The 1968 Birch Log signifies the time when school is once again drawing to a close for another year. The memories chronicled within these covers will be of lasting value to each student who has attended East High. lt is my hope that your memories of the school year are pleasant and that the school has been able to serve you in a significant way toward the course you have set for yourself. As the years go by you will be amazed at the number of times this book will rekindle the memories of those events which are now written into the history of East High 1967- 68. The American public school is historically an extension of the home. lt is also a democratic social organization to aid individuals to adapt themselves to harmonized living, provide adequate vocational and professional training, and an attempt to instill in them a sense of social and moral responsibility. Instruction is the purpose of the schools, organization and the process of administration growing form the diverse demands, is only a means, not an end in achieving in- structional objectives. Administration is essentially a serv- ice activity, a tool through which the fundamental objec- tives of the educational process may be more fully and efficiently realized. With this point of view, it is obvious that the teacher becomes the most important agent, with the administration in the position of helping in every which way to increase the effectiveness of the teaching process. lVluch time, effort, and thought is put daily into this basic concept. lf it is possible to produce the proper conditions, materials, and give the proper consideration, the teaching process will become more effective. 8
