What about the bright-eyed little starlets adding a note of excitement in the play, the ambitious performers presenting their own assembly program, the brilliant minds that glorify their classes, the tiny young cheerleaders supplying an extra pitch of enthusiasm, and the growing muscles tensioned on a high key to bring home a trophy and a title? The juniors and seniors alone do not compose the school Qthough they may think soj nor do they reign alone as masters of activities. From the freshman ranks, Robert Oswald came to the front as Simeon, the inn- keepers son in the Christmas Play. Sophomores Donald Hareski, playing the part of a shepherd, and jane Goldberg also gave fine performances. A series of special programs offered the freshman and sophomores a chance to appear in assemblies, the Lincoln's Day, Washington's Day and the Constitution Day presentations. Conducting the Washington Day program was Samuel Reingvartz, who introduced the other freshmen in the program, A biographical sketch by Evelyn Dams, Harold Rubens, and Alfreda Zaydell opened the program. Ronald Baetzhold then read the maxims of Washington, and james Edwards gave excerpts from the Iizrezziell Addreif Following a trumpet solo Hail Colnnzbia by Richird Mauer Mary Orlando L., ll UH llll H If YN HI ll Ill I lllll ll 1 ll ll ll I l 00 l P geTla1v15 ezcvz ' .. 7 , , 2 1 7 ' Y - - 1 Q V Q . n 1 A ' 1 LJ, F limi- lifts: t'XYhu K 1-ix- ioiitvstririts. -pi-:ikciw :il ilu- XY:r-liiiiutfui lhiy 1-i'uur:mi: lv:-'ri' rwfru: xxiiirwrs in tht XX hu lxiirm- cont:-st, tresl an girl suiinmm: cli.ii1'i-rwi l lair: Sulmluxski, uinnivig team in NUYYIU S 'ls ii -to J, a -l er cl a -ii t-ai 1 snr in -ng lieslingin lnvjs iroin Ronin lol. Robert XY'iedemann presented a poem on Wash- ington, which was succeeded by .1 gavotte danced by a group of eight. in which the underclassmen were Alice Lempke and Shirley Schmidt. In two other programs did the underclassmen take part. On Constitution Day Victor WolkodoH, Marvin Pleskow, Norma Hajek. as well as the following freshmen, Dorothy Beagle, Florence Lastowska, josephine Ternullo, and XX'illiam Gleason. took part. ln their own quiz program on March 26, called XWho Knows as suggested by Eleanor Hollands, ten boys and ten girls, chosen by elimination contests, were pitted against each other in two types of questions, true or false and direct information. The first of these was won by Emily Brzeski and Jerome Bojay. Amassing the greatest number of points were Eileen Hoctor and jerry Breinin. Unwilling to yield to the condescending upperclassmen, the freshmen and sopho- mores rank high in the honor scale. Edward O'Brien and Marvin Pleskow, sophomores, and Naomi Harris, freshman, vied with each other for top honors. Besides this, two freshmen, Robert Oswald in swimming and Robert Schmukal in baseball, won their major letters. 7111111 , . t 1 , ii f - i 4 C lfit-llinm ligrnrl .nn-l l i't'-lvinari o:'clii-tra 71 r -6 Ag HI I 1 M Llllllll ILHQI HXIH ll Lheerleaders C 1151 zo R1c11a Racka Gr r hght To the accompanlment of thexe str1n11 HOLIHC1lf1ig expremons 1151 H1511 sL11001 studentx Que 1 nt to XOL11 1111111 1es11t1on ot 111111 1111001 gpmt Xxltll s111h 1111111 uplort ll IS of httle wonder t at I 1515 1ooth1ll 131S1xC'1bll1 11111 11111111 1111111 17fOUKL1l1 home 111611 trophmw thxs 1e1r 1 11111 1ss1111h1y 11 11111 111111 1111 11111111 111111 11116 present 15176111111 thc hrst 111111 ll 1111 11111 C IXIL 81111111111 111111 1os111111 N11xt111 11111 l1'1r the Q11dII'lI7lOI1S1llP 1011 1111111111 on 11llf1hS2,,lXll'leL D15 1111r11111 1111 11Ll4111 of 1111 16111 01 11st s 11111r11111cr C 1711011 111 111C x1r1o11s 811100 LIILLVS XNLTL L115 111111 hy 111111111 mmors 111111111 on 1111 S11Oll11LfS ot 111111 1l111r ALfO15l1l1 1111111 11111 1111 1111111111 for11 spr1xxl1ng 1n thc .111 1111 1011111111 1111 1318111117111 111 s 1r1J111 H11t1I1 1111ro11111111 1 xtrlnlgc 1lc1111n' II1 11111r X1 10 1111 11111 1 11111 1n1 1 1111111 x1h11p1r for 1111 oppox1111, tc1m Both 1ontcr111e w 1111111111 11111 too 1111111 1111111111 to 1111 11111111111 11111 1111111 1 1 LK 1 11 1111 lllflll 111 Sllw 11 1 1 IN 1 ll 1 1 IL 1111 or 1 IL 1 1 11111 1s111l1 x1llNll1 1,1LN1x0XK 81111111 r 1' ns X 11 1x1 JL so 11 xx 111 1111 111 xx st11 IS x 0 111 111 11111 1111 11 111 11511 11 11111111111 ot 131111 11 1 1x11111ru lflllli IL-1111111 Ilavcrkx. 101115 2111111 rki. l11111g 1'-ll11t'IlliHX. How music charmed the poet may be unknown, but here at East, these are the things that charm us. Originality of presentation, perfection in timing, sincerity and depth in playing are the salient characteristics that mark our musical organizations. All these were com- bined, when in gorgeous array, as befitting the October football season, the band led a throng of over two thousand students and spectators in a long parade to East's tirst combat at the Civic Stadium. Wfaving blue and gray school pennants in time to the music and singing football songs to the baton of Mr. Raszaja, the gay enthusiasts marched to their opening game. And thereafter in rain, sleet, or snow fand sunshine tooj, the band could, as always, be depended upon to add pep arid incentive to the games. At Christmastide, wafted up to classes with the piny fragrance of the Christmas tree were strains of Silent Niqiil. Put into practice. this consists in making and repairing equip- ment for the Home Economics department and the cafeteria. Fulfilling the club aims also are the frequent meetings and parties. In the fall, white-clad girls interpreted the symbolic significance of the vari-colored tapers they carried as they circled around the Spirit of Home Economics presiding over their im- pressive Rainbow Ceremony. Santa Llaus is a twin! So it seems. since there were two of the jolly fellows. one from each pole, at the Christmas party. Hilarity again struck the keynote in the joint party of Ilhscoh and Omega C-hi Sigma on St. Patricks Day. Hines. the Orient Philatelic bocietyr- Stamp Club to youf---this year celebrated its tenth anniversary. The office of presidency was left vacant when Edward Rusin was obliged to leave School because of illness. The other othcers were George Selmensberger, vice-presidentg Frances Wierzbicki. secretaryg Edward Oliver, treasurer. Every first and third Friday of the month, Room 103 became a buzzing center of activity as enterprising young members hartered for valued stamps. At these assemblages ringing discussions of the latest stamp news were followed by the reading of articles from stamp magazines. The club. majoring in American commemorative stamps. was particularly interested in the XVill Rogers memorial issue and in Vforldis Fair stamps. Many members specialized in sport stamps. while securing new stamps and nrst day covers occupied others. In April when Mr. Auer, .1 well-known stamp authority, addressed the club, the members had the rare privilege of seeing his stamp display and hearing him discuss his unusual finds. An exhibition of the Buffalo Stamp Club at the Hotel Statler late in May proved 1 source of inv iluihle iid to the young philatelists i i it i nr lllix ' . ' ' 'L t ' . Basketball As part of an exceedingly successful winter sports campaign, the East High basket- ball team fought back precedent to win the Yale Cup, token of high school basketball supremacy, for the first time in the history of the school. The cup was shared with Hutchinson, who finished in a tie with the Orientals. Mr. Henry jerge, who had previously coached everything from baseball to hockey, made his initial attempt to tutor a group of hoopsters. The proof of his versatility is clearly shown by his record. Highlights of the seasons campaign were brought forth in the Lafayette game, in which the East basketeers poured leather through the nets to chalk up sixty-three points, and in the Hutch game in which l2ast's fighting team handed the Hutchinson quintet their first defeat in thirty-nine games. liasts only defeat was felt at the hands of Masten. Standouts for the team were Captain Henry Ratajczak. leading scorer in the league, and Ted Bojanowski, both of whom received All-High recognition. Israel Newman, Robert Vogel, and Edward Sury also played brilliant basketball. Other lettermen were Earl Vogt, Carl Gruber, Donald Schaab, Casimir Sawicki, Raymond Plewacki and Vladimir Vlolkodofi who managed the team 1 Nun I I Ri hiil N hut an x cry, c 1 aiu xx i P151 Strturi V , . 7 . , , A , ' Iwi! init' iltll ti- rightl: l-mm-l Nix-.'n:iii, Rf-lir'i't Youll. llenry Ratitjrfiik, Iieilfly Iiiijziiimxskf lfrlnraril ,q,..iiiil ing,-3 Ylguliiiiii' XY-ilkomlotf. Cross-Country nor but Out ten Though this year the East High cross-country team did not finish at the top, near the top, still opposing teams have a perennial fear of our boys. Down, not out may well be the motto of the Oriental harriers. Coach Harry Feucht did a man-sized job with the skeleton squad which came for the team, After weeks of tedious training, Coach Feucht picked his team of stout-hearted and sturdy-legged youths. In the first preliminary meet, Lafayette, Hutchinson and South Park all romped- home in front of the Oriental runners. In the second meet, Fosdick-Masten and Lafayette again, both showed their heels to our boys. In the Columbia Cup run over a two and one-half course in Delaware Park, harriers from nine schools scurried over hill and dale, and when the dust had cleared away, East High was seventh, one place better than last year. Edward Knott, Walter Cazmark, Leonard Amborski, Robert Schieder, William Schaefer, Alfred Sciupider, Chester Adamczyk, Richard Downey and Manager Henry Bembenesta all received major letters for their efforts. Tennis Show them no mercyf was the battle cry of the East High tennis team this season. After linishing second to Lafayette by one point last year. the raquetteers were out to mow down the opposition with a vengeance and win the Park Llub trophy. To help accomplish this feat. Coach Danforcl Byrens had several veterans who chased the bouncing ball last year. Among these were two singles players and four doubles players. including lidward Strzyzewski, All-High number one man last year and Niagara Frontier junior singles champion. Several newcomers gave the veterans real competition for the team positions. After having several matches postponed, the nimble netmen got underway with .1 5-0 victory over a newly formed Kensington aggregation. The tennis tactics con- tinued in the second match as the tenniseers trounced Riverside in a like manner. In the match against South Park, the Orientals kept in stride by downing the Southsiders, 5-0. Bennett offered considerably more resistance but were subdued by superior marksman- ship, 3-2. The personnel of the team consisted of Edward Strzyzewski, hrst singlesg Fred Wurster, second singlesg XXfilliam Ulrich, third singlesg Rudolph Grandits and Walter Iranczylt hrst doubles and bigmund Zobel and ohn Doerr second doubles Willitria Ulrich also served is manager Q. In the fall 168 feminine athletes responded to the call for captain-ball. The rudi- ments of the game learned, teams were formed. Team II, captained by Alice Ninmer, and Team V, headed by Irene Doberstein, were the major teams. In an attempt to promote leadership, Mrs. Mina johnson appointed referees who supervised each game. The soft staccato of leather being thrown and caught announced the opening of the basketball season, coached by Miss Bertha Schwenger. Victors after competitive elimination of the contestants in the achievement tests of basket shooting, free-shots, passing, and throwing were Grace Ninmer and Aline Paczynska. In the cool soothing waters of the pool, East's mermaids found a pleasant release from the strain of mental exertion. During after-school practice many obtained swim- mers' buttons, while others of the more experienced group became the proud recipients of life-saving badges. A special entertainment planned by Miss Muriel Payne was a series of races in which ean Kurtz and Marion Bath vvcre finally recognized as champions FIRI S SPORTS SPNIURS rr!
