Again another year is drawing to a close, but for me this has been more than iust another year. Not only has it been my last year in High School, but one I shall never forget as I spent it as a student in a wonderful country and at a great school-East High. Thank you iust can't convey the feelings and gratitudes I wish to extend to everyone of you who has made this year what it has been for me. I came to Duluth not really knowing what to expect and from the tirst moment I was greeted by a wonderful family-the John Adams family and the warmth and kindness of the student body at East. I have had so many unforgettable experiences and I have learned and seen so much here in America that a list would be impossible. I have learned, besides many Im- material things, howto love fine people and a fine coun- try which has come to mean practically as much to me as my home land of New Zealand. In this age of ever increasing speed and technology, I feel a true understanding of other countries and their people is essential to world peace. This is the aim of the A.F.S. program. I do hope that I have given you an in- sight to my country and the life we lead there. I have been so happy and proud to have been a member of East High. When I return home I will certainly share with the people my life in the United States and here in Duluth and tell them how people everywhere whatever race, religion or nationality are usually the same and how we all have the same fears, aspiration and ambitions. You will remain forever with me-May God bless you all. JWWW There is a lot more to the little country known as Holland than tulips, windmills, dykes and wooden shoes, and I shall never forget the exciting time I had last summer discovering this. Living with a Dutch family, I had the opportunity to learn a great deal about their customs and entire way of life, and I hope that I can pass on to others some of the similarities and differences I noticed between our two countries. I hope, too, that I was able to give my Dutch family a little better idea of our American way of life. As an A.F.S. student, I came to realize how very important it is for people from all over the world to walk together and talk to- gether, as the A.F.S. motto says, if we are ever to truly under- stand each other. 23
