Two successful money - makers were the selling of candy bars, and the sale and distribution of flowers to friends and sweethearts Due to the reinstatement of the lunch program in our junior year (198-1). candy bars could no longer be sold and bake sales could no longer be held, puttmg a strain on the class budget. 57 Our Junior year began with the reopening of the school cafeteria which had been closed for three previous years. At first students protested and threatened not to eat, but once they tasted the food, they welcomed the cafeteria enthu -siastically. The only side effect was the lengthening of the school day from 1:15P.M. to 1:30P.M. As juniors, we were excited about our upcoming Jr. Prom. We all made a special effort to raise money by selling Super Bowl XVIIII paraphanalia, flowers, and I Love the Class of ’86” buttons and bumper stickers. The night of the prom - held May 10, 1985 at Sdnte's Manor in Milford - was truly The Only One. All who at-tended went home with memories that would last forever. Groups of Juniors, held their picnics at different parks throughout the state. To top the year off twenty-six members of the Junior class were inducted into the Athena Chapter of the National Honor Society. k On July 13, 1983 eighty-one music artists joined talents to perform Live Aid, a concert to aid famine relief. Organized by Bob Geldolf, Live Aid took place in Wembley and JFK Stadiums. Over 75 million people were there to view the concert; in addition people all around the world watched it on television. The concert raised over $70 million, pledged to the Bund Aid s Ethiopian Fund. A lot of grumpy seniors, as well as underclassmen, entered school on September 4, 1985. Another period had been added to the school day; instead of the day ending at 1:30 P.M. with period 6, it was stretched to 1:45 P.M. with period 7. But the extra time is well worth the new courses added to the curriculum to provide more opportunities for students. To name a few: the new computer center where the Media Center used to be in the basement (the Media Center was moved to the second floor last year); Keyboards, a new music course; and special college courses, that advanced students may take. New activities were also opened to students. Our school newspaper The Comet, which had been defunct for a number of years, was reorganized with a large staff made of mostly Journalism (also a new course) students. East Haven was hit full force by Hurricane Gloria on September 26, 1985. Extensive damage was done: torrential rains, 100 mph winds, and pounding surfs knocked down trees, telephone and electrical lines, and caused some residents to evacuate their homes. Left in darkness. East Haven was in a state of chaos. Schools were forced to close for one week due to electrical difficulties. The week of our annual Thanksgiving football game against Branford, the Student Council sponsored School Spirit Week. Students were asked to dress in our school colors on the first day, sweats the second, and hats, ties and glasses the third. Although our school is notorious for student non-participation, School Spirit Week was a big success (We still lost the game!!). January 28, 1986 America and the rest of the world witnessed the death of seven astronauts blown up in the space shuttle Challenger. For one day the country mourned; flags were ordered to be flown at half-mast and here in East Haven we observed a moment of silence. Halley’s Comet captured the attention of the world as it made its trip past Earth. Some Fast Haven residents had a chance to view the comet from a telescope set up at Light House Park. There will not be another chance to see the comet for another seventy-five years. ROBERT W CARBONE Director of Curriculum 62 VINCENT PRATO Business Manager Board of Education (Seated) ED LYON SR.. Humean Gloria destroyed the newly-established course at Lighthouse Park, which was to host the Housatonic Meet. Also, while Coach Badamo, now Harkins, was planning her wedding, Ms. Liz Franco took over the coaching reins. The season ended successfully, as all members participated in the Housy Meet at Cheshire. Senior Captain Julie Torre qualified for rhe All-Housy second team. She also established the school course record, while placing first against Shelton and Branford. Several members participated, including Julie Schwab, a senior captain and two-year veteran. Other participants were senior veteran Leah AI-tieri, junior Sandy Ruthowski and two promising sophomores— Jennifer Spadacenta and Sue Parlato. The boys' team consisted of senior captain Ed Rustic and juniors Shawn Higgins. John Mar-kowski and Scott Ebert. Senior Vicki Parillo managed the team. The price of victory! The Fasties were led by captains Jody Longley, Donald Hemstock and Michael Corolla. The Fasties managed some big victories this year even though they were without the services of senior captain Gary Foster, who suffered a broken leg during baseball season. Domini? Acquarulo filled the vacant quarterback spot, doing a fine job. The Fasties had many fine moments this past year but the biggest thrill of the season Caine when the Fasties defeated the Shelton Gaels. The game was considered one of the best the Fasties have ever played. Along with the captains, other seniors who enjoyed fine seasons were Shawn Caldwell, Ray Curren, Marty DeFelice, Frank Liquori. Post Season honors this past year went to Jody Longley and Donald Hemstock, who were selected to the All-Housatonic and All-State teams. Pat Spadacenta was selected to the All-Housatonic league team and John Kikosicki, Andy Paolillo and Frank Liquori were selected on the second team All-Housatonic league team. The Easties' season was highlighted by the two defeats of perennial power Fairfield Prep, the first time in school history the Easties have done that. Anthony Dilungo enjoyed another fantastic season, while leading the Housatonic League in scoring. He also broke the school scoring record of 185 points set by Eddy LeMaire last season. Nick Cirillo and Guy Guglielmi played a major part in the team's success by providing a stable backbone for an explosive defensive team. T.J. Schatz provided the extra scoring punch for the Easties this season. Other seniors playing a significant role in the success of the team this season were Chris Teto, Chris Annunziata, and Joe Podsiadlo. Post season honors went to Nick Cirillo and Anthony Dilungo who were selected to the first team All-Housatonic. TJ. We believe we have achieved our goal in this yearbook. The creation of this book was made possible with the hard work of many people whom we would like to thank. It took the patience, advising and understanding of these people to accomplish the completion of our yearbook. Bruce Depuis (Jostens Printing and Publishing Representative) for his guidance and sense of humor that kept us going when times were rough. Mr. Neil Sullivan for his many ideas, his time and most of all, his devotion. Our staff- we certainly couldn't have done it without the aid of our co-workers: Eileen Casey, Beverly Tart, Michael Quido, Terri Smith, Susan Hann, Heidi Donahue, Kara Hargraves, and of course our talented artists, Paul Komaranko, Robert Narracci, and our calligrapher, Michael Cretella. We would also like to thank our teachers and parents for their patience and understanding. Our deepest thanks go to all of these people; their hard work and diligence has produced something which we can all be proud of. (Editors-in-Chief) Denise Sevino Cheryl MacKenzie 160
