Freshman Year A: The best way to review our last four years would be to start at the beginning. T: That's usually the best place to start. Our class began its adventures in this school on September 5, 1984. 8: WOW! It seems like only yesterday I was going crazy trying to find my homeroom, and I went even crazier after being lectured for two periods by my homeroom teacher on the rules of the school, and how our schedules were to be read, and how to use those stupid maps which didn't keep me from getting lost. A: Well, at least we got to eat lunch in the cafeteria. T: It was the first time the cafe served food in about three years. 8: The food they served the first day must have been the leftovers from that last lunch served three years before. Anyway, we lost the fifteen minute break because of lunch, and no more candy machines. Not to mention the fact that we had to stay in school twenty minutes longer until 1:30. A: Oh, stop complaining. After we had adjusted ourselves to high school life, most of us began to get involved in different sports and activities. T: Hey, the hockey team won the Hou-satonic Championship that year. 8: Yeah, that was great! A: Class officers weren't elected until the very end of January, right? T: Yes, and every time we tried to get a fundraiser off the ground, something would go wrong. 8: Hey, like the keychain factory that burnt down the day before we called them to place an order, and the beach towel company that wouldn't let us sell beach towels because it was too late in the year. Wow, some Freshman year. ART LIMONCELLI (President), STEVEN DEROSA (Vice-President), KIM MACDONALD (Secretary). Missing: Bill MCCORMICK (Treasurer), BARBARA SITTNICK (Historian). A: Let's move on to Sophomore year, shall we? T: Yes, that year we had to face new responsibilities and problems. 8: I guess you could call the addition of a seventh period and 1:45 dismissal problems. We also got stuck with an extra day of gym. Sophomore Year What gets me is they tried to buy us off by adding more sports like golf and tennis, and courses like guitar, keyboard, and computer this and computer that. A: The newspaper. The Comet, returned that year and was published by the newly formed journalism classes. T: The Media Center moved up to the second floor so that the new computer center could be housed in the basement. 8: Don't forget Hurricane Gloria, that % !. Boy, did she make a mess. Sure, she closed down school for a week, but we lost some of our April vacation, and had to stay here longer in June. A: East Haven celebrated its 200th birthday that year, and the high school celebrated its 50th. T: The Drama Club came back in full force that year with their production of M A S H. 8: At least we had some fundraisers that year, even if it was stuff like soap, Christmas ornaments, and beach towels. A: Most of us also ordered class rings in the spring. T: I guess it was a pretty active year. 8: Well the most important thing I learned that year was how to be a real Eastie. If there was something to be sold, I sold it. If there was a game or dance, I was there. OK, so maybe I didn't participate in every fundraiser or go to every game and dance— so what! JEFF LUZZI (Vice-President), JENNIFER SPADACENTA (Secretary), PETER BRANDI (President), VANESSA SEVERING (Historian), BILL MCCORMICK (Treasurer). A: We began our Junior year with a more confusing schedule printout, a new principal, and several changes. T: Passing time between classes increased from four to five minutes. 8: But that didn't keep some of us from being tardy. The tardy policy was even revised again and detentions were brought back. A: School spirit, though, did boom that year. T: We had in-school pep rallies and the Student Council was bigger Junior Year than ever. 8: That's because everyone just wanted to get out of class. A: Speak for yourself. T: A career center was created to help students plan for their future and it offered them different job opportunities. 8: I still don't know what I want to do with my life. A: I'm sure you'll know some day. Anyway, the Drama Club worked non-stop this year, presenting three plays: Barefoot in the Park, The Wizard of Oz, and West Side Story. T: We had some fundraisers throughout the year, including the sale of calendar towels and candy. 8: But I could count, just using my two hands, the number of people who participated in those fundraisers. A: We received class rings in October. Some of us tried to follow the tradition of having their rings turned (in our case) 88 times, and having the 88th person kiss you, but few reached this number or even bothered to keep count. T: Academically, ten students were chosen as Rotary Youths of the Month, sixteen were inducted into the National Honor Society, seven boys attended Boys' State, and two girls went to Girls' State. Of course, many of us got our first taste of SATs. 8: Don't forget about the Junior Prom on May 15th. What a night that was. 1 could tell some stories. You know, that night I- A: Uh, the hockey team had another great year winning another Housa-tonic Championship, and of course who could forget the baseball team becoming the Class L State Champs! T: Well, our Junior year came to an end and we were now ready for our last year in high school. 8: Well, at least some of us were. 77 Senior Year, Class Officers And Advisors A: We began our Senior year without an auditorium. The roof collapsed over the summer, and some other areas of the school were feared to be unsafe as well. T: The school now had an in-house scheduling system to more easily process schedules for students. 8: Yeah, but try to understand them and you go crazy! A: School now started fifteen minutes later and ended fifteen minutes later at 2:00. T: Some of us were glad to have the extra fifteen minutes in the morning. 8: But what about us kids with after-school jobs? What were we supposed to do? I changed my schedule around so 1 could get an early dismissal after 5th period! A: Many new sports were offered at the school this year, including volleyball and soccer in the fall, wrestling in the winter, and a revitalized track team in the spring. T: The Drama Club put on its pre- TOM DACOSTA (Treasurer), JEFF LUZZI (Vice-President), GINA GENTILE (Historian), AMY MODZELEWSKI (president), DIANNA STASIAK, (Secretary). sentation of A Christinas Carol. 8: Yeah, I wanted to play Scrooge. A: You would have been perfect for the part. The class held many fundraisers this year, including the sale of M M's, chocolate Santas, and pictures with the Easter bunny. T: The class also sponsored a very successful Halloween dance. 8: Yeah, 1 saw you there; you had a great costume on. A: Well, there was certainly enough to do that year. Many of us had college applications to fill out and scholarship forms to complete. T: The activities and “obligations alone of being a Senior kept most of us very busy. 8: I always used to hear that Senior year was so easy, but I had to go and pick classes that were hard. A: The year quickly went by as the Prom Committee planned the prom and the yearbook staff diligently worked on the yearbook, and before we knew it, June was here. T: The prom was held June 3rd at Bill Miller's, and during the next few weeks we had the luncheon and picnic. It was a very busy time. 8: It also put a nice big hole in my wallet. A: Finally, graduation was upon us. After being together for all those years, we now were about to go our separate ways. T: But we should remember never to forget the years spent at East Ha- ven High School. 8: Yes. It's been a long, long road. What a long, strange trip it's been. GOOD NIGHT, EAST HAVEN HIGH. Even though most of the players had never played soccer before this year, they had a very successful season. Both coaches were able to give the team much knowledge of the game, and at the same time they managed to make it enjoyable. Though most of the time they were up against tougher opponents, the team never gave up. Senior leadership will be missed, but there are many starters who will return to the line- up next year. Both coaches are excited about the upcoming season. Although the team only competed on a JV level this year, they will move up to the Varsity level next year. The season started with a big win against Cheshire 13-12. But as the season went on, the Easties kept coming up short despite their efforts. Entering the Thanksgiving Day game against Branford, the underdog Yellowjackets stung first and took the lead into halftime 6-0. In the second half the Hornets came back and took the lead 7-6 and the Easties could not recover. The team was lead by Tri-captains Jeff Luzzi, John Longley, and Sean McCormack. 134 JOHN LONGLEY Captain JEFF LUZZI Captain SEAN MCCORMACK Captain TOM DACOSTA JOE LUCIBELLO MICHAEL FENIOLO GARY PETERS GEORGE FUCCI ANDREW RAUCCI LANCE HORTON ART SCHOBERT 135 Girls Swimming East Haven Opponent 119-49 Cheshire 87-83 Hand 96-76 West Haven 95-76 Branford 85-71 Seymour 98-71 Amity 114-50 Lyman Hall 99-70 North Haven 106-63 Sheehan Although the girls' swim team lacked size, they managed to pull through with a 3-6 record. Tri-captains Julie Anastasio, Cindy Ca-cace, and Andrea Giaquinto led the team with individual performances. Underclassmen also performed well individually, but the small size of the team did hinder the team's scoring. Eight girls qualified for Class 'S' State Championships. Qualifying in the top six were Carol LaCroix, Cindy Cacace, Andrea Giaquinto and Julie Anastasio. They also set a new individual medley school record. Julie Anastasio and Andrea Giaquinto broke individual school records, and Andrea was named to the 2nd team All-Housatonic. We feel that we have reached that desired end. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to several people who have helped us in the task of developing our 1988 Pioneer. First, to Bob Sasena, our Jostens Printing and Publishing representative, we extend our deepest thanks for all his help, patience, and guidance throughout the difficult times encountered during the production of this book. To all the faculty, we are grateful for your patience and understanding throughout this busy year. A special thank you to the Senior English teachers, who were so cooperative when polls and ballots needed to be filled out by the class. To all of the coaches and club advisors, you have our deepest thanks for your cooperation and patience when photographs needed to be taken. Thank you to Mr. Narracci for his help with the team scores, Mrs. Sullivan and Miss Croll for allowing us the use of Media Center materials, and the guidance staff. A big thank you to Mrs. Teresa Vitale for all of her help, patience, and understanding throughout the year. Thanks also go to Mr. Fred Sargolini for his help. Also, thanks to those who helped us out with the sports write-ups: Joe Lucibello, John Reed, Sue Parlato, Andrea Giaquinto, Luanne Iadone, and Matt DeMaio. A very special thank you to Lisa Bly for her help with the artwork, as well as Adrienne Esposito for her typing assistance, and Gary Faulkner for his help with the team photographs. Also, thanks to Amy Modzelewski, Maria Fappiano, Krista Gropen, Jeanine Catalano, Jennifer Keyes, and Bill McCormick. Finally, many thanks to our dedicated advisor, Mr Neil Sullivan. His determination, guidance, and sense of humor kept us going even through the darkest days when our goal of completing the yearbook seemed like an impossible one. Thanks to everyone, Marc Guidone Editor-in-Chief X yC'P acJUy Kim Pacileo Assistant Editor C0M(f1 luiCOum J Carolyn Siccama Assistant Editor JOSTENS
