit, rounded out the starting quintet. A young freshman, Bob Reidel, proved to be a good shot and displayed a great deal of basketball sense as he finished fifth in scoring. The following capable reserves were awarded major letters: Gerald Braun, Norbert Dombrowski, Wfayne Gibbs, Francis Gmerek, and Joseph Slisz. Richard Thurston was an efficient and reliable manager. 76 W --M--K.-. .,..,--,,.v.. . mi f V 1 rm, ' fu. V K gi 1 T ' fi' , . ws- if im., - V SWIMIYIING TEAlVliEdge of Pool: A. Jeziorski, A. Four muscular mermen step up to the pool's edge. The starter's voice again rings out: Get set. The swimmers tighten every muscle in anticipation of the next sound. Bang, barks the starter's gun. A split second of silence followed by the cheers and jeers of the spectators sigznihes the beginning of the meet. Scenes like this are fresh in the memory of all the rabid swim fans who pack. the pool balcony in order to witness first hand the stellar feats of our mermen. Although forced to start the season a month late because of the acute coal shortage, Coach Dan Byrens had a great opportunity to mold his unseasoned squad into a team comparable to that of any in the city. Sparked by Captain Marve Smith. who came through with his second All-High berth, the aggressive East High showed plenty of spark and vigor in walking 05 with two out of three impressive victories during the curtailed season. Moreover, on all-high day. East captured fourth spot in the rankings. The other major lettermen were Ray Borowski. I-fd Corney. Yvilliam Beagle, Richard Bialecki, Richard Czerwinski. Leslie Edmunds. This year's cheer-leading sextet did its howlin, best to support the gray and blue - support it with the same old Rick-a-shaw, the same growling Gr-r-r Fight and the same rhythmic Victory Yell that you used to cheer to, despite the encountering of curtailed assemblies and shuffled sport schedules. East's five as well as its 'gelevenv were encouraged at rally-assemblies and at the games. Many an assembly was saved from the clutches of Morpheus when our upeppy peppers sprang to the front with their rousing cheers and songs. Who are these peppy peppers, these megaphone twirling live wires, these vanguards of the fighting Gray and Blue? None other than Senior Franklin Beck, Juniors Frederick Carner and Joseph Maguire, Sophomores Charles Brind'Amour and Freshmen Harold Epstein and Henry Slisz. ' Whether at the grid or at the court the Oriental steam roller would be iii serious straits were it not for these vital spark plugs. lt is they, with their traditional gyrations, that make the Oriental Chant rise above all others. 10,91 1-'Na+ F QUIZ?-U . Every day after school, signs of it can be found everywhere. ,logging wearily around the school each day are the tracksters, pitching madly in the schoolyard can be seen our baseball team, and in the gym, the tennis squad can be found swatting tennis balls violently against the wall. We are all looking forward to the opening of the spring sports season when our fighting teams will be out to do their usual best. The versatile Mr. Feucht, now handling the baseball team with his customary precision and skill, is busy molding his patchy squad into a strong offensive team. With ,lohn Krieger, Fran Gmerek, John Long, Wayne Gibbs, Fran Zawodzincki and Dick Bauer back from last yearis team, the Orientals should be set for a better than usual season. Spearheaded by Captain Bob Vogel, who has received All-High mention for the past three years, the tennis team can look forward to a good season. Mr. Byrens has hopes that his aggregation, almost all experienced lettermen. will bring the tennis cup back to East. With Mr. Schreiber, the new track coach here but two days a week, it will be the honest efforts of each member of the track team that will decide its ultimate fate. Such holdovers as Don Sheldon, Bob Bell and .lohn Sciera, combining with the rookie talent, will let the other schools know and feel the power of East track teams. 79 TRACK TEAM-Row I: D. Kruezer, V. One glance into the gymnasium on those days gives proof enough that the weaker sex of East High is well repre- sented in the competitive games of tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton, and baseball. Oh, what a tangled stroke we weave, when first our tennis racquets cleave! - the lament of Miss Schwenger's enthusiastic but amateur tennis throng. But every girl leaves the tennis instruction with some lesson gained, least of all that - tennis is a game of reach. ' 37 The most tumultuous period of the girls' sports season occurs when Mrs. Johnson's volleyball and Miss Schwengeris basketball groups share the gym. Although the sliding doors divide the two games physically, nothing can sever the fusion of vocal instruction. The most popular of the activities is the social dancing classes. Then the boys are allowed to enter and learn varied dance steps under the adept supervision of Mrs. Johnson. These are the times that try men's soles. The girls of East are fortunate to have such a fine sports program. During the hectic days when they gather to participate in the after school sports they make many fine friendships and best of all acquire a knowledge of fair play and a zest for it. 81 FRESHMAN GIRLS' SPORTS Row Ig R, Yuurlg.
