Captain Mitchell T. W. MITCHELL, PRINCIPAL 'fDulu-th, located at the head of the largest body of fresh water in the world, is a natural port, iust as our school trains and educates our young men and women in the ways of vocation and in the ideals of citizenship and government. Many kinds of vessels ply the harbor, iust as many kinds of students come to our school. The ships must have a wheelsman to steer a straight course, a navigator to plot the course, and an engineer to keep the power under control. Just as the ship uses many instruments for its operation, among which are a radar screen, a compass and gyroscope, the school uses a counselor for personal guidance and tests to measure abilities and interests to help students End suitable vocations. School life offers many opportunities for growth and development in academic and in extra-curricular areas. It will measure abilities and discover interests and it will recommend vocations to those who seek help. The main objective of the school is to train and prepare our students for the future. The amount of training and personal development of any one person is contingent upon his own ability to receive this training and to develop and grow in situations which are similar to those of everyday life. Just as our boats come and go, so do our students and staFf, each one contributing a definite part to the maturity and growth of our school and community. The strength of the teacher, the school planning, and the student will reflect itself in the growth of a great nation as we live and work together at home, yet furnishing world leadership where it is needed. 8

First Mate Goerz KARL GOERZ, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL A busy lite is led by Ivlr. Karl Goerz, our assistant principal. His typical school day starts by taking care ot the attendance checks and absence reports. He also serves as a counselor with parents, students, and teachers concerning guidance or discipline. Active in school organizations, he serves as the adviser ot the Junior High Student Council. Mr. Goerz ar- ranges the school social activities, seating charts for the school assem- blies, and helps with the caps and gowns tor graduation, Navigator Bitt VICTOR BITTNER, COUNSELOR Have you any questions about jobs, colleges, or scholarships? Mr. Victor Bittner, in his tirst year as East's counselor, will answer these guestions. Mr. Bittner helps the stu- dents vvith their problems and assists them in their vocational and educa- tional plans. Among his many ac- tivities are administrating the school testing program, planning home- room guidance, and advising the Senior High Student Council. During the year he takes an active part in various research proi- ects, such as correlating the correct- ness of A. C. E., high school rank, and Cooperative English tests with students' success, and keeping a record ot all East alumni. nel'
