John Fitzgerald Kennedy, a great and good presi- dent, the friend of all people of good will, a believer in the dignity and equality of all human beings, a fighter for iustice, an apostle of peace, has been snatched from our midst by the bullet of an as- sassin . . . Our nation is bereaved. The whole world is poorer because of his loss. But we can all be better Ameri- cans because John Fitzgerald Kennedy has passed our way, because he has been our chosen leader at a time in history when his character, his vision, and his quiet courage have enabled him to chart a course for us, a safe course for us, through the shoals of treacherous seas that encompass the world. And now that he is relieved of the almost super- human burden that we imposed on him, may he rest in peace. -Chief Justice Earl Warren We in this country, in this generation, are-by destiny rather than choice-the watchmen on the walls of world freedom. We ask therefore that we may be worthy of our power and responsibility-that we may exercise our strength with wisdom and restraint-and that we may achieve in our time and for all time the ancient vision of peace on earth, goodwill to men. That must always be our goal-and the righteousness of our cause must always underlie our strength. Or, as was written long ago: Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. -John Fitzgerald Kennedy Soft, here a nation mourns, here, half in death, Half life, the atoms ioin in sorrow's song. Behold their sum, the mass devoid of breath, Inanimate-yet waxing superstrong. Look, here the mighty people kneel in prayer Before a face, an image growing dim. This one they seek-this one for whom they care- Where shall they look to rediscover him? This man is flown from them. ls he above, Or with them, silent, waiting to ascend? Can he be found here, comforting his love? What man his whereabouts can comprehend? None, none can find him now. His life has gone To freedom mortals never look upon. -Margaret Cooper
