STUDENT COUNCIL Students of East practise Democracy in every day living through their elected representatives, the Student Council, composed of representatives elected by the twenty-four homerooms. The Council meets every Tuesday during activity period to assist in the management of the school. Under the able leadership of its advisor, Mr. Peter P. Zimmerman, and its officers, Jim Waldo, president, Ralph Cunningham, vice-president, Sally Parish, secretary, the Council directed a number of successful activities during the year. At the annual Recognition Day program, the Council awarded certificates of office to 240 students who were serving the school in many different ways. The Christmas toy drive was very successful this year-over l,20O toys were collected to be repaired and distributed to less fortunate children. ln February the Council organized two Winter Frolics on the school rink, one for the seventh and eighth grades and one for the ninth and tenth grades. Participating in the city-wide Student Council convention in March, representatives from our Council presented a discussion on the Honor Point System. A magazine sub- scription drive to raise money for the school was directed by the Council iust before Easter. At the close of school, gold, silver, and bronze E pins were presented to those students who had earned them in extra-curricular activities of the school. 5 L We 7161967222 STUDENT DIRECTORS Row 1: Mari Max Tomlinson, Barbara Young, Gail Halverson, Kay White, Ed William, Dale Johnson, Jerry Cohen, Franklin Elevitch, Leslie Shiapro, Roger Landgren. That comes up about a dozen times a month for the Birch Bark and its staff. Little is known about the inside and unseen work of the Birch Bark, so in these few paragraphs you are going to be told some of the main facts. The News Page is used to tell about assemblies, con- certs, and other events which happen in school and in the city. The editorial page has editorials on holidays, equip- ment, and'facilities the city or school needs. Last but not least are the few articles on gossip which arouse much interest around the school. The feature page has an article on the popular boy and girl of the month, Here and There. Special features on the third page this year were Meet the Faculty and inter- views of great preformers who come to Duluth. The sports page gives the homeroom intramural sports and the main sports events. This certainly fits this year's Birch Log Staff. ln September, every staff member racked his brain for ideas for the annual. After an idea was decided on, our busy editor drew up the dummy with the advisor, Mr. Jones. To open the subscription campaign, the solicitors met to discuss the plans. Everyday each solicitor visited his assigned homeroom and collected subscription money. The homerooms with IOOWL or more received a 10 cent refund for each subscriber. A reward movie, Babes in ToyIand, was shown to all subscribers. At last the long awaited individual pictures arrived. Every available member of the staff was put to work cutting and identifying pictures. For three feverish days the staff worked with the photographer in taking pictures. In the midst of their other activities the staff sponsored an all school Valentine Dance and much of their time was spent in decorating the cafeteria. Lonnie Sandborn and his band furnished the music. Securing ads, proofreading copy, and mounting pic- tures took the balance of the time. As April lst was the deadline for all the writeups, everyone scrambled to meet it. Finally, when the Annual was off to the printers everyone relaxed with a sigh of relief. A-I BAND Strutting their flashy new red and gray uniforms about town, the East High A-l Band brings to a close an eventful year. During the year the band has taken an active part in the activities here and in the community. The band gave two splendid concerts under the able direction of Mr. Vickers this season, one on December 3, and another, the Band Festival, on April l. The latter was a combined con- cert of the three bands, the A-l Band, A-2 Band, and B Band. The proceeds went to buy ten additional uniforms. The assistance of the Band Parents club did much to make the Festival a success. Some of the pieces presented at the concert were The Barber of SeviIIe, Victor Herbert's Favorites, Military Escort, and The Student Prince. Away from school, the A-l band played at the Lions Club and Scottish Rite. Participating in the Miss America, Boy and Girl Week, and Memorial Day parades and the Music Festival was a thrilling experience for the 67 members. Formed from members of the band was the German Band which played at assemblies, the Scottish Rite, the Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, and the Talent Show. Also or- ganized was a Pep band which played at pep assemblies and games. A ORCHESTRA A visit to 224, the orchestra room, finds exciting re- hearsals going on at all times under Mr. Berg's capable direction. Perhaps the A and B orchestra is busily re- hearsing for a coming concert: or the ensemble club is preparing to play at one of it's many appearances, or maybe they are planning an exchange program with another high school, or practising for the anxiously awaited Music Festival. Friday, the lst of December, was the date of the first highlight in the orchestra's busy year. lt was a concert held at East, with both orchestras, the seventh, and the ninth ensembles all participating. Etta Gillelland, accom- panied by her sister, played a cello solo and a novelty number, The Cat and the Fiddle narrated by Tom John- son were the highlights of the program. Another concert was held on April 29, which featured Mary Wilson at the harp, Lynette Olson, who sang a solo, and Elizabeth Alspach, a cellist. There was a wide variety of music ranging from Haydn to Tschaikawsky. The Music Festival, held every May in the Armory, is an annual program sponsored by the Minnesota High School Music League in which all Duluth Senior and Junior High Schools participate. East's orchestra always does a good iob and this year did exceptionally well. All in all, the orchestras have had an unusually busy year with a lot of fun and experience too. ENSEMBLE CLUB The Ensemble Club of East has achieved city-wide fame this year through thirty-two outstanding entertain- ment performances for leading civic organizations. These included performances for the Community Fund Drive, church suppers, school assemblies, plays and programs, as well as the school operetta and the May Music Festival, where the Ensemble excelled in competition. At these performances, the string group presented light classical and musical comedy selections, many of which are favorites with music lovers. Under the splendid guidance of Mr. Clifford Berg, orchestra director, this string ensemble has progressed rapidly, receiving recognition for advanced musical ability and artistic performance as an entertainment group. Although only seven years old, the number of requests for the Ensemble Club's musical presentations gives evi- dence of its popularity. There are twenty-one members in the group this year, all of them being selected from the string section of the orchestra. The president is Margery Kimball, and the secretary-treasurer, Leilla Lonn. Through the hos- pitality ot Captain Corcoran and his daughter, Jose- phine, a large party of guests are on board to aid in the capture ofthe pirates, a squad of Policemen have been included, and to carry out the legal procedure, the Lord Chancellor has been taken along. Through some misunderstanding, the Captain has sailed without Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Ad- miralty, but the latter, with his Sisters, Cousins, and Aunts has succeeded in overtaking the ship in his official barge and has ioined the expedition. Contrary to the plans the pirates capture the ship and make the passengers all prisoners. With an even break of lO0 points equaling a l4.3 average per game, the captain, Wayne Peterson, lead the team in scoring and also breaking records set by former East students Buzz Bennett and Bob Evanson. Taking second in scoring honors is Frank St. Clair with 57 points. When East played Morgan Park, they went the limit when they hit 48 points, going over their opponents by 18. In this game alone, Wayne Peterson dropped in 22 points. In the first game that edged them out of the conference, the Greyhounds were forced into an overtime only to be nicked by one bucket, leaving the score at 48-46 in favor of Proctor. To make matters all the worse, they came back again losing by one bucket to Lincoln when the score stood at 26-24. The game in which East reigned supreme as far as the difference in point range was the East-Stowe game where our boys trampled over their game foes by a 27-point margin, the final tally- 37-IO. ln the last three years in which the team was coached by Mr. Williams, we were city Champs twice, we won in that period of time 23 games and lost only 3. Receiving their five-inch letters this year were: John Newstrom, Student Manager, Wayne Peterson, Captain, Frank St. Clair, Kent Henricksen, Smith Brookhart, Kern Lyon, Noble Sellwood, Bernard Rogers, John Hanson, Ray Quelland. Other players who were a great asset to the team but did not play long enough in games are: Louis LaCheck, John Wallberg, Donnie Snyder, Jim Broman, Charles Applequist, James Lake, Burt Schweiger, Lyle Anderson, Keith Henricksen, A mighty swell team and coach, we all agree. . GIRLS' SPORTS Realizing the value and enioying it immensely, the girls of East have cooperated in the physical fitness program and bring to a close another successful year of activity in the gym class, health education class, and team sports. Team sports which proved popular were soccer, speedball, basketball, softball, bowling and tennis. Many and varied activities in the gym class created a genuine interest in the pro- gram. Exercises for posture improvement included push-ups, sit-ups, and lifts. Using the apparatus, the girls learned to perform stunts on the ropes, rings, and poles. Square and modern dancing were also taught. The girls worked hard to pass physical fitness tests given in the spring. Representing East, girls competed in the city-wide skating races and the district tennis tournament. The fine skating of Nancy Dryke and Joyce Smith won the skating championship for East again this year. The tennis team, composed of Nancy Sundby and Mariorie Hanson, participated in the District 26 and the Boys' and Girls' Week tournament at Wheeler Field. Most of the sophomore girls worked hard for G.A.A. awards by participating in the different sports. This is an award of which any girl may be proud. While cramming the year full of sports and other activities the sophomore girls found time to beat the sophomore boys in both volleyball and bowling. - 30 INTRAMURAL SPORTS Presenting to the school this year one of the most hotly contested rounds of intramural sports in its history were the home room touchfootball teams, the basketball teams, and the hockey teams. Just to give a rough idea we will first enter the touchfootball ring. In the ninth grade round 314 took a hard beating in a three game series to Come out with the crown. At the bell the first of the eighth grade round robin was a fight that, as expected, led with a hard finish with 216 out punishing 306 to the tune of 18 to 0. For their first endeavor into the touchfootball ring the seventh grade teams slugged it out in the Corner to an almost draw. 204 came through over 213 with the slim margin of 6 points, the final score 12 to 6. lnthe next ring to our right we find the home room teams battling it out in basketball, 201 took on 206 only to defeat them by a score of 17 to 10. A slim margin separated the two eighth grade teams, only 3 points, 19 to 16. The seventh graders, not to be outdone came through with a semi- final game between 204 and 213 with only a one point margin, 3 to 2, with 213 the victors. 204, in the final game of the year, edged out their opponents 10 to 7. Hockey was as exciting in the third ring with 206 over 201. 219 eighth grade champs won a hard round. Also putting every- thing into it 314 won in their division. As a part of the physical fitness program here at East the seventh and eighth grade girls competed in volley- ball, basketball, and bowling. Keen rivalry and good sportsmanship were displayed at the elimination games played before and after school. Home room teams com- peted in each grade for the coveted Girls' Sports Banner. ln the seventh grade, home room 205, captained by Roberta Traub, won the volleyball championship, in the eighth grade the winner was home room 304, led by Beverly Alreck. After a strenuous series of games in basketball during the winter months home room 217, captained by Gretchen Oltmanns, and 304, led by Anita Lee, emerged as victors ofthe seventh and eighth grades. Exciting competition featured the ninth and tenth grade home room basketball and bowling seasons. Captained by Nancy Sundby, 313 won the tenth grade basketball championship over their close rival 317. Leading her teammates to victory, Leilla Lonn captured the ninth grade basketball championship for 305. In volleyball 317, cap- tained by Mary Ann Kelly, placed first while 305, led by Etta Gilleland, won in the ninth grade. Bowling honors for the year went to 317 whose captain was Carolyn David- son. In the ninth grade Bonnie Wallace and her teammates were the ninth grade bowling champs. Back row: Keith Hendrickson, Rodney Grundstrom, Fi-gm row: Lyle Anderson, Bob Strom, Charles McVaugh. ' LIFE CONTINUES IN THE EIGHTH GRADE Ah! The first day of school. It won't be long now and l'll be seeing all my old friends. Yup! The building is iust the same as it was last year . . . . . . Or is it? The outside will be the same but the inside will be very different as it will hold a lot more for me. A bigger program and more activities. This year l won't be lost either and l'll know my way around. Just think l'll have a chance to get on the school teams and to be a member of my homeroom squad. There'll be track, golf, hockey, football, basketball, baseball and swimming. Clubs will surely mean a lot this year. l'll know which ones will be more interesting to me. Boy, what a list! 9 l'll be in a higher band too, and I might get a chance to help the orchestra. How about the music festival? Will l ever have fun, then! ' lt'll be easier to get in the Speech Festival than last year. l know the competition l'm going to have and l'll work harder. Just think of all the iobs that will start opening up for me-stage crew, proiectionist, member of school paper or annual, storekeeper, hall monitor and others. Well here I am, all l have to do is make use ofa golden opportunity. Yes, l'm lucky to be an eighth grader. It was a beautiful day but I was rather bleary-eyed. Does everyone experi- ence the same feelings of butterHies in the tummy and insomnia the night before? We had a ride in the car to school so we didn't have to climb that long, long hill. Why couIdn't the school have been at the bottom of the hill instead of the top? The school, my school, East Junior High School! I was here at last and aren't you glad to have me? Well, nobody seemed to notice mel Everyone was rushing to and fro. We got shoved along with the crowd and finally arrived at our destination, the home room. Immediately we were burdened with a list of things we should and shouldn't do. Horrors! How could we ever remember all those rules? I recall that the first few days were rather hectic. But we were forgiven for coming late to class as we wentfout the wrong door in the locker room and ended up in the gym. Things settled down pretty well after that, although lthought l never would be able to tell which was the up stairs and which was the down stairs. But I'm a big girl now. Nothing disturbs me anymore and the teachers actually call me Jane now instead of Janet or Betty. And I do believe people are beginning to notice I live here too! The only thing that bothers me is this: twenty-five minutes for lunch doesn't give much time for visiting. You may laugh at those poor, helpless new students, but remember, you were young once yourself! Jane Lichtenheld REDDY KILOWATT Says . .
