True to form, our hand played at its best, and, as seen from the eyes of one of the many people, quote, Wfhis Saturday evening in Chicagois Soldier Field I had the pleasure of seeing and hearing the East High School Band of Sioux City perform for a crowd of over 70,000 people at the Music Festival. Sioux City has every reason to be proud of the East High Marching Band. Hats off to our band-they stole the show. Alvarez, P. Anderson, D. Anderson, S. Ashmore, J. Asmus, P. Austin, C. Baak, S. All squad mem- bers participated in Discussion, with Superior ratings awarded to Roger Johnsen, ,lean Mossberg, and Doug Stone, other East entrants receiving Ex- cellent ratings. Max Mclsarty received a Superior in Oral Reading, and two East High teams won six of eight rounds of debate. At the Mohawk Speech Meet held at Mason City, McLarty and Schanke rated high in extemporaneous speaking. At the Midwest Speech Meet, at Sioux Falls, East ranked fourth in total number of points earned. As the Annual goes to press, many events of the debate season are still in the future. There will be a district meet followed by the State Speech Finals at Iowa City at which East will compete in debate, Student Senate, television speaking, and probably in original oratory and current event speaking. Also on the spring schedule are exchange debates with nearby schools, and the spring oratory contest. After that, the debaters will turn to next year's question. e- t . W. 7. A ,pn . First row: D. The Eastmen ranked number eleven in the state in the final poll and posted a 5-2 record. The two set-backs came at the hands of Ames. mythical champions of Iowa, and Sioux Falls Washington. number one ranking team in Siouxland. The East High team, although riddled by gradua- tions and underrated by the experts, came up with an explosive running attack and a rock-rihhed de- fense. EAS HIWI3 56157 OPPUNENZ fcudefw Saying 4 Seaman East Highas torrid hoopsters posted an impressive I2-3 record for the l956-57 season, and probably would have made a clean sweep except for the fact that mid-year graduations ripped out the Raiders front line. Under the expert guidance of the new head mentor, Gale Stevens. the Raid- ers raced through ten straight wins and ranked first in Siouxland before graduation claimed four of the first six players. Even then, the rebuilt Orange- men performed well, winning two of the remaining five games. There were easy wins free from anxious moments, and there were breathless battles with such fine teams as Le Mars, Sioux Falls, and Spencer. Three teams. l.e Mars. Leeds, and Heelan, avenged earlier losses to East by downing the graduation crippled Raiders late in the season. The City Championship wasn't decided until the final game of the season when East surrendered the crown to a fired- up Crusader team. East Highls l956-57 team was one to be proud of. Vernon Worrell was a superior player . . . Bill Prescott, Lanny Godfrey, John Renn. and Jerry Thompson played outstanding ball, and the reserves who stepped into the brcach performed with spirit and determination. East High is proud of this fine group of boys and proud of the coaches who guided them. First row: P. Clare, J. Thompson, J. Cormany, J. Renn, W. Suter, R. Calvert. Second row: R. Phillips, L.
