(Following pages) A former cargo schooner in its second century on the water, the 102-foot schooner Pioneer put in to port at Oyster Point Marina, City Point last October. One of the many tall ships that participated in Operation Sail in New York Harbor on July 4, 1986,the Pioneer is a year older than the Statue of Liberty. The ship was launched in 1885 from a shipyard in Marcus Hook, Pa. It began its career carrying sand for foundries and blast furnaces in the Delaware Bay region. In 1966 Russell Grinnell, a shipyard owner in Gloucester, Mass., raised funds to restore the Pioneer, then a rotting hulk on a Massachusetts beach. Grinnell died in 1970, shortly after he had completed restoration of the Pioneer. His family, eager to see the ship preserved, donated it to the South Street Seaport, where it is used in sail training programs and chartered cruises. 5 OO Pioneer Spirit 9 THI EAR SIDI By GARY LARSON aam plao«t, dlff « nt wo ld« Southern Connecticut sujotcha cum hob u«i«n THE SCARLET LETTER There Are Pioneer Souls That Blaze Their Paths Where Highways Never Ran. Conquering, Holding, Daring, Venturing As We Go The Unknown Ways, Pioneers! O Pioneers! Dedication 1987 Mr. Norman DeMartino It is difficult for any of us to imagine what an awesome responsibility Mr. Norman DeMartino assumed as principal of East Haven High. Throughout the course of this year he has proven himself to be a man of truly enviable qualities - sincerity receptiveness, and friendship. As a true Pioneer, Mr. DeMartino has explored all possible ways to be of service to the students here at East Haven High. The generous amount of time he has given to us through thought and action is greatly appreciated. Knowing that he will succeed in bringing our school to even greater heights, we, The Class Members of 1987, wish to dedicate this year’s Pioneer to Mr. Norman DeMartino. 16 I DOMINIC ACQUARULO Memories are treasures that time cannot destroy. Any advice for future officers? A. “Keep in touch with your class-members. Try to please the majority, and not everyone.” Q. What is one of your most memorable moments? A. “We’ve had so many memorable moments during these few years— that it would be hard to pick just one!” Q. Have you sacrificed anything? A. “Our class advisors were helpful with the planning and organization of fund raisers, so that I didn’t have to sacrifice a lot of time—but I helped when I was needed.” Q. Did you know what being an officer entailed? A. “When I first ran I really was unsure as to my duties, but after my first year, I liked it, and ran again. I’ve been secretary my junior and senior year. Q. Should students run for class officers? A. “I think it’s good for students to get involved with the school activities; but only students who are really willing to put a lot of time, and new ideas into things should run for an office.” VIRGINIA PETRAFESA, (Historian); PAUL SQUEGLIA, (President); CHRISTY CARMOSINO, (Secretary); CHRIS NUCOLO, (Treasurer); Missing: CONNIE LAFEMINA. After a four year absence, the boys fielded a team comprised of seniors Doug MacKenzie, Shawn Higgins, John Horn, Steve Uschak, and Scott Ebert. The underclassmen were juniors John Conlon and Phil Frione. In their first victory, over Stamford, Phil Frione was the first Eastie to finish. Scott Ebert set the school record of 18:02 for 3.1 miles in the quad meet against Wilbur Cross, Cheshire, and Sheehan at our home course, Lighthouse Park. Next year’s captain will be Phil Frione. The girls’ five year winning record was finally ended. Sandy Ruthowski, a four year veteran, led the team of juniors Jennifer Spadacenta, Sue Par-lato, and freshmen Karen Ursini and Jennifer Sici-gano. Sandy was a member of the All-Housy J.V. and All-New Haven County J.V. teams in her sophomore and junior years. She was injured, however, during most of her senior year. But Jennifer Spadacenta and Karen Ursini shone on the girls’ 2.5 mile course. Co-Captains for the ’87 season will be Jennifer Spadacenta and Sue Parlato. What kind of season did you have last year? “Last year was a re-building year. It was our first season after a three year absence.” What do you expect this year? “Many students signed up for try-outs. In Memoriam DEAN CAPOBIANCO HOLY SONNETT 10 Death be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so; Thou’rt slave to Fate, chance, kings, and desperate men, And dost with poison, war and sickness dwell; Why swell’st thou then? One short sleep past, we wake eternally, And Death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die! Freshman Year Our class of 1987 entered East Haven High School in September 1983, both with apprehension and anticipation. We adjusted to 15 minute breaks, freedom to go to our lockers anytime, and dismissal at an extremely early 1:15. We set to work on both electing class officers and raising money. Our elected officials were P.J. O’Malley, president; Michele DeNuzzo, vice-president; Tammy Mazzucco, secretary; Sandy Ruthowski, treasurer, and Elyse Klein, historian. Once used to high school life, many students chose to participate in social, athletic or academic activities. Those who were members of the Boys' Varsity Basketball or Girls’ Varsity Softball teams helped glorify East Haven Sports by both winning Housatonic League Championships! This year proved to be rather interesting, closing with our first taste of dreaded final exams. Sophomore Year Once again we returned to the high school, but this time it seemed different. We were sophomores, far wiser and more experienced; also, the school’s rules had changed. The lunch program, which received mixed reviews, had been reinstated, lengthening our day to 1:30! Honor courses for some sophomores were brought back to E.H.H.S. Our second election resulted with these new officers: Eileen Parlato, President; Kim Chieppo, Vice-president; Donna Peluso, Treasurer; Stefanie Mascola, Secretary; and Elyse Klein, Historian. We raised funds in a new way, this year in the form of carnations for Thanksgiving, and chocolate Santas for Christmas. Our Hockey team was this year’s highlight—winning the Housatonic Championships. As sophomore year ended, it proved to be just as exciting as freshman year, if not more, with half as much heartache, for now we were juniors. Junior Year This year started off great! Hurricane Gloria interrupted the first month of our junior year, granting us a week off. Unfortunately, this maelstrom extended our June calendar. Our ever-changing elected officials for this vital year turned out to be Dom Acquarulo, president; Lynn Jackson, vice-president; Christy Carmosino, secretary; Nicole Travaglino, treasurer; and Connie LaFemina, historian. We sold chocolate Santas again and added chocolate Easter bunnies to the list of fundraisers. The Junior Prom drew closer and closer, and finally it was here. Our prom chairpeople, Adrienne Dest and Stacey DeSena and their committee did a fine job planning the gala event. King and Queen were Mike Ursini and Nicole Travaglino. The Court included John Kikosicki, Pat Spadacenta, Nick Langello, Marilyn Muro, Theresa DeMilo, and Kim Chieppo. Many honors were bestowed upon the members of our Junior class; several students received the honor of Rotary Youth of the Month; six students were chosen to attend Boys’ State and two to attend Girls’ State; three members were chosen to participate in the Yale University E.H.H.S. program. The CT Scholars summer program at Choate Rosemary Hall was introduced and 22 students were inducted into the National Honor Society. Again many changes had been made—another period had been added to our school day, stretching our day out to 1:45; on a happier note, our defunct school news-paper, The Comet, was reintroduced and headed by a large staff consisting mainly of Journalism students. June came quickly and our senior year had now become a well-awaited reality. Senior Year Beginning on September 3,1986, our senior year held many changes again; our new principal, Mr. Norman DeMartino, helped to boost our school spirit to levels not witnessed for many years. Such spirit-lifting activites included in-school pep-rallies and dances. Everyone felt better about our school and once again were proud to be from East Haven High School. Our senior class officers—Paul Squelgia, president; Connie LaFemina, vice-president; Christy Carmosino, secretary; Chris Nucolo, treasurer; Ginny Petrafesa, historian—helped get this most important year started by sponsoring a Halloween Costume Dance, which was a huge success. Our enthusiastic class sold ads for our yearbook, selling the most ever! The night before our annual Thanksgiving Day football game against Branford, an Alumni night, inviting alumni from each graduating class from 1936 was held, in honor of E.H.H.S.’s 50th anniversary! This brought many added guests to our indoor pep-rally; however, our planned bon-fire was rained out. 7 At last June 1987 arrived—that vague, far-away time that was so uncertain four years ago, when we first entered East Haven High. The social affairs of our school years were topped with that exciting event—our senior prom! It was held at the Park Plaza on June 5, with Theresa DeMilo as chairperson. Theresa and her committee did their best to make this affair a most memorable one. In mid-June we had our senior luncheon, our final event as a whole class before graduation. We listened intently to the final addresses and reminiscently signed friends’ yearbooks. Finally graduation stood right in front of us, so close we could reach out and touch it. Heads held high, we each marched up to receive our long-awaited diplomas. Some of us will secure positions for ourselves, while others will go on to higher education. Yes, we have all worked hard to attain knowledge. However, we will always remember the fun we had and the lasting friendships we made along the way here at East Haven High School! Cindy Perillo We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all those who kindly gave their time and talents to assist us in our task of making our 1987 Pioneer possible. We would like to thank Lifetouch Studios, our official photographers; Bob Sasena, our Josten’s Representative, Seniors- A1 Camera, for his artwork; Josephine Giano, Debbie Grether, Donna Maciejak, Scott Seipold and Adrienne Dest; also Gary Faulkner for his photographs. A very special thank-you to Jeff Biedrzycki who, with a busy schedule, put in as much time as possible; and Peter Coulombe who did most of the artwork. And our deepest thanks and appreciation to our parents for their understanding and patience; and especially Mr. Neil Sullivan, our dedicated yearbook advisor, for his intelligence, creativity, and great sense of humor in helping us complete a yearbook to be proud of!
