Mr. Boyer Advisor DEBATE The East High debate team began a successful season by winning three first-place trophies early in the year. A first-place trophy was awarded for the Tri-State Debate Meet at Spirit Lake, another for the Lincoln Northeast Meet, and another for winning the City Championship over all other Sioux City schools. At the South Dakota University invitational tournament, the team scored eleven superior ratings and three excellent ratings and had a 5-3 win-loss record. This was one of the best show- ings made at the Dakota tournament. At the time of this printing, much lies ahead for the team. It is scheduled to compete in tournaments at Omaha, Nebraska, Wesleyan College, Coe College, Morningside College, Central High School, and the all-important state meet at Iowa City in April. The topic for debate this year is Resolved: That the United States should adopt the essen- tial features of the British system of education. The team also participates in original oratory, extemporaneous speaking, radio and TV speaking, and oral interpretation. Few realize the work that the debaters do and East High can well be proud of those who de- fend its honor by debating. With 3 minutes left. to play in the second half the Black Raiders scored the game winning T. D. Quarterback Mc Intyre faded and laced a perfect 17 yard peg to end Dickens on Ames' 2 yard line. On the next play fullback Davis drilled over his right guard, and, after taking the handoff from Mc Intyre, plunged over the goal line for the T. D. Dicken's placekick was wide. Inthe third quarter the Black Raiders again prevented the awakening Little Cyclones from scoring. In the next three dovsms guard Mungon, tackle Williams, a.nd center Spinkelink set the Cyclone's fullback Gammack and back Fain for a total loss of 15 yards. Be- cause the Raiders could not complete more than 2 out of 10 pass attempts, they had a difficult game. The Crusaders scored within the first three minutes as Conway ran 37 yards on a re- verse. However, in the fourth quarter, East shined as sophomore back Rehder drove for a 62 yard I a..f--- 'll gain. And on the next play, Pas made a fantastic slanting run for the width of the field, one of the longest in football history, for the tally. Also, Pratt's recovery of a Hupke fumble on East's 25 gave the Raiders a final chance with just four minutes to go. On the next play Rehder heavedapass to Heelan's 40 before a penalty set East back into its te r r it o r y . Jinxed again, Rehder's pass was intercepted, and East's hopes were finished. !?, f '11 H 93 , E As fl-'jcj 3:1 B O Zi U1 f 0 ' L. ' 1 3 Roger Morse Tom Wineinger John Hill Quarterback Guard Center EA T TOPPLES WATTERLO0 26-I4 In this thrilling game the Raiders walloped the Trojans for its second win of the sea.son. Within 2:23 East had scored--After guard Carl- son had interceped a Trojan threat, fleet Nash- leanas on a routine carry broke through the Waterloo line and easily outsprinted the Trojan safety on a remarkable 60 yard run. Davis ran for the extra point. However, Waterloo got back in the game with a recovery on East's 24. And, five plays later the Trojans scored on a jump pass and run into the end zone. After tally of the point, Waterloo had tied East 7-7. Scoring a T. D. and kick in the opening minute of the second quarter, the Trojans tempo- rarily held the lead. Then, the Raider's realizing the seriousness of the situation responded beau- tifully. Rehder laced the pigskin 23 yards to Fulton who ran for the tally unmolested. But, Rehder's pass attempt for the point was incom- plete. And, we still trailed. Nevertheless, in the fourth quarter the Raiders showedtheir colors. Rehder heaved two 16 yard scoring passes to Cutler and Gill. By placement Dickens added apoint on the first, but failed on the second. The Raider line of Cutler, Pratt, Mungon, Spinkelink, Carlson, Lorenger, and Grimoskas limited the Trojans to only 80 yards of rushing. Neither team failedto score in the first quarter. However, in the second Raider fullback Davis scrambled on a 11-yard runfor the T. D. Also, Dickens scored the extra point. Because the Raider stone wall defensefaltered momentarily when the Dodger's quarterback Hobbs played a sneak, he succeeded in plowing through from the one-yard line for the score. And, Hallaway tallied the point on a con- version. With the score knotted at 7 to 7 at inter- mission, the Raiders took the opening kickoff of the second half on their 20 and marched 80 yards for the winning score. The Raider's five minute control of the pig-skin was climaxed by a four yard plunge by Fulton for the score. Again, Dickens kicked the extra point. Although the Dodgers were strong, East's five-four defense was too much for them to launch an attack against. One scoring threat of Fort Dodge was ended in the last minutes of play as Raider Gill inter- cepted a Dodger pass on the East 29. Davis carried the ball 29 times and gained 188 yards. On the following kickoff, East's Rehder fumbled and Sioux Fall's Callahan recovered on the Raider 26. And, five plays later Callahan plunged over from the 2 for the T. D. Also, Scott booted the extra point. ln Cutler receives the pass the last few minutes East threatened as Cutler blockedaWashington punt on the Warrior 42 and ran to the 18 before being brought down behind by Callahan. However, East's big chance ended when Callahan intercepted a Rehder pass just before the gun sounded. With 2:38 left in the third quarter Callahan again came into play as he ended a 57 yard drive, scoring from the 4. Scott kicked the point. In the first quarter the Irish stars Clark and Mc Coy carried the ball with a 16-yard dash by McCoy to the East 18. With 35 seconds left of play, the Irish halfback Clark cracked over from the 2 yards to cap an Irish drive from their 26-yard line. Clark's attempt- ed carry for the extra point was smothered, making the score 6 to 0. In the second quarter Davis pounded out seven, five, and four yard gains for the Black Raiders. With less than 4 minutes remaining, Davis gets key offensive block East's quarterback Rehder streaked around his own left end on a keeper play for a 5-yard T. D. ramble. And, Dickens split the uprights to ma.ke it 7 to 6 East. After a pass interception and runback by Fulton that put East in possession on the Ca- thedral 5, the aggressive Raiders added their insurance touchdown. Davis took a handoff from Rehder and burst over the Cathedral middle into pay dirt. Again, Dickens' placement was good and it was East 14, Cathedral 6, with 3 minutes 30 seconds left in the contest. The Castlemen got possession on its 42 after a punt. With Piper's lacing to Birmingham's 35-yard pass and Limerick's contributing a 10-yarder around end, the Little Maroons drove to the 11. On the next play Central's back Gordon skirted endfor the T. D. However, the hapless Central- men lost the extra point as Swanson was stopped on his plunge. On the first play after the second-half kick- off, Danne pocketed Davis' fumble on East's 32. And, seven plays later fullback Swanson, com- pleting a 4-yard drive, crashed across to score. With Davis, Fulton, and Nashleanas running and Rehder's contributing a 10-yard run a.nd hitting Davis on a 24-yard screen pass, the Raiders marched75 yards after the next kickoff. And Davis, going the final yard, scored the tally. With Dickens' kick East was behind 12 to 7. ln the fourth quarter the Raiders took over on their 27 with 3:40 left of play. Taking charge, Rehder passed to Cutler and Fulton. Even as the clock had some 30 seconds and the Raiders had 17 yards to cover, the obstinate Eastmen fought their double enemy. Quarterback Rehder dropped back on a fake pass, darted around Central's right end and scampered into the end zone. Again Dickens scored on a placekick. Then Central tried to score on two desperation passes. How- ever, they failed on both with time expired. On the following kickoff, Yankton took the ball on its own 36 and on the next few plays moved it to the 45. And fullback Pulkrabek scampered 41 yards before being brought down on the East 14. Three plays later Lowe plunged over left tackle from the 4. And on the conversion, Lowe tried the other side of the line and tied it at 7-all. ln the third quarter, Lorenger recovered a Buck fumble on the 48. And a yardage loss put the ball on the East 48 before Rehder hit Nash- leanas onapass play to the Yankton 22. Fullback Davis then carried it to the 9 and Nashleanas moved it to the 3. On the next play it was Davis' turn again as he went in with the score. And Dickens' kick was good.
